🏅 The South West’s Independent Bookshop of the Year ‘24 & ‘26
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We were delighted to find out this morning that we’d been awarded Best Indie Bookshop in the South West in the @thebritishbookawards aka #thenibbies.

We’re so proud of our team, our supportive partners and of course our customers and community. We’re a bit giddy tbh, but also wanted to give a big congratulations to every bookshop on the shortlist. There’s an amazing array of indies out there doing fab things in their communities. by @foldedorset

We love to tell our shop story. Yes, we know loads of you know it already but for anyone who’s new around here, this is how it all began…

We also know that not everyone can afford to take the risk that we did, and that we’ve had a lot of help along the way from our incredibly supportive community here in Shaftesbury.

But if you’re currently harbouring a dream and are being held back by your own fear, we hope this will inspire you to take the leap. The freefall afterwards is so much more exhilarating than you think. taken in Gold Hill, Shaftesbury by @foldedorset

When does a book tour become a tree tour? When the subject of the book - a venerable, ancient oak - takes over!

Last week, during my wonderful conversation with Jeni @seekingwildsights @foldedorset, Karen told us about the Silton Oak (aka the Wyndham Oak) 1000 years old and still standing, only eight miles from Shaftesbury.

So of course, the next day, the pilgrimage was made, along with fellow pilgrim Terri @healing_gardens, who at the sight of the old oak took off her shoes and wept. 'Oh! A cathedral,' she exclaimed - the exact same words my 18th century Hannah says under her breath in The Wildness, as she goes inside the oak (...and Terri hasn't read the novel yet).

What a tree! What a life it must have known, and mercifully still knows - bright as it is with leaves and vigour.

It was such a special few days. My thanks to everyone @foldedorset and especially Karen and Amber for creating such a community of friends and nature lovers and for my warm welcome that evening + wine and snacks. To Jeni @seekingwildsights for making our conversation so thoughtful, subtle, relevant and uplifting, and to Terri for coming such a long way for the evening (from Nova Scotia) and for presenting me with flowers at the end. Overwhelming.

What a journey a book can take you on! (And another post will describe more...)

Finally, to the old oak at Silton and its human neighbours over the past 1000 years, thank you for taking such good care of each other.

Acclaimed travel writer and filmmaker Simon Parker will make Shaftesbury his destination on Tuesday when he joins us at @thegrosvenorarmsshaftesbury for a conversation about his brand new book, The Wild Road Home.

It’s his account of how, restless for a new adventure but with a small baby, he focused his explorations closer to home by cycling through all 15 of the UK’s national parks in the anniversary year of the first one’s founding, the Peak District. This became a life-changing journey through a landscape, and nation, in flux.

While each of the national parks offered beauty and surprises, all of them revealed the challenges of making space for nature on an overpopulated island. His days within the parks, from Dartmoor to Cairngorms, via the Yorkshire Dales and The Broads, could be idyllic or enraging. He explored wild and remote moors and mountain tops but also got stuck in plenty of holiday traffic. He developed an injury, walked where the bike wouldn’t go, accepted pints and campsite pitches, and talked to everyone he met.

From campers, conservationists, walkers, landowners, farmers, small business owners, commoners, pony lovers, newcomers, tourists, birders and artists – everyone is seeking something different from the hills, dales and waters of the UK. Yet all share the urge for space, fresh air, beauty and the humbled humanity it brings. We’re looking forward to learning more about this revealing perspective of the British and the wild-ish landscapes they love.

🎟️ Tickets are on sale now, both in store and online via our website (you’ll find a handy link in our profile). taken in The Grosvenor Arms by @foldedorset

Our autumn events season wraps up this November with a sparkling line-up that’s guaranteed to pierce the gloom of the longer, darker evenings.

Hot on the heels of Halloween, @sophiepavs and @jowimpenny will be exploring some of nature’s darkest, devilish and most vital species in what’s sure to be a lively and fascinating conversation inspired by their books To Have or To Hold and Beauty of the Beasts.

