Some wines are made for special occasions, and sharing the 2013 Solaia with @flyingsomm for his birthday was certainly one of them.
Antinori’s Solaia is one of Tuscany’s iconic Super Tuscans and a signature flagship of the estate, born from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese from its namesake vineyard at Tenuta Tignanello. At 13 years old, the 2013 is now entering a compelling stage of maturity, with ripe red and black fruit giving way to balsamic notes, liquorice, mint, spice, smoked game, underbrush, and chocolate, while its once-firm tannins has softened into a more polished, integrated texture.
A memorable bottle for a memorable birthday - and even better shared with a good friend.

Wines of South Africa Tasting 🇿🇦

Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and more available now @lcbo @wosa_ca

As a certified sommelier I often describe South African wines as a wine style halfway between the new world and the old. When comparing say a Chardonnay from Burgundy vs Sonoma, or a Cabernet from Bordeaux vs Napa, South African wines tend to find the perfect middle ground between the two. In a blind tasting when there are qualities from both the new world and old world and I’m stuck as to where it could be from, it was usually South Africa.

When the powerful cool Benguela ocean current flowing north from Antarctica mixes with the warm Agulhas current flowing south down the South African eastern coast, a massive churn of worlds collide creating unique conditions for sea life, climate and growing conditions for grapes 🍇

Like Portugal, I find South African wine one of those “under the radar” locations offering great quality at exceptional prices 🇿🇦 💯
