POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It’s my birthday and our fundraising campaign is live! I am in awe of the words of strength and support I have received around this idea that came to me as a whole vision and which I have been called to steward into the material world. What a gift. Still, there is far to go, and we have arrived at the stage where I NEED YOU 🙏🏽

With gratitude, I share with you my wish list:

I am looking to raise funds to cover book and beverage inventory; a bar buildout; possible construction for plumbing; permits and licenses; furniture and design; and staffing for a smooth and cushioned launch.

If you are someone with talent resources to offer, whether that be legal advice, brand and marketing expertise, website creation or other tech skills, general cocktail or bookselling experience, or other small business savvy, I’d love to hear from you and soak up your genius.

New Mexico folks who I have been so lucky to connect with in this chapter of life: I look forward to your elbow grease! Let’s lay tile, put up pretty wallpaper, paint, make the old new, and generally get our hands dirty. This will be such a labor of love.

I acknowledge that it is a hard time to make this ask. As we receive news daily of threats to the institutions we hold dear, I have questioned the urgency of this project. Where I have landed now is that we will need ALL of the gathering places, ALL of the generative spaces, and any and every opportunity for joy imaginable — in particular, local, on-the-ground establishments will be a foothold in our unknown future. I hope to be a glimmer in our collective cultivation of light.

I thank you in advance for your gracious support. If you have questions or want to know more about how to get involved or invest in a bigger way, please contact me at chaya@bloomstaxonomy.co.

Huge thank you to @words_from_chris for your time, patience, and care in putting together this video; @newsguz and @bradsutorphotography for shooting all around town; @spillsmedia for the sweetest logo animation 🐝; and of course @ifundwomen!

Please share and spread the word!! Let’s do this 🫶🏽 by @fobbysnob

friends... i’m sharing something i’ve been working on for a while that has been a light for me in this time and which i hope will one day be the same for you. i don’t know where it fits as we all consider what it could look like to divest from institutions we’ve long relied upon. all i know is that we all have so much to offer each other in ways of care and community — and this is my small effort to carve out a home in this new land i’ve come to, as a stranger, but also a writer and a lover and a fighter. a place for beauty (not a luxury but a birthright), joy (an antidote to fascism), and writing as a practice of liberation. for those who believe it can be that.

*Bloom’s Taxonomy is a bookstore, cafe & bar, and writing/textual arts project space coming soon to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We will be serving botanical cocktails off of a literary-themed menu, and feature a curated collection of texts including experimental prose and poetry; queer, feminist, abolitionist literature; and artist books; with a focus on voices underrepresented in mainstream publishing. “Bloom’s Taxonomy” is based on the pedagogical framework named after Benjamin Bloom that refers to categorization of educational objectives — learning and the exchange of ideas amongst a backdrop that encourages play will be a defining element of the world we are creating between the walls of our business.*

and for those who felt a strong pull toward the plans for the Monte Sol Saloon, thank you — i had begun putting that together as a part of a precursor to this bigger dream. instead, i realized i should do the bigger dream. this is hard, but as I keep telling myself, people have done things before.

i welcome your support in any and all ways. i hope to see you there 🪷

it is impossibly dark on the High Road driving home from town, which i do most nights. this week i could see orange cloud over black mountain, peeking between the trees. i turned off my headlights for a moment, like my dad used to do when we were kids and we’d scream. a week of wildfire haze is in my lungs; i wake up to the smoke settling late, thick and heavy into the valley, just outside the screen door in the bedroom. the dog coughs. i get up, shut every window one by one, hope for it to lift in the morning. at midnight i tried to watch the meteor shower from the deck — the breeze through the cottonwood branches sounded like stars falling. i saw three or four shoot fast across the overhead expanse. beyond neighbor P’s bottom-lit yard sculpture, the flames glow over the cerro piñon ridge: close, feral, casting ghastly forms into the sky. i think often of what i’m doing here, or not doing, what i came for. i often say, “nothing,” when people ask what i’ve been up to. recently a woman i know, horrified, responded: “oh god i hope not!” i had offended her sense of order — the need to do the nameable thing, to make importance of the self. i am here now, listening to star and ember and breath of beast beside me. witness to water sinking into dirt.
spotted feather and coyote crossing.

whisper of caution from dead raven roadside.
i watched flies eat her eyes.

i’ve crossed over. i’ve come home.

we turned left out of the driveway instead of right today; a man asked, who are you and i told him chaya; he said, are you from here are you from nambe pueblo and i said no. we kept going in opposite directions but i said, we’re walking that’s all, and he pointed me that way to the road through his land.
i have thought at length about belonging. here, it’s small things — the spotted horse bowing her head low on my way to the river, gary who doesn’t speak english telling me in that i look like una otra but como se llama el perro.
we read a short passage from robin wall kimmerer tonight, there were only two of us but it was enough, and i kept the line about learning to live in a place as if we’re staying. not having a foot on the boat. then we wrote. so much water in our words — fears of drowning, womb stuff, gold dust in the little tide and the beach sand. i’m on this land. i’m in the land life now. two feet down, heart open. by @fobbysnob

🩺✨ Today my dad hangs up the scalpel- after 50+ years as a vascular surgeon, he retires as Chief Emeritus of Vascular Surgery on his 80th birthday. He’ll keep teaching the next generation of surgeons, just not operating.

🚶‍♂️💨 And fittingly, he’s also what researchers call a “super mover.”

🧠 New research on 80-year-olds who walk as fast as people 30 years younger found they had about half the risk of cognitive impairment compared to their peers -across nearly 4,000 older adults studied.

🔬 Some super movers also showed better-preserved hippocampal volume -the brain’s memory center and slower cognitive decline over time.

🫀 Gait speed isn’t just about leg strength. It reflects how well your brain, heart, muscles, and senses are all working together which is why researchers think it may be a marker of broader biological resilience, not just fitness.

👨‍⚕️ Genetics probably gave my dad a head start. But staying in motion , physically and professionally, for 50 years seems to be part of the story too.

50 years of operating. A lifetime of walking fast. Happy retirement🎂🩺 @wmchealth @nymedcollege @fobbysnob

⚠️ Note: these are observational associations, not proof that walking fast causes better brain health — good cardiovascular/brain health could just as easily be what causes fast walking. A related autopsy-based dementia finding in this research also didn’t reach statistical significance, so it’s not included above.