We’re thrilled to be welcoming conservation biologist and acclaimed author @nehaa_sinha for a conversation with award-winning earth scientist and writer @anjanakhatwa about the hidden wildernesses of the bustling metropolis of Delhi, India. They’ll uncover the wild creatures, ecological histories, and deep sense of meaning that can be found in any city – and indeed, any place – in the world.

Closing our season, storyteller and ecologist @lisaschneidau makes a welcome return to Shaftesbury with her new book, Tree Folk, in which she brings our trees alive through their stories and songs, whether they are rooted in rural magic or modern myth.

Oh, and if you missed out on tickets for @cqgardens first time around, you might just be able to grab one of the handful of returns for her rescheduled event from September. Don’t hang about though...

As ever, you’ll find full details of all our author talks (including those still to come this month) over on our website. There’s a handy link in our profile that will take you to the very page you need, or pop into the shop for the lowdown! taken in Shaftesbury by @foldedorset

We were interested to read in an article in The Bookseller this week that, according to a new YouGov poll, most bookshop visitors say browsing the shelves lifts their mood, helps them switch off from social media, and offers a little comfort during difficult times. It’s something we’ve long sensed at FOLDE, both with our customers and in ourselves, but it’s lovely to see it backed up by research.

So as tomorrow happens to be both Bookshop Day and World Mental Health Day, you could do worse than pay a visit to your local bookshop, whether you’re after a new read, a peaceful moment among the shelves, or simply somewhere to browse without an algorithm deciding what you see next.

Here at FOLDE, we’ll be celebrating with double loyalty card points, plus a voucher* to redeem online for a free £5 Book Token when you spend £10 or more on books in store. What’s more, somewhere among the shelves, we’ve hidden a special golden ticket: the lucky finder will win 12 audiobook credits from the wonderful people at @librofm, an audiobook platform that directly supports independent bookshops like ours. And if you sign up to our mailing list in store, you’ll be entered into a draw to win a three-month paperback book subscription.

Most of all, though, we’d love you to come and spend a little time with us, browse, chat, discover something unexpected, and enjoy the particular kind of calm that only a bookshop can offer. We’ll meet you among the bunting!

Next Tuesday we welcome @anne.keer to the @thegrosvenorarmsshaftesbury for a conversation with @seekingwildsights about oak trees, historical fiction, wildness, our place in the more than human world, and her debut novel, The Wildness.

As the Enlightenment dawns, Hannah Sentance finds herself increasingly disturbed by her husband Walter’s unyielding desire to transform the land around their estate into an elite Gentleman’s Park. Local people will be evicted, an old way of life lost and an ancient oak tree felled. A symbol of resistance, wildness and a young woman’s love affair with nature, the tree embodies Hannah’s struggle for a way of belonging. But how can she - and it - survive?

Anne has been a brilliant supporter of Shaftesbury’s Book Festival, Reading the Land, over the years and we’re delighted that she’s finally taking her turn on the stage. Want to join us? Find the ticket link in our bio, or wend your way to buy in person from FOLDE HQ. taken in The Grosvenor Arms by @foldedorset

@foldedorset are now in possession of a very special copy of ‘The Tree Zodiac’ ordering directly from their wonderful independent bookshop is the only way to own it.
They’ll choose a recipient at random from the next week of orders.

Feeling grateful to support independent bookshops and a very special one at that.

We may be almost a week into October but you surely still want to know about September’s bestsellers, right?

So with apologies for our tardiness, here’s the top ten for last month, set in our customary fashion to an absolute banger from an era when an evening out began at the time we now go to bed 😆

As you’ll see, the return of our author events programme has mixed things up a bit but there are no prizes for guessing which long-eared, amber-eyed creature is comfortably resting at the top of the pile. taken in Gold Hill, Shaftesbury by @foldedorset

We’ve got such a fondness for autumn; the gentle seasonal shift that brings the softening of the air, and the crisp and crackle of walking over beech nuts. There’s the first signs of the year settling down, putting itself to rest, ready to start the process of recovery and renewal.

Also, it’s an excellent excuse (as if one were needed) for crisp walks, hot chocolate or a pint by a roaring pub fire, or hunkering down with a good book. We can help with the latter of these, and give recommendations for the other two 😁
