🩺✨ Today my dad hangs up the scalpel- after 50+ years as a vascular surgeon, he retires as Chief Emeritus of Vascular Surgery on his 80th birthday. He’ll keep teaching the next generation of surgeons, just not operating.

🚶‍♂️💨 And fittingly, he’s also what researchers call a “super mover.”

🧠 New research on 80-year-olds who walk as fast as people 30 years younger found they had about half the risk of cognitive impairment compared to their peers -across nearly 4,000 older adults studied.

🔬 Some super movers also showed better-preserved hippocampal volume -the brain’s memory center and slower cognitive decline over time.

🫀 Gait speed isn’t just about leg strength. It reflects how well your brain, heart, muscles, and senses are all working together which is why researchers think it may be a marker of broader biological resilience, not just fitness.

👨‍⚕️ Genetics probably gave my dad a head start. But staying in motion , physically and professionally, for 50 years seems to be part of the story too.

⚠️ Note: these are observational associations, not proof that walking fast causes better brain health — good cardiovascular/brain health could just as easily be what causes fast walking. Decided to take up space in this world. To insist on my existence, unapologetically. From the (day after the) womb to the altar, I’ve been blessed to be by your side through it all, watching you in awe as your light shines brighter with each passing year, ready to take over the freaking world. We’ve been there for each other through broken bones, choreographed dances, JTT crushes, sketchy bfs at malls, pacts sealed with chocolate cake, first loves, broken hearts, professional successes, too much tragedy for our little hearts, and lots and lots and lots of unabashed, unforgettable, deep-in-our-souls-kind-of laughter. But I think I just witnessed another huge milestone—marrying that cute jazz musician I first heard about over a decade ago in a beautiful wedding that was so authentically you. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the person you are. You make everyone’s life infinitely better just by being in it, by shining your light on them. Calvin will be the best protector and projector (Beyoncé reference) of that light. You don’t need a protector obvi but we writers love some alliteration. Love you boo @rajji_f_baby ❤️ #weneedatatt
