We grow medicinal herbs and nursery nut trees and fruit trees in the sweet earth Centrelea, Nova Scotia, unceded Mi'kma'ki

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Have you come across this term yet--Agroecology Brigade?

Maybe you've heard a neighbour talking about it or read it in a newsletter.

A growing number of farmers, farm workers, and eaters across Nova Scotia / Mi'kma'ki are taking part in Agroecology Brigades. With the good work of 4 National Farmers Union Brigade Coordinators, Brigades are taking place on farms across these lands--from the south Shore /Kespukwitk to the Eastern Annapolis Valley /Sipekne'katik, and from Antigonish /Nalikitquniejk to Cape Breton /Unama'kik.

When we come together in Agroecology Brigades, we do these 4 main things:
1) We get work done on the host farm, completing big or small tasks that they decide they need support with.

2) We have fun, catch up, share skills between the generations and cultures, challenge each other, and support each other.

3) We organize farms into networks of mutual aid, and,

4) We transform the food system towards food sovereignty.

Want to take part as a host farm and or participate in a Brigade? Message us and we will get you connected to a Local Agroecology Brigade group.

Join us!

Ps. Inspired by and learning with @organizacion_boricua

Calling our fellow farmers, land workers and community! Farmers and growers across the globe continue to struggle to feed their communities in the face of genocide, imperialism and colonial violence. Let's join together in solidarity and fundraise to support them.

Mutual aid is critical to support food sovereignty and feed communities and if we join together we can raise enough funds to send support to several food sovereignty initiatives in Gaza, Sudan, Cuba, Niger and Congo.

The goal: 100 landworkers raise $500-$1000 each between September and November which will mean a minimum of $50 000 to distribute among the food growing initiatives highlighted here. Sell some preserves, host a farm party or meal, choose a crop to sell towards our goal - how you raise the funds is up to you!

Link to sign up your fundraiser is in our bio as well as the fundraising link to send your funds once you've raised them.

Get in touch to learn more, I hope you'll join us!

though not nearly as popular as some of the more well known nervous system supportive plants---milky oats (avena sativa) is an ally well worth having in your arsenal.

sometimes reading plant indications (descriptions of feelings/situations of plants best used when) really hits home. when i first read (i don't remember whose words) 'for those burning the candle at both ends' i stopped dead in my tracks and really sat with that for a minute. yup---that's me, i thought to myself, and thus began my relationships with this deeply supportive plant.

milky oats are simply what they sound like--oats. but the milky bit means catching them at the point in their ripening process where when you squeeze the oat seeds, they emit a milky substance. it's slightly sweet, and contains alkaloids that support & relax the nerves & adrenals.

milky oats are something to consider in times of overstimulation, adrenal fatigue, nerve tremors, anxiety & when you are feeling depleted from ongoing stress.

it is something that takes time to nourish the a nervous system, so think of regular & steady dosing, not overnight miracles, but this is a plant ally to keep in mind if you are finding yourself realizing how wildly burned out you actually are, and something to work with to settle that anxious buzz of anxiety that sometimes sets in to haunt us. milky oats are sometimes used (along with other supports & herbs) in helping folks with withdrawal from alcohol, drugs & caffeine.

we forgot to grow oats this year but we're lucky enough to get some from @florerenfarm just down the way from us.

we will have milky oats tincture to share sometime in september. if you'd like us to put a bottle aside for you, send a message along 🌾

🎤 Workshop Hosts: Wendie Wilson & Paul Wartman

Workshop: Building Regional Food Sovereignty

When: Saturday afternoon, August 8th
Where: Tatamagouche Regional Academy cafeteria

Exploring what it means for communities to have meaningful control over the food systems that sustain them. Grounded in Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Black Food Sovereignty, and farmer-led food sovereignty movements, this interactive session will move beyond theory to explore how food sovereignty is built and sustained in practice. Together, participants will examine the relationships, infrastructure, policies, knowledge systems, and community capacity needed to strengthen local and regional food systems while identifying concrete opportunities for collaboration and action.

Wendie Wilson is a mother, educator, artist, published author, and cultural advocate dedicated to advancing Black food sovereignty. A descendant of African Nova Scotians with more than 400 years of history in Mi’kma’ki, Wendie is deeply committed to sharing the knowledge, experiences, and contributions of her community. She advises municipal, provincial, and national initiatives focused on food justice, helping shape conversations about sustainable, equitable, and
community-led food systems.

Paul Wartman (he/him) is a settler with transplanted European roots who farms at Floreren Farm in Centrelea Nova Scotia / Likalie’katik Mi’kma’ki with his spouse and family. Together they grow medicinal herbs, nursery nut trees, and fruit shrubs for people who want more food and herbs for their communities. Paul is also a farm member of and the part time organizer with the National Farmers Union in NS, which is an organization made up of farmers, farm workers, and associate members (eaters) that advocates and works for food sovereignty in NS.

It's been 2 months since our International Brigade (these photos are from when we were planting a food forest with @farm.to.feast ) and NFU NS members have been so inspired that they have already carried out 3 local Brigades!

This speaks to the effectiveness (and fun) of getting together and working side by side.

If you are interested in getting involved in the NFU Brigade Committee and planning the next round of NS brigades and working alongside fellow farmers+workers, join our next meeting on Thursday July 30th at 7pm. All welcome!

DM or email novascotia@nfu.ca for the Zoom link.

This is why we need the @nfucanada and how we speak up for farmers and workers!

With appreciation to the CFA for convening us.

"National Farmers Union NS’s farm members Jessie MacInnis and Paul Wartman joined allied organizations including the Young Agrarians, Ecological Farmers Association of ON, Farmers for Climate Solutions, Canadian Organic Growers, and many others, to speak on behalf of our members at the CFA-hosted Policy Summit: Policy Priorities for the Next Ag Policy Framework.

In collaboration with our allied organizations, the NFU made sure our members’ perspectives on new entrants, corporate concentration, workers rights, climate justice, and food sovereignty were heard."

The brigade model has been a big inspiration for us and we are looking forward to working with everyone to continue to practice it in NS / Mi'kma'ki. Want in?

🌱 On the lands where the Mi’kmaq people have been nurturing foodways for millennia, young farmers and farmworkers from the NFU (@ns.nfu ) in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, or Mi’kma’ki, are joining the effort for food sovereignty.

🌱 In this interview, by Martha Caswell for Rooted's fourth issue "Youth Leading the Way in Agroecology", NFU-NS members Jessie MacInnis and Paul Wartman share how their movement is building networks for land-based learning and increasingly serving as a strong voice for agroecology.

International Brigade Highlights - Day 1

We gathered at the beautiful @springtide.farm with members from @hopebloomshfx @nfuontario @nfu.unf.nb @organizacion_boricua and @ns.nfu to work together on fencing, seedling transplanting, and many other tasks. While working and comfy in the living room we exchanged knowledge on how to grow food and how to grow our social movement.

Watch above for some of the key lessons and join us as a farm member, farm worker member, or associate (eater) member to put these lessons into action. Learn more about membership via the link in our bio.
