SCULPTURES OF NATURE AND ORDER

JOE SEGAL

A longtime Florida Mining artist, Segal explores the meeting point between nature’s patterns and our impulse to create order. Natural material. Deliberate form.

Segal’s sculptures bring wood’s grain, texture, and history into conversation with precise geometry. Carved surfaces and considered interventions create work that is quiet in its presence—and compelling up close

“Be prepared to play a long game.” — Craig Drennen

From Awful & Others at Florida Mining to Pale Fire in Paris, at @brigittemulholland Craig Drennen keeps following his own path.

In our latest Substack interview, the Florida Mining alum talks about intuition, sketchbooks, grunge, working in New York, and eighteen years of making art through the characters of Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens.

We also talk about THE END Project Space in Atlanta—and why giving artists room to do what no one else will let them do matters.

Swipe for a look at the work, then read An Atypical Art Path on Florida Mining’s Substack. Link in bio.

From Philadelphia to Jacksonville. Saunders’s intimate paintings turn airplanes into vessels for body and soul, and landscapes into spaces of memory. Brushing, scraping, wiping and scratching give each small work a densely worked surface that rewards looking closely.

What do we inherit—and what do we choose to rewrite?

Georgia artist Isaac Mehki uses painting, performance, mythology, and pseudo-biographical storytelling to confront the complicated histories of the American South.

Currently pursuing his MFA at Carnegie Mellon, Mehki builds worlds where history, fantasy, politics, and personal inheritance collide.

Florida Mining looks forward to bringing his work to Jacksonville next year.

Read our conversation with Isaac at the link in bio—and follow along as we introduce the artists shaping what comes next.

What inherited story would you rewrite?

Borderland Transitions

Hard-edged abstraction in Eric Manuel Santoscopy-Mckillip’s conceptual work

Eric Manuel Santoscoy-Mckillip is originally from El Paso, Texas and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY where he earned an MFA at NYU. Santoscoy-Mckillip’s work has been featured in solo shows at New York galleries including Kates-Ferri Projects and 80 WSE Gallery. His solo show composites: my eyes tear in the sun runs through Feb. 21st, 2027 at the El Paso Museum of Art.

Santoscoy-Mckillip’s work moves between painting and sculpture, as an examination of place and identity through color, symbols, space, and textures, “reclaiming what has already been reclaimed.” The transitions between these elements reflect the physical and mental in-between space of the US-Mexico borderland, the continually changing complex identities and histories of the artist and the geographic region. He builds a lexicon by reassessing pieced-together narratives, connecting to people and places no longer within reach. Link in Bio to full Substack article

We saw Isaac Mehki at the 2025 Atlanta Art Fair and couldn’t quite shake the work.

Raised in Villa Rica, Georgia, Mehki uses pseudo-biographical storytelling and intuitive world building to pull apart history, mythology, politics, performance and the inherited language of the American South.
These images are from Two Great Cowards & A Full Ten Rounds.

Credit: Craig Drennen and THE END Project Space introduced us to Isaac’s work. Thank you, Craig, for putting him on our radar.

We’re watching what Isaac does next. Exhibition at FM at some point in 2027, keep your eyes on our program schedule being published soon.

“NOBODY IN MY FAMILY ever told the truth unless it was funny. Then we made it a story. What was real and actual we spat into a handkerchief, tied it at the corners and swallowed. Forced the bundle down in a dry choke, it lay tucked in the corners of our bowels.
Dark in our guts, reality festered and boiled, never able to gnaw through its swaddle.

Meanwhile we laughed. It was the only emotion allowed. Made each other giggle at the dinner table.
That was our pharmacy. Each dose measured, calibrated, pointed and distinct. Stories were distilled from facts, brewed and filtered to a tincture of truth.
Medicine.”

Carol John is a painter and designer living in Athens, Georgia. She received a BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work is in the collection of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and numerous private collections.

Florida Mining exhibited her work at the Atlanta Art Fair in 2025, and for 2026 she has a new show Sunshine, Happiness & Joy at The Do Good Fund Gallery in Columbus, Georgia.

Pot Liquor is the southern name for the flavorful, nutritious broth left after slow cooking. After a long career of artmaking, Carol John has accumulated a body of work steeped in an ever-evolving recipe of formal, conceptual, and emotional inspirations. The following are excerpts from Dennis Harper’s essay on her work, “Carol John: A Burst of Wow” in the book Pot Liquor. A distinguished curator, museum leader, and studio artist, Harper’s career spans more than three decades of institutional and scholarly engagement. He has held key leadership roles at the Georgia Museum of Art and Auburn University’s Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, where he shaped exhibitions, collections, and programs that strengthened each museum’s national profile while remaining deeply attentive to regional artistic traditions

SHADOW MACHINES : JASON BROWN

*The Revolution Will Be Sandwiched Between Reels*

Jason Brown is an American Artist who uses industrial painting and signage tropes to unmask the empty spaces beneath carefully choreographed social roleplays. Lifting content from stock images and internet catalog models that show up in our daily algorithms, Brown uses the concept of the shroud or the vessel as a kind of mask, worn to protect and also imprison the wearer. His subjects cut a swath through the entirety of contemporary culture, instantly recognizable and yet somehow anonymous and ambiguous. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Jason currently lives and works in Brooklyn NYC, and will open a show of new work along with Eric Manuel Santoscoy-Mckillip at Florida Mining this November 14th
