A couple months ago, we played “sleep” with a live band for the very first time… and it was magic. Who’s ready for round #2?

Excited to be releasing an upcoming sleep remix with a very special friend THIS FRIDAY. Stay tuned for more deets.

🦦 The image of a river is a tired one. I’ve heard a thousand worship song exhortations asking us to come to the river or table or altar. Pick your poison; they’re all the same. Hey, I’m trying to find fresh metaphors to write songs with and honestly Psalm 1 gets a bit stale. It’s about the blessed man who is like a tree planted by streams of water, but I think most of us identify more with the “wicked chaff” that the wind drives away (same Psalm haha). Most days, I’m chaff. I think about myself way more than my neighbour. I go to Sunday service to listen to the sermon and then I go home and be mean to my family. Honestly, I’m dumb to the miracle of the universe. Occasionally though, something shifts and I’m struck by the realisation of God’s immense love for me. Man, how could I have missed it, this extraordinary, out-of-this-world-kinda love! The steady kind of love that tends to the quiet garden of my soul. The tragic thing is, I know I’ll soon forget and go back to my old wandering ways. But I thank the heavens that God is familiar with these old ways. He knows I’m a prodigal that’s prone to leave the God I love. I guess he never tires of these metaphors of rivers and tables and altars because they are tested and true. Don’t you know that he’ll always invite you near? So there. While you’re here, feed your body’s creek. He’s listening as you weep. Come to the river again.

🌆 I used to think that I’d pick a place of nature as my dream holiday destination. These days however, I’d more readily admit that I am a ‘city boy’ at heart.

There really is so much to love about the city - the architecture; the gathering of peoples across diverse groups; the way it often gathers the most wonderful expressions of creativity. I simply lavish the idea of visiting different cities around the World, imbibing its culture (and coffee!) and simply celebrating all that it captures.

But to dream of a city? Now, that’s a different thing. I’m under no illusion that human cities can be tragically dangerous places too.

Perhaps for that reason, most of our dreams tend to associate with green grass, clear waters, blue clouds - tranquility, and not the vibrancy of city life. If I were to be honest, the vision of a city is not exactly where I imagine myself eventually ending up when this life is over. It’s not quite an image of ‘Heaven’, isn’t it?

And yet, I’m reminded of how the Bible speaks of the end destination of Man as a City of sorts. There, we will dwell with God, forever. The ‘Edenic’ Garden, somehow transforms into a City.

It thrills me to imagine the possibility that everything I love about cities, will somehow be purified, and displayed in the City of God in the most divinely creative and beautiful manner. I begin to dream of how it would reflect the inexplicable greatness and glory of a loving Creator, whilst capturing the goodness of what His created beings have accomplished. Could anything in this life ever compare? I long to know.

And as that thought unravels itself, I find myself drifting like a sailor pining for land, yearning for the day where I will finally arrive on those golden shores - to find out for myself.

🌊 My fiancé loves to reminisce. I don’t think we’ve ever had a conversation where he hasn’t said the phrase “remember when...”. Remember our first date? Remember when we first facetimed my family? Remember our first “deep” conversation? As a task-oriented person (ugh, the worst, I know), I used to think that he was stuck in the past. Yo, there are chores to do! Those taxes ain’t gonna pay themselves! But as most things go, he’s right—reflecting and reconciling with your past allows you to reckon with the future. What did Socrates once say? “An unexamined life is not worth living”. Dang, don’t you hate it when men are right? Ha ha ha.

“Waves” was written at a time when I was having a hard time holding space for my inner child and the hurts she bore that I could hardly remember, let alone grasp. When I sing for the waves to take me away, I’m honestly just praying for peace as I wrestle with my so-called past life. I don’t think it’s ever too late to reexamine and repave. What are you holding on to? Is it a stone of remembrance or is it deadweight? Don’t ever forget that you can always turn around and find out. Remember when?
