Great foiling starts with the right paper ✨ During our recent visit to the James Cropper mill, we caught up with Jordan and Zoe to talk about something that can sometimes be overlooked when specifying foil - the paper beneath it. From surface texture and coating to density and finish, the characteristics of a paper can have a huge influence on how a foil performs and ultimately, how the finished piece looks and feels. For paper manufacturers, understanding how different papers respond to hot stamping opens up even more possibilities for designers, printers and brands looking to combine beautiful materials with beautiful finishes. It’s why relationships between paper and foil specialists are so important. By understanding how the two materials work together, we can help creatives make more informed choices and get the very best from both. Yes... you can even recycle pigment foil ♻️ One of the biggest misconceptions about foil? That adding it to paper automatically makes it non-recyclable. We're here to change that. When hot stamping foil is transferred onto paper or board, the coating is incredibly thin. So thin, in fact, that is dissipates during the repulping process, allowing the paper fibres to be recovered and recycled. And we have the testing to prove it... Independent testing by SGS demonstrated that even with 80% foil coverage, the repulpability of recyclable paper or board is not affected. But the environmental story doesn't end there. Throughout our latest campaign, we've been exploring the possibilities of pigment foil, from achieving bold, opaque colour to proving that foil doesn't have to shine to stand out. Now, we're taking that conversation one step further. Created as part of our collection within the new James Cropper Paper Portal, these prints are a reminder that beautiful finishing, considered material choices and recyclability can work together. Because sustainability shouldn't mean compromising on creativity. It's about understanding our materials, challenging misconceptions and making more informed decisions about the future of print. Meet our newest foil ... IRIDIUM. Credit - @daisy.kannis.creative Firstly we want to say a huge THANK YOU, to everybody that took the time to comment and share their inspiration and their creativity with us. It’s safe to say this competition surpassed our expectations completely and we were absolutely blown away with the response! Over 160 name suggestions that were funny, creative, clever, unexpected and completely and utterly brilliant! It was such a difficult decision, we wanted to make sure the name chosen sparked an image in your mind when you thought of it. Something that embodied the molten and metallic elements, along with the geological edges and colour spectrum. Iridium is a rare, hard, brittle, and exceptionally corrosion-resistant metallic element. It belongs to the platinum group of metals on the periodic table and is considered the second-densest naturally occurring element on Earth. Although naturally silver coloured, under certain lights it can have a gold element along with the chemical compounds and salts of the metal display giving it a rainbow like finish. Iridium also comes from the Latin & Greek word ‘Iris’, which means Rainbow. WAIT THERE’S MORE ... "You know what it is... “ 🎶 If you came across this image, would you know it's actually foil and not ink? Ink is versatile, beautiful, and always has it's place when it comes to printing. But, on certain projects, using matt or gloss pigment foil can leave you with a more crisp, desirable result due to its opaque nature and colour saturation. These striking images were kindly sent to us by @lauraboast at @conscious.made who told us this is just one of 52 swatchbook cards created for @jukeboxprint, and the design "123 BPM" - is Laura's favourite music tempo (we love hearing the inspiration behind the project!) Whilst exploring the capabilities of Colorplan coloured paper and Foilco foil, Laura quoted "here demonstrates Colour as material + Foil as contrast + Emboss as dimension", showing the bold, precise result of the deboss, and the bold, solid colour of the Obsidian Black foil. Huge thanks to Laura for sending across these beautiful images and continuing to show us that foil doesn't have to shine to stand out.
