Golden Hour at Flóki Studios - I have talked about this before, but every day I have spent in the north of Iceland at the studio over the past 5 years, is a day I notice the light.

At some point everyday the light catches my attention and causes me to pause. Sometimes it is a fleeting moment and other times the light will feel like it is stuck in its magical position for hours and hours. Either way it is always a reminder to stop, listen, and pay attention to nature. taken in Troll Peninsula, northern iceland by @flokistudios

We are nature, and we are born speaking nature’s universal language: music. Whether it’s wind through the trees or a wind instrument, rain drumming on the roof or a drum circle, the sound of the ocean in a seashell or our favorite track in our earbuds. by @flokistudios

QUOIA™ invites artists to come to the wildest places on earth, listen to the land and those living closest to it, and channel new sounds shaped by those places. The sounds we create together raise awareness for conservation of wild places.

Founded by an alliance of conservation-minded private enterprises, QUOIA is a living creative ecosystem. It grows through collaboration, adapts through creativity and exists to restore harmony with the natural world.

For QUOIA’s first session, eight artists experienced Iceland and recorded an album to be released digitally Oct. 23. They called themselves Rainbow Body.

QUOIA Session 01: Iceland supports the protection of wild Atlantic salmon, the places they call home and the people that are working to protect them.

Rainbow Body is: Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Taylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Eric Krasno (Lettuce, Soulive), Ross James (Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band), Adam MacDougall (Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Circles Around the Sun). Special guest appearances by Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Company, Allman Brothers Band) and Nicki Bluhm. by @flokistudios

Recording at the edge of the world.

On a night like tonight, there is no one around for miles, except maybe a couple of sleeping neighbors down the road, completely unaware of the magic and energy swirling around inside this 100-year-old building, glowing with soft amber light at the edge of the water.

There is something very special about being this far from everything and everyone and recording music. It is subtle, but you can feel a noticeable change in your headspace, your movements, your senses. It is hard to put into words, but it is real.

The best way I can describe it is that the veil between us and whatever lies beyond feels a little thinner. The connection to nature, even surrounded by all this technology, feels more present. Energy and action flow, but with purpose and reverence.

The song has room to enter.

And as it begins to take shape, a collaboration starts to unfold between the space, the people, and the art.. taken in Troll Peninsula, northern iceland by @flokistudios

I’ve heard so many great songwriters refer to songwriting not as something that comes from them, but rather something that is pulled from a universal place, somewhere beyond this one.

A song, an idea, a melody comes in, and through some kind of alchemy becomes a finished piece of music that can change the world.

Part of receiving that inspiration is putting yourself in a place where the barriers between the songwriter and the magic are stripped away, leaving a clean path for our antennas to catch the melody.

The ethos of Flóki embodies this idea. I believe that immersing yourself in a new, unencumbered place of wondrous natural beauty is a way of tuning into that frequency and finding your melody.

I have seen and been a part of this alchemy in action, and it is truly awe-inspiring and endlessly fascinating every time.

A beautiful, quiet room. The waves crashing outside. And sometimes even walking out into the cold waters of the North Atlantic.

Whatever it takes to get there. taken in Troll Peninsula, northern iceland by @flokistudios

Art is our passion. Conservation is our purpose. Here, in the ghost light of the Arctic, we find ourselves at the cross roads. After a magical week at @flokistudios we learned a lot from the local community and we stand with the people of Iceland to protect Iceland’s biodiversity and coastal ecosystems for future generations.

Swipe through to watch the short film.

Iceland’s aquaculture draft bill still allows the expansion of sea‑cage salmon farming. Sign the petition at LetsUndoThis.com to stand with the 63% of Icelanders who oppose sea cages and urge Parliament to strengthen the bill by adding three guardrails:
✔️ Phase out sea cages
✔️ Stop new sea‑cage licenses
✔️ Transition to closed or land‑based systems

Every signature and share helps secure a stronger future for Iceland and wild Atlantic salmon.

Today I am grateful. 🙏

For this planet 🌍. For the northern lights over Flóki Studios. For the way the sky suddenly decides to move and dance and turn the valley green. 💚

Every time the sky opens up like this, it strips away the noise and reminds us who we are. That moment of remembering inspires, connects us to the source, and allows creative energy to thrive. 💫

Grateful for the musicians, writers, engineers, and friends I have been lucky enough to know, work with and learn from. They keep showing me new ways to listen.❤️

“We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we have lost our connection to ourselves.”

Flóki Studios sits directly between two bodies of water, with Hópsvatn on one side and the North Atlantic on the other.

Depending on the day and the time of year, those waters can be tranquil and serene, quietly enveloping a session. Other days they can be violent and relentless, with waves crashing just outside the walls. And while you can’t actually hear them inside the studio, for anyone curious 😉, you can absolutely feel them.

Over the last five years, I’ve experienced so many versions of that energy, and it has reinforced something I’ve come to believe deeply: the place where music is made contributes to the music itself.

There is a particular energy that comes from making a record in a city, with all of the movement, chaos and humanity just outside the walls. I love that too. But Flóki offers something different.

Here, on this narrow strip of land between Hópsvatn and the North Atlantic, you feel connected to something older and more elemental. The weather shifts. The light changes. The water moves from glass to chaos. The landscape is never really still.

That energy finds its way into the room. Into the people. Into the decisions being made.

And, eventually, onto tape.

For me, that is one of the most special things about making music at Flóki. taken in Troll Peninsula, northern iceland by @flokistudios

Under the Northern Lights at Flóki Studios

From mid-September through March, darkness returns to Northern Iceland, and with it comes the chance each night to witness the magic of the Aurora Borealis.

In my experience here there is something truly wild about being deep in the process of making a record, trying to pull the song, the music, the energy from some unknown source, and suddenly someone says:

“Hey everyone… come outside. It’s happening.”

You step out and the wonder of nature is literally dancing above you, while inside you’ve been trying to weave together your own interpretation of that same energy through sound...

Then everyone comes back into the studio, somehow a little more connected, and tries to capture a version of that experience in song.

Magic witnessed. Magic realized. Magic captured. #grateful taken in Troll Peninsula, northern iceland by @flokistudios
