Our monthly Fly Fishing & Tying Community Night is almost here! Next Tuesday, July 21st at 6:00 please join us at our favorite @fallingskybrew for a night of community, connection, laughs, great food & drinks, and more! Again, this month a friend of the shop and regular at our Community Night Alan @eubanksalan @the_tailout is going to be teaching complimentary fly tying lessons sponsored by the shop @caddisflyshop. Alan will instruct beginners on how to tie a Parachute Adam’s. Spots are limited so message us to secure a spot, swing by the shop, or give us a ring (541) 342-7005. This is a great opportunity, if you haven’t been, to connect with the local fly fishing community. We’ve had a ton of new faces and new anglers dropping by so don’t be bashful, you won’t be the only new one! You don’t have to be a fly flier either to pop in. Plenty of folks just come in to grab a drink, food, or just visit! Fly tiers are encouraged to bring their vises and materials and get busy. We will be doing fly swap this month as well with prizes from @fulling_mill and @troutunlimited. Swing by for some great food and beer from our friends at @fallingskybrew. We are so grateful that Stephen has hosted us monthly for well over a year. Community Nights for 2026 will generally fall on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. One of our all time favorite PMD patterns is the Tactical Light Cahill Parachute from our friends over at @fulling_mill. One mistake many commercial flies have is that they aren’t tied sparsely enough. This can be a huge problem when trying to convince the large fish intermittently feeding that your PMD is the one. The Tactical Light Cahill is tied sparsely so it more closely matches proportions of the natural duns on the water. Being tied sparsely also means it floats well and sheds water quickly. It is a staple in our summer box, and should be in yours too. Crickets are an often overlooked insect under the more broad “terrestrial” umbrella of insects. In this video, Simon @fly_goddd ties an improved version of his late summer staple terrestrial, the “driftless cricket”. When people think of terrestrial season, hoppers are typically the first insect that comes to mind. Grasshoppers are typically followed by beetles and ants in terms of popular flies thrown. Crickets are also a huge portion of a summer trout’s diet. This is especially true on smaller streams, spring creeks, and rivers with a lot of stream side brush. Because crickets are often overlooked, and very few commercial cricket patterns exist compared to other terrestrials, this makes them a fantastic option for pressured fish. This fly utilizes a new resin from @solarezusa called “Top Coat Gloss”, which is specifically formulated to coat foam flies. This not only aids in durability, but helps with buoyancy. Believe it or not, foam can wet out. This resin really makes a huge difference on this improved version of an already productive fly. Tie some up so you’re ready in the next few weeks when hatches slow and we really shift into terrestrial and attractor season. Golden Stoneflies are hands down the most important summer stonefly in the Western United States. They hatch most of the summer with great consistency and have a wide distribution across the Western US. It is no surprise that foam bodied Chubby Chernobyl style flies have dominated summer fly bins across the West with these big bugs around. On highly pressured waters or during the late summer fish begin to turn their nose up at your standard run of the mill Chubby. Simon @fly_goddd has had this pattern up his sleeve in various iterations for the last 4+ years. It excels in places where trout are pressured, or where finicky trout demand a more realistic initiation. The beautify of this pattern is it maintains its buoyancy while still offering up an impressively realistic silhouette. The mighty Green Drake is one of the most famous mayfly hatches in the United States, but did you know there are actually 2 very distinct groups of “Green Drakes”? Although they sound similar, the Eastern and Western Green Drake are from entirely different families in the insect order of Ephemeroptera which envelops all mayflies. Both adult forms looks relatively similar, a large greenish mayfly, with a bulky body. The real significant difference is in their nymph form. This fantastic pattern tied and created by @fly_goddd captures the unique silhouette of our Western Green Drake. This makes a fantastic fly to run below a large, buoyant gold stone this time of year out west.
