POSTS STORIES REELS

In August and September, I could barely catch my breath.

We had a wedding, a coffee pop up, an anniversary party, a farewell, a baby shower, a few birthday parties, and a thousand house reno things. In between, I somehow made it out for a European hot girl summer in Milan (to catch F1!!! What a dream!!!).

It’s easy to grumble when things get busy and it is not untrue that I am often bone tired these days. Yet, we are reminded that warm, tender friendships (Phileo - Greek: phileō, φιλέω) are hard to come by these days. We are grateful for the gift of community.

I love all of you who make my life full. Here’s a poem to sum up the season.

In August, we sent off our 🦋 Jonk to 🇨🇦. Jonk has been a big part of my life in many ways—she knew my husband before I knew him, she introduced me to @yellow.octopus where I’ve been working for more than 5 years, and immediately installed my title as “work wife”. Love you Jonks, and we wish you well for this new season!

Of course, a big shout out to my sis Dorea for capturing our girlhood so well!

For Jonk’s farewell, our black cat friend Hsinyee made a massive three-layer sprinkle cake (the one mentioned in the poem) as a gift. It took 2.5 days, a lot of preparation, an expensive grab express ride, and maybe some grumbling in between.

When she took it out of the box, it was all worth it. We were gobsmacked. I think we were in awe of this labour of love, the kind of quiet servitude that makes people feel truly seen, and loved in the way that they want to be loved. I think we all felt it that day.

Said goodbye to @fransnfam with my favourite Frans. I will miss this season forever. Thank you for making my barista dream come true 💙

Speaking of F.R.I.E.N.D.S… celebrated @narnia.sg’s 7th birthday with this bunch.

I am so grateful to be part of the same community as my husband; to be able to serve together is doubly lovely.

Hold up… is this a @foldandfellow reunion?! For our friend Dora’s wedding, we got to sneak in this little Lizzy McAlpine tune with my #1 wedding hit “Garden” (lol). Thank you for having us Dora, and reminding us how much we like to make music and perform together.

Have been thinking a lot about by @stacecake

12 @fransnfam pop ups over 2 years, by 2 drama-free, delulu girls who can’t sit still.

This era is over, what’s next? @debquek I’ll follow your lead anytime 💙

All photos by the amazing @ador3d.

Shout out to our regular bakers @oakbakes @emmalizt @callingdebsonjf for knocking it out of the park yet AGAIN.

My main squeeze and the most extra man ever @joshua2588. Always going the extra mile to make people feel welcome and trying to cut the queue for “regulars”. The coffee machine you bought me in 2023 has made between 3000-4000 cuppas—an amazing investment, don’t you think?

Let’s pretend the pool spoon incident never happened and gaze upon this perfect Neapolitan pizza. Thanks @ianchew7 @sambalsalachan for slinging nearly 60 pies under the hot noon day sun!

My favourite barista bro, my best F&F friend in all ways. @threechordfaith

It takes a village 🥲

Whisked by hand, no batch brew!!! Done almost always by Abi our little matcha girl.

I love you @abbigailsparty you are the best supporter anyone could ever ask for!!!!!!!

Took me 33 years to discover cold brew peach tea. My new favourite thing, and a welcome gift to wrap up the season.

These beautiful sun-lit photos remind me that we should never take this space for granted. Thank you @mongsandbeeps for opening up your home so many times over the years, your generosity has fostered a safe space for many.

Having kids around (and dogs sometimes) has always been a signature of F&F. We didn’t want to create a sterile, quiet place for people to use the WiFi for 5 hours. It was so great to see parents settle down and enjoy a conversation while the kids naturally made friends and ran around the house.

Barista babes!!!!

None of this would have been possible without our loyal frans and fam who showed up, some almost every time! Thank you for bringing your flock!

Lastly, happy birthday Singapore!!! It seems apt to have our last pop up on your special day. Only in this safe city could we have done such a thing. Majulah!!!! by @stacecake

“Yes, it’s really the last one.”

Over the last couple of weeks, this has been our response to people asking us about the end of Frans & Fam. Honestly, it’s not as sad as it seems—we simply recognise that the season is coming to an end naturally for these reasons:

#1 Our well-loved HQ, the spacious 57 Frankel Avenue will no longer be available for a variety of reasons. Hosting 150-200 people in a weekend is not an easy feat, and no one has been more generous than @mongsandbeeps. We couldn’t imagine doing it anywhere else.

#2 Our founder @debquek and her hubby are in the process of transitioning to long-term missionary work in 2027.

#3 Our other founder @stacecake and HER hubby are busy renovating and moving to their new home in the next few months.

So with that, let’s go out on a high! Maybe F&F will return in a different form in the future, but for now this will be our last time running this at such a large scale. Join us and celebrate all the good times we’ve had over the last two years 💙

Paris. Every morning I kneel at the foot of our tiny bed and recognise that a miracle is taking place. I, lover of cityscape, want to wrap all of its dirty concrete in my arms just to give it a kiss. I know it’s not for everyone, but this place is for those who name moon craters after people they have loved and lost. For the heartsore yet happy. I’m happy. Eyes filled with yellow daffodil; book in hand at the Tuileries. Just a foot in the door is enough for now. Right where it starts it ends. by @stacecake

Amsterdam. Fell in love with a song on the train ride in and listened to it over and over again till I got sick of it (like I often do). Hated most of the food but loved the bookstores that furnished every street corner and the strangers that smiled at us from their tiny balconies.

On the last day, we cycled into the suburbs and got yelled at by tall, beautiful Dutch people when we meandered into the wrong lane. Made it in the end and the kids were so happy to see you. Took a little ride into the countryside and lost your keys twice…. goodness, a core memory moment. It was hard to say goodbye. It always is with family. Let’s come back soon. Oh to be in it, oh to be in it with you. by @stacecake

London. City of unexpected green, secondhand bookstores, and the characteristic, perpetual drizzle. Familiar, written by the same hand. A pleasant jog along the river made us think—how easy it would be to make a home here. Our friend said, consider the 40% taxes. A fleeting dream. Here’s an old poem to distill the memory.

Picnic (2021)

After church, we go to St James’s Park as usual
and settle down near duck island cottage.
Because we are friends of old
the conversation is easy and smart and full.
Everyone gets along swimmingly well.
Soon, the sparkling wine we share fizzles out.
It’s time. The bottle contains the 5’o clock sun
and casts shafts of pale green light all around.
The grey herons and starlings draw close,
drowsy, bold. Still no one moves.
I think we all hear the song, the blessing of the trees,
the wind on our cheeks, a seemingly ordinary kiss. by @stacecake

Exactly one year ago we:

1. fed our guests an entire lechon
2. danced our asses off with our closest pals
3. ...and I got married to my bestie!

Thanks Josh for being the most thoughtful and kindest husband. I love having fun with you! I think we’ve finally found an answer to your perennial question. Where is the love?… it’s wherever you are. 🫠 by @stacecake
