Indigenous Peoples' Day isn't just a date on the calendar. It's a decades long movement built on sovereignty, truth, and community resilience. While it continues to gain momentum toward statutory federal recognition, the path was carved by relentless Indigenous organizing from the ground up:

🟠1977 (Geneva, Switzerland): Over 250 Indigenous delegates from across the Americas broughtbtreaty rights to the world stage at the United Nations International Conference, formally proposing to replace Christopher Columbus Day with a day of Indigenous solidarity.
🟠1990 (South Dakota): Established the first state-level observance by replacing the second Monday of October with Native Americans' Day.
🟠1992 (Berkeley, California): Became the first U.S. city to officially establish Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the 500th anniversary of 1492.
🟠2021 (Washington, D.C.): The first official White House Presidential Proclamation was issued designating the day.
🟠Today, that movement is recognized across 29+ states, over 200 cities, and more than 120 colleges and universities nationwide.

This video is ft @woodburnskateboard and @_peekomeeko - both incredibly talented indigenous skaters using their skills for change in their communities.

This vid was shot at @4kinship Modern Matriarch skate jam we came to help teach skate and support last year - one of the first all women’s skate jams on native land. Some 2,000 people gathered in Big Bear Lake this weekend to mourn the loss of Jackie the Eagle, the beloved bald eagle who captured hearts around the world through a 24/7 livestream.

Jackie died in August after being rescued and spending weeks in intensive care. Her story brought people together, inspiring countless viewers to connect with and care for the wild places around them.

The Big Bear community honored Jackie’s legacy and the connection she fostered between people and nature.

🌾 California has officially made #NativeAmericanDay a paid holiday for state employees.

Celebrated on the fourth Friday of September, the holiday was first recognized in 1998.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1841 into law, making it a fully paid holiday alongside formalizing key tribal support legislation.

Assemblymember James Ramos sponsored the bill to honor the rich legacy, culture, and ongoing contributions of Native American tribes across the Golden State.
