For a very long time, I’ve imagined what it would feel like to finally write this post.

Ten years ago, becoming an airline pilot was just a dream. A dream that, at times, felt incredibly far away. What I couldn’t have imagined then was everything it would take to get here—the long days, late nights, countless hours of studying, checkrides, setbacks, uncertainty, sacrifices, and the moments when I had to remind myself why I started in the first place.

This journey has asked more of me than I ever expected. I’ve sacrificed time, money, relationships, comfort, and more than a few hours of sleep chasing something I knew I wanted for my life. There were plenty of moments along the way when the finish line felt like it kept moving further away, but I kept going.

The last nearly three months have been one of the most demanding chapters of this journey—learning a new airplane, studying systems, practicing procedures, spending countless hours in the simulator, and pushing myself every day to become the pilot I knew I was capable of being.

Yesterday, it all paid off.

I passed my ATP checkride and officially earned my Airbus A320 type rating.

I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, grateful for every person who helped me get here, and humbled knowing how much there still is to learn.

The journey here may be complete, but the adventure is just beginning. Welcome aboard👨‍✈️✈️💙

This morning I had a major lifetime achievement. I officially entered the 1500 hour flight club and am now qualified to become an airline pilot. This is something I have been working towards since I became interested in aviation around a decade ago. I faced a lot of adversity getting into this career and I’m proud to say I overcame every obstacle to fulfill this dream of mine. 👨‍✈️

With only 24 minutes to complete the remainder of my 1500 hours, I decided to surprise my mom with a sunrise flight on Christmas Eve, allowing me to share this milestone with her. This was only possible with her unwavering love and support my whole life. Im so happy I could share that moment with her🎄

Brownsville will always be home.

Every version of me was shaped by the places that I’ve called home— from my roots in Brownsville, to finding myself in San Marcos, to grinding it out and chasing bigger goals in Dallas and Austin. Texas raised me, challenged me, humbled me, and built me.

Leaving home for Texas State was the first big leap. That’s where I learned who I was outside of my comfort zone. Then came ATP Flight School in Dallas — long days, big dreams, and the kind of pressure that forces you to grow up fast. There were moments of doubt, sacrifice, and times where quitting might’ve been easier, but purpose always pulled me back.

And somehow, life brought me full circle.

After leaving home to chase this dream, I ended up right back where it all started — flight instructing in Brownsville. And that has meant more to me than I can put into words. Being able to provide flight instruction in my hometown — something I didn’t even have access to when I was younger — has been such a privilege. Watching students from the same streets I grew up on fall in love with aviation the way I did… that’s special. Seeing aviation grow here, seeing new opportunities open up for the next generation — I’m grateful I got to be a small part of that.

This chapter has been about giving back. About remembering where I came from. About realizing that sometimes you have to leave home to truly appreciate it.

Now it’s time for the next leap.

Denver, I’m coming for you. I’m beyond excited (and a little emotional) to start this new chapter and soon begin my career as an airline pilot. Everything I’ve experienced — every city, every setback, every student, every takeoff — shaped the person I am today.

From Brownsville to wherever the skies take me next.

Today I reached 1000 hours in the sky! I am extremely grateful for every (nautical) mile, every challenge, and every lesson learned along the way. Only 500 hours left until the next chapter—let’s keep flying higher!👨‍✈️ by @flywithbrandon9
