review: off the reservation 🔪🩸

I worship at the altar of SGJ !!

Off the Reservation picks up a few years after The Only Good Indians, with Nate Yellow Tail getting caught up in a scheme to retrieve the bones of murdered boy who was taken from the Blackfeet reservation to Carlisle Indian Boarding School in 1898.

In a days long road trip with a ragtag group, loaded into a dilapidated RV, Nate goes on journey both physically and mentally/emotionally/spiritually. Jones expertly weaves narratives of grief and loss, revenge, legacy & identity - what it means to be a “Good Indian,” whose history gets remembered - and so much more throughout this story. There is A LOT that goes on and you need to pay attention to detail while you read, but it pays off so satisfactorily for the reader. The threads throughout this book are so expertly woven!

SGJ is a master of taking a genre and all of its conventions & tropes, and turning them completely on their head in a way that is so smart and so satisfying for the reader!!! I don’t think I’ve encountered many non-religious possession narratives, and despite the secular tilt of the story, we still manage to hit some of the typical story beats but in so many unexpected ways. Possession in this is framed more as colonization, and despite the conventional priest figure and a quasi exorcism, you cannot guess the way things turn out in this!

I read most of this with a permanent grimace on my face, once again enraptured (and grossed out!) by SGJ’s skill at writing the most gruesome and grisly gore imaginable.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR.
Pardon me as I turn this into a full Day & Night review but wow! This was so FUN and only CRJ could offer a double album that never once feels bloated or like it’s doing too much. You can tell how much FUN she had making this, it is so experimental and INTERESTING and takes chances which pop has not been doing lately. Even if every song might not work for everyone (skill issue imo they all work for me), I think it’s so fun that she’s trying something new. Some songs are so synthy, some so jazzy, others sound like you’re spending a hazy night in a club/on a dancefloor. They take chances and do weird things with tempos and beats, there are unexpected saxophone solos on some songs and even a return by @folkloreandfiction

“I’ve been hungry for four centuries, but she makes me feel starved”

I’m convinced this book was made for me: 30yr old millennial woman who grew up at the height of a vampire resurgence in media and has never quite gotten over it !! Inject it into my veins pls! And bc of this, pls accept this entirely too long review with so many memes bc I just can’t shut up about it !!

This was an absolute delight to read. It was so silly and so fun, and the premise of an office romance balanced the existential angst and yearning of a 400 year old vampire so well!

Molly hates her IT job but you know what sucks more? Losing out on a promotion to an OUTSIDE hire who doesn’t even know what a VPN is. Said outside hire is Elijah; a technologically impaired vampire who just like the rest of us, succumbs to the crushing weight of living in a capitalist hellscape. Despite their rocky start, they become friends. Molly is charmed by him despite her best efforts, and Elijah loves it when she’s mean to him - they are a perfect pair.

Elijah Thorne the man that you are !!!! The way he was obsessed with Molly from her very first insult had me kicking my feet giggling. They had great chemistry, and the banter was so funny. I laughed, i cried, I will be rereading and buying a copy.

I also loved the vampire lore in this- I often find that modern vampire romances can be overly sanitized, stripping vampires of everything that makes them monstrous (and sexy!). They are left with nothing more than a weird diet. Like lots of guys are drinking mysterious substances from a travel mug, be it vampire or gym bro, so what makes this guy so special? Modern vampire media is often lacking what I love so much about the creatures - the grappling with their inner monstrousness, their morality, existential dread of eternity, and quite frankly, the INTIMACY of how they feed/kill.

(Caption continues in next slide)

And so I really enjoyed that even though Elijah has had centuries to come to terms with his blood lust and that isn’t his main struggle, his vampirism isn’t all clinical and sanitized, it can be at times, but it also keeps what I love about vampires - it’s hot, sensual, intimate in ways that by @folkloreandfiction

🖊️📋(mostly) human resources 📋🖊️

Alexys and Nic work for Entity, a private company tasked with categorizing & “managing” magical beings, cryptids & the like. These pencil pushing office rivals get sent out into the field when a colleague goes missing, & despite their vast theoretical knowledge of the creatures that go bump in the night, what they encounter is worse than they imagined.

It felt like an episode of the x-files set in Appalachia, blending the mundane of bureaucracy with eldritch horrors in a deeply unsettling way. All with a bit of yearning & a couple I was never quite sure was endgame or not. Despite some issues, this was a very enjoyable read & a perfect way for me to kick off my fall reading.

I loved the short chapters! I was eating this up, constantly saying “just one my chapter” late into the night!

I also loved the main characters, Alexys and Nic were so fun to read. Their banter was great and their gradual development of feelings was SLOW but enjoyable.

The spooky vibes were also so well done- perhaps too well done, I was unsettled. The Appalachian mountains sound horrifying and this captured that so well. It was actually more gruesome than I expected!

As mentioned, I loved the bureaucracy and world building behind this - to take the supernatural and somehow make it mundane (& still be so terrifying through the red tape) is hard to execute but I think this succeeded!

I will say I had a bit of an issue with the pacing - i know this is the first book in the series and the romance will likely be developed further in the sequel, but I wish it had a bit more payoff earlier on, considering that this was marketed as a romance.

I also didn’t love the set up for the forced proximity - they are stuck in the woods basically for the entire book, so the scene where nic changes Alexys’ hotel reservation from a single to a double really didn’t add anything, apart from being creepy.

Overall, I did have a fun time with this and finished it quite quickly despite my few quibbles with it. I can’t wait to read the (as of now, still) untitled sequel!

