jaฬcome presents ๐™€๐™–๐™ง๐™ฉ๐™๐™จ๐™š๐™š๐™™ (2022โ€“present), a site-specific storytelling installation that houses and encodes oral history interviews onto seed sculptures. Zellaโ€™s intermedia installation and library is situated within Experimental School for Black Imagination, a collective they helped initiate. Thank you to everyone who came and participated in โ€œUrban Water Awareness Day: Hidden Systems, Shared Futuresโ€ a little over a week ago!

"Urban Water Awareness Day" consisted of an urban waterfront walk, panel discussion, workshop, and film screening presented in conjunction with New York Climate Week. The program brought together artists, architects, urbanists, environmental advocates, and community organizations, to examine water as a civic, social, and cultural framework, not merely a technical system. This program revealed how water continues to shape everyday life and how some of the city's most pressing environmental, social, and political challenges converge in the municipal waters of a warming New York City.

The program was presented in Partnership with ECO Solidarity (Polish Cultural Institute New York (@polishculturalinstituteny)), and Shared Grounds (Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (@thefciny) and Flux Factory (@flux_factory))

The Tbilisi Architecture Biennial's theme this year is The Geography of Emptiness -- so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to present a small custom version of The Disappointed Tourist -- my on-going project for which I have been painting places submitted by the public in response to the question "Is there some place you would like to visit that no longer exists?" I couldn't transport all 300+ existing paintings to Tbilisi, so we made a wallpaper of a selection and hung the new Georgian paintings (along with the stories submitted, that normally just exist on the website) over the wallpaper. Thanks to Flux Factory and the Trust for Mutual Understanding for their support! @tbilisiarchitecturebiennial @flux_factory by @flux_factory

Artist Talk + Textile Lab with Sunaina Bhalla
Sept 27, 2:00 - 5:00 pmย (Free to RSVP)
๐Ÿ“ Flux IV, 56-21 2nd Street

Last chance to RSVP! As the fall festival season approaches in Queens, artist Sunaina Bhalla invites participants to gather around the saree as a site of memory, politics, and inheritance. The event makes space to consider how textiles carry memory across generations of diasporic communities. What happens when we come together to reflect on the political and familial legacy behind such adornments?

In ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™Ž๐™–๐™ง๐™š๐™š ๐™‹๐™ง๐™ค๐™Ÿ๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ, Bhalla examines the saree not only as an emblem of beauty and tradition, but as a cultural text shaped by histories of gender, power, restriction, and control. Drawing from a personal archive of sarees inherited from her mother and mother-in-law, Bhalla considers how sartorial codes, ideas of modesty and ownership, colonial encounters, and changing forms of surface design and tailoring have shaped the garment and bodies that wear it.

This Artist Talk + Textile Lab combines a brief presentation with collective textile sharing and hands-on making. Participants will work with the saree, adding their mark to an evolving component of The Saree Project; and experiment with block printing, with fabrics provided by Bhalla. Participants are also invited to bring an ancestral textile, memory, or story associated with the politics of garments.
