No Do-overs in Paradise from Stephen Collector

“George Anderson, like me, had attended college in Boulder, and upon graduation, had moved to Montana to guide. In the afternoon, when we both felt a sense of torpor from the harsh sun and the effects of the relentless upstream wind, he rowed over to the bank. I asked him to fish. He stripped off a great deal of line to which he’d tied a small dry fly. He loaded the rod and then he double-hauled the line and shot out the entire fly line–all 90 feet of it. The leader straightened out, depositing the fly like a feather. The fly bounced along in the foam and disappeared in a take. Anderson deftly set the hook and played a scrappy cutthroat to net. I was astonished. Little wonder Anderson would go on to an iconic career in fishing.”

Flylab Interview: Jim Bartschi

“The marketing departments often hype the proprietary graphite fibers, but all the carbon fiber is produced by a handful of major industrial producers. Expecting them to make a custom, one-off fiber blend for a small fly rod brand would be like asking Ford or Toyota to build a single custom truck chassis. We all draw from the same foundational material options; the differentiation comes entirely from how you engineer, cut, combine and process those materials.”

Flylab Interview: Bentley Zylstra

“In the age of AI, it has become more and more important to our team and to our readers that these stories are indeed real. No one wants to read great writing that has no soul. Film photography helps with this goal, because it’s really hard to fake film photos. I love the look of film photography. It sounds like a cliché, but I love the imperfections; I love the light leaks, the dust and the weird depth of field. The world has become too picture-perfect. I yearn for a workshop filled with dust, for a drive down a dirt road, or for a small town sign that says, ‘Come back soon!’ Everyone wants the world to become more automated. I want it to be more local and more handmade. At the end of the day, film photography is just a part of that narrative that we carry here at Revelry to slow down and get your body outside…”

Summer on the Stillwater

From Big Timber down, the lower Yellowstone has fewer (but opportunistic) fish that will eat a larger and well-presented dry. Not unlike the Henry’s Fork over in Idaho, downstream, fly-first presentations are required for these big, smart fish. If it clouds over and rains, you can also nuke the banks with sink tips and articulated streamers, but these players have seen it all…

Flylab Interview: David Coggins

“It’s what I call the 90% rule: conventional wisdom works for 90% of people, 90% of the time. That foundation is important, and that’s what you learn first. But how you operate in that remaining 10% is what makes you truly experienced. Writing is the exact same way. What you learn in school gets you through 90% of it, but that last 10% is your personal experience–it can’t be taught, it has to be lived.”

George Daniel: Staying in Motion

“Inside of the competitive fly-fishing space and long before and after, he’s always framed his priority of taking care of his body as it relates to the sport itself, and thinks about his physical preparation in much the same way as an athlete would approach preparation for football, rocking climbing, lacrosse, or a triathlon. But when he spoke about what actually separates a good angler from an average one, he didn’t just talk about strength, mobility, speed, or having the physical capacity to fish hard. ‘It’s the head game,’ he told me. Perfect. On to one of my favorite topics inside of the discussion of sport performance and sport psychology.”

Flylab Interview: Erik Johnsen

“One of our goals is to help folks understand how much more access there probably is than they might be aware of. Obviously, there are very famous waters throughout the country that are easy to find. There are no secrets around them, and they have anglers fishing them every day. But more often than not, there are access opportunities within 30 minutes of that famous river that hardly anybody touches, because it’s not on the radar. It’s either harder to get to, or it gets overlooked because it’s not the famous tailwater or Gold Medal stretch. We hope to help people recognize how much public water exists and how important it is for all of us to maintain and continue to have access to it.”

Most Portable Micro-rafts Only Exploring Garage and Basement Floors

“With the blessing of my editor and publisher, I launched a full-scale undercover investigation into this mystery. Between June and August of 2026, I visited eager sellers across the country to paint as accurate a picture as possible of the American personal micro-raft hopeful, and find out why their dreams had been seemingly shattered. Since they weren’t on the official record, I will use aliases but note their actual locations and ages. What I’m presenting here are the most common responses to the series of questions I asked each seller.”

Joshua Schwartz of Travel Creel Hospitality

Another phrase Joshua shares with his team stood out to me: “You’re cooking for your family at your house.” He mentioned that when he began to share that sentiment with his team, he observed how “you can almost watch the stress immediately leave people’s bodies.” As fly anglers, we know very well that our community is defined by good times spent with good people. For elevated food to work really well inside of fly-fishing travel, it has to be accompanied by people who very clearly love what they’re doing. Joshua’s knowledge of the fly-fishing world and the food world led him to create a hybrid experience that seamlessly blends both cultures.

Quick Flylab PSA on founder Tim Romano and his multi-week Colorado River float through the Grand Canyon…

The flash flooding on Bright Angel Creek caught everyone by surprise, and tragically, there are still people unaccounted for. We’re hoping everyone is okay.

Tim’s group was about 600 yards above Phantom Ranch when the flooding happened. Thankfully, there was a motor rig ahead of them that was able to turn around and tell them to pull off.

They spent a few nights in a makeshift camp, and messaged that they were planning to push out late in the morning and keep heading down river.

“Taffy” from Gary Gillett.

“A cutthroat held in the shadow of a boulder upstream, rising to take something so small he couldn’t see it. He cut the distance in half entering the water with a brief regret at leaving the neoprene socks in the truck. The stream braided around his legs and he guessed the water to be sixty degrees. He could feel it in his ankles before he felt it anywhere else. Two false casts and the fly lay three feet above the fish and he watched it drift. The cutthroat rose and refused.”