🧡sapphic september hopefuls🧡

I love sapphic september! I love seeing everyone post about their fave sapphic books, I love adding everyone’s recs to my overflowing tbr, and I love love love that I’ve read so many sapphic books (more than teenage me could have even fathomed !)

My physical tbr is a bit out of hand at the moment but the more I think about it… kinda iconic to have a huge stack of sapphic books at the ready, don’t you think?

I have so many sapphic books on my radar, but since I want to work on my physical tbr, these are the four that I’m going to pick from this month- my goal is to read at least two of these. September is officially fall to me, so I tried to pick books that fit that vibe, but also have some possible audiobooks and ebooks lined up as back ups in case my reading moods change

- Fun home: graphic novel - I probably will start with this since it’s been on my physical tbr the longest!
- Last night at the telegraph club: historical fiction, I’ve heard such good things about it!
- Big swiss: I just know this is weird girl lit fic and I love the cover. I am still mourning the tv show with Jodie comer that never was 😔
- Dead dead girls: sapphic historical murder mystery! Sign me UP

✨what are you reading? I am taking notes and always adding sapphic books to the tbr

Here are also some recommendations for my fave sapphic books ive read over the years - what a delight that this is only a fraction of them !

***EDIT: I FORGOT TO INCLUDE AMAL EL-MOHTAR PLS READ SEASONS OF GLASS AND IRON IDK HOW I FORGOT IT***

(also, how much can lit did I manage to sneak into this? 👀)

🌞august wrap up🌞

What a month!!! A mixed bag with some shitty days but some absolutely wonderful bright spots!!!

I saw my beautiful lovely friends so often, I fulfilled my childhood dream of seeing Hilary Duff live, I went to a cottage, went on a heated rivalry pilgrimage, read lots of books, and got my ass kicked at bananagrams. Life is good (except for that last part)

I also started rewatching the x-files (insert that “stop stop I’m already bi” meme), watched a league of their own for the first time in years (still such a banger), and rewatched iwtv once again now that I’ve read the book. Overall a great month media wise.

⭐️book review⭐️

My first Naina Kumar! I picked this up after seeing @hyperfixatedreader ‘s glowing review and I have seen the light. I had the best time reading Just A Highland Fling- it got me out of a rly rough romance reading slump, and I can’t wait to dive into more of Kumar’s books! I’ve just borrowed Say You’ll be Mine from my library, and I cannot wait to start it.

Okay, onto the review: I love a grief book and I love complicated family dynamics and I love a swoony romance!!! And Naina Kumar delivered on all of this and then some !!

I love Neelu and Jacob so much, their particular traumas and hang ups made the development of their relationship and the many obstacles so realistic and understandable. It was so lovely how they grew throughout the book. They had great chemistry immediately, and just loved their dynamic so much. He’s a bagpiping poet and she’s a reality tv producer, and despite their differences, they complemented each other SO WELL.

I also loved the messy family dynamics- Neelu and her father’s relationship was so complicated!! Tainted by so much hurt, grief and fear. It was refreshing to read about a parental dynamic where nothing is black and white, forgiveness and healing take time and might never fully happen. I liked how their relationship wasn’t all or nothing - we saw bits and pieces of a new relationship forming, but we don’t have a clear picture of what this relationship will look like. I loved how raw and realistic this was.

I also loved the many kinds of grief that were depicted in this book, and how it shapes relationships and expectations. I love a grief book when it’s well done and not just tossed in for added backstory, and this was absolutely well done. I felt it added to the story and wasn’t included as an afterthought.

I had some minor issues with pacing near the end (& with the unrealistic depiction of someone walking into an optometrist with no prescription and leaving with glasses ten mins later) but otherwise loved this. I couldn’t put it down, I can’t remember the last time I finished a romance so quickly!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25

It also just made me want to book a trip to Scotland !!! by @folkloreandfiction

🩸my heart is a chainsaw🩸

Every single time I pick up a Stephen Graham Jones book, I think “wow I’ve never read anything like this before.” He is such an obvious fan of the horror genre that he’s able to somehow both follow a typical slasher formula and defy the genre all at once.

My Heart is a Chainsaw follows Jade, our 17yr old slasher aficionado. She’s obsessed with slasher films, can recite lines from memory, commits to the bit a little too hard at times when pranking her peers at the local high school (the blood and blades were fake she swears), and writes all her history essays on the history of the genre she loves so much.

When strange things start happening on Indian Lake in her small town of Proofrock, Idaho, she knows exactly what’s going on: the town is obviously living out the plot of a slasher, duh! And since jade knows all the rules and tropes of the genre, she knows exactly what’s going to happen (spoiler, things get crazier than even jade can imagine), even if no one believes her.

I struggled with this a bit at first- the sheer volume of Jade’s slasher references meant that I was googling as much as I was reading. But then work you have to put in to this book is so 100% worth it. It’s a slow burn if you can say that about a slasher. You spend a lot of time on the edge of your seat, just waiting with bated breath - is this really a slasher? Is anything supernatural going on? Are Jade’s predictions correct? It all starts to come together and really pays off so deliciously in the last 125 pages or so. I literally could not put it down and stayed up way too late to finish it.

If you’re looking for a summer slasher i definitely think this is the perfect pick: it’s set in a sleepy town during the summer, when everyone congregates around Indian Lake, haplessly waterskiing and swimming in the chilly waters that might have something very sinister going on below the surface.

…caption continues in next slide of carousel

My favourite thing about this book, apart from the way it is in part an ode to the horror genre, and the final girl more specifically, is how Graham uses the genre (and at times turns it on its head) to get at so much more.
