The first National #folklore survey for England in 60 years has been announced. The 2 year project, funded by @ahrcpress with partners the Folklore Society, the Folklore Library & Archive, and the Folklore Museums Network. It will be led by Dr. David Clarke @Centre_4_Legend.

Dr. Peter Hewitt, of the FMN said: "Since 1960 there has been a 300% growth in museums (including displays in museums) that deal with belief and identity - this is around one third of all museums in England[1]. This new National Folklore Survey will create datasets that will enable new and accurate museum displays, charting change and continuity in English society. This survey will provide amazing, rich information about the state of folklore in the country today, and give museum curators incredible material to work into their interpretation and displays. We are really looking forward to working with David and the team to raise awareness of the #NFS and its findings across the museum sector." by @folkloremuseumsnetwork

St. Ann's Well, Buxton. In Roman Britain, Buxton (sometimes written Buckstones) was known as Aquae Arnemetiae,  or the 'Waters of Arnemetia'; Arnemetia was the Romano-British goddess of the sacred grove, which was cut down to clear the area where this impressive 18th century crescent spa/hotel now stands. The geothermal spring - the water here is a warm 29 degrees c - fed a Romans bathhouse/cistern here. A hoard of Roman coins were found nearby suggesting devotional use of the spring from that time.

A memorandum from the 1460s (CE) reads "... that Holywell ... makes many miracles, making the infirm healthy, and in winter it is warm, even as honeyed milk." This 'holy well' was known as St. Ann's from around 1521, and the current well has a bronze statue of St Ann and her child, designed by the English sculptor Herbert William Palliser (1883–1963).

Just posting this a few days after the wonderful collaborative @folkloremuseumsnetwork @universityofdurham and @sewanee_univofthesouth conference in #Buxton this week. Great news for Christmas Eve 🎄!

The UK Government is planning to ratify the Convention for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This is a big step forward for the potential protection and fostering of living traditions and folklore in the UK and its overseas territories. But it requires as many people as possible to engage with the survey here:
