𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 (Seneca of Six Nations of the Grand River, ON based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, Canada) is an Haudenosaunee artist, designer and curator whose work explores the interconnected relationship of land-body sovereignty. Her work—which blends visual arts, installation and material cultures—has been exhibited across Canada and internationally. Lickers’ provocative aesthetic is rooted in relational consent-building, confronting dominant norms of consumption and access. Amanda’s lens-based practice investigates the place-keeping power of filmmaking, highlighting Indigenous technologies’ role in cultivating land-based futures. As a visitor experience designer, Lickers specializes in collaborative design that embraces the generative relationship between culture and the built environment.

This week, FOFA Gallery is celebrating its 20th anniversary!

Opening its doors one year after the Engineering and Visual Arts Building (EV) was constructed, we became the first university gallery entirely devoted to the diffusion of works by members of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Concordia, by way of exhibitions, performances, lectures, and screenings. Main Space September 8 – November 20, 2026.

The Earth We Carry

Vernissage / La Rentrée : September 10 4:30pm – 7pm, with performance by Moe Clark at 5:30 pm.

Curated by Hanss Lujan Torres, this exhibition brings together six Indigenous artists whose practices move across land, body, and technology, treating these not as separate spheres but as interconnected domains. This gathering unsettles the false division between nature and machine, asserting that humans are constituted through both. We are made of earth, and we are makers of technology. We carry the earth within us and bear responsibility for the technologies produced from its resources.

With artists: Destiny Chescappio, Moe Clark, Kite, Amanda Lickers, Taylor McArthur, Skawennati.

-----

York Vitrines and Courtyard from September 8 – November 20, 2026.

Where you have not first of all to uproot a whole forest

Kandis Friesen

Vernissage / La Rentrée : September 10 4:30pm – 7pm.

This exhibition brings together Friesen’s recent works in video, photography, and wood carving. The exhibition works through a series of graftings that amplify displaced artistic, architectural, and political histories of Soviet Kazakhstan. Grounded in a developing notion of the dispersed monumental, the works trace forms of dislocated historical memory through unofficial archives, land, architecture, and sound. From Stalin-era repressions to post-war Soviet modernism, Friesen approaches histories of exile, incarceration, and dislocation in the former Karlag gulag region of Karaganda, and in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital.

-
