You know when you find something you think is so beautiful you almost go into shock. Then when you resurface, you shout out for others to come see and witness this beauty with you. Look at how beautiful this Hazel's husks are!

The fam and I were out harvesting some raspberries after dinner, when we snuck over to the Hazelnuts before the final sun faded. And one shrub has these beautiful husks holding a dark shelled Hazelnut.

What would you name this seedling?

This is one of the many benefits of growing Hazelnuts from seed--you may grow totally unique, stunning plants, that shock with their beauty.

Fall is a wonderful time to plant bareroot plants, which we will have available in late Oct.

Tell me it's Fall time without telling me it's Fall.

We are harvesting hazelnuts, dehydrating plums, covering squash and melons with fabric to protect from frost, slicing and dicing apples, fundraising for anti-imperialism resistance in end-time capitalism, and the fairies (our children) are building homes all around us.

This Hazelnut tree is 7 years old. We picked that bucket full off that tree and there's still some for the Bluejays and other critters. Then we have dozens of other bushes. Hazelnut butter and winter snacking and crunchy salads here we come!

A friend on the South South / South Kespukwitk shared that she had her first Hazelnut harvest, which filled me with so much excitement and pride that I was beaming! I am so happy that we get to be part of people growing THEIR OWN NUTS!! Dream coming true :) Imagine this place in 5 to 10 years, especially with all the other cool nurseries and all the cool people planting fruit and nut trees. It grows hope in me <3

Fall planting of bare roots is coming up. Sign up for our newsletter to learn about a cool new addition we are offering this year ;) Subscribe on our website (link in bio).

Late summer vibes in our personal garden.
The garden is abundant this time of year and the weather has been near perfect. We are feeling the insurmountable amount of possible work tasks and noticing some things getting left behind (have you noticed the lack of scythe posts....?).

This Fall-ish weather has been a great refresh for us and Floreren Farm is getting ready to restock our online store--both herbs and nursery nut trees.

If you haven't already, head to our website and subscribe to be the first to hear about when herb orders and nursery pre-orders open up.

Calling our fellow farmers, land workers and community! Farmers and growers across the globe continue to struggle to feed their communities in the face of genocide, imperialism and colonial violence. Let's join together in solidarity and fundraise to support them.

Mutual aid is critical to support food sovereignty and feed communities and if we join together we can raise enough funds to send support to several food sovereignty initiatives in Gaza, Sudan, Cuba, Niger and Congo.

The goal: 100 landworkers raise $500-$1000 each between September and November which will mean a minimum of $50 000 to distribute among the food growing initiatives highlighted here. Sell some preserves, host a farm party or meal, choose a crop to sell towards our goal - how you raise the funds is up to you!

Link to sign up your fundraiser is in our bio as well as the fundraising link to send your funds once you've raised them.

Celebrating turning 37 here on Floreren Farm in Centrelea.

I'm standing in the nut tree nursery, which is hard to see because I'm prioritizing this huge sunflower in the shot (thanks to Roosje for the picture). This is our 6th season growing on this land with the amazing community that surrounds us and all of our partners (customers) in healing!

Grateful for all of you helping us to grow the plants that are helping to restore and protect people and the world <3 taken in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia by @florerenfarm

Our first big ol' jar of fermented dill pickles has begun its transformation.

We just finished last year's pickles and the intention/wish/prayer/hope we put into so many of last year's ferments was "rain". Last year was a terrible drought with destructive wildfires. We needed rain badly. This year has had rain levels that are close to ideal for us... Maybe the ferment wish has a year lag.

When I was taught about fermenting, I was encouraged to always hold an intention while making it, and to infuse that intention into the ferment so that it may blossom into reality. Powerful stuff, maybe 🤔

So, let this first batch of pickles be labelled and deeply infused with the intention/hope/prayer for PEACE. Let us all continue, or start, to act for peace in all the ways we can. And maybe by August next year it will happen (or sooner!).

Are you fermenting anything? Any neat protocols you have as part of the process? taken in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia by @florerenfarm

Weeding and harvesting, weeding and harvesting :)
We are in the rhythm now!

We have been getting regular, solid rains this season, and, with the sandy soils we are working with, the plants are loving it!

Here is Ilana using a wheel hoe with a T-blade attachment (upside down T-shaped blade), which slides under drip tape, landscape fabric edges, and plant leaves. We got this attachment by accident with the wheel hoe 6 years ago and it's become my favourite weeding tool. It skims just underneath the soil surface like a shark when weeding millions of small weeds and I often (ab)use it as a cultivation tool on overgrown beds and paths. We first used a wheel hoe with an 8 or 10 inch stirrup attachment, which I liked, but I would never go back after this one.

Ilana (with some of our assisting hands) has been harvesting and drying Roses, Calendula, Tulsi, Raspberry leaf, Mugwort, Sage, Hyssop, and many others. Our website isn't updated yet, but we see you hitting those "notify me when back in stock buttons". You'll be the first to know AND you can message us to discuss pre-orders.

Weeding and harvesting :)

Every once and a while we pull ourselves out from the plants, where there is so much work to do and beauty to stick our faces in, and we marvel at the North Mountain's heavy grace.

The oats are almost milky.
