Join us at this year's @dutchdesignweek for our exhibition "SPACES FOR FUTURES", hosted at @sectie_c!

SPACES FOR FUTURES, presented by the Space for Sustainability by Design (SBYD.SPACE) at Folkwang University of the Arts, showcases how design and art can respond to the challenges of our present and contribute to shaping possible futures. The exhibition brings together thirteen projects addressing the consequences of resource use and imagining new possibilities for sustainable living and production.

Works and activities from SBYD’s six working groups – SPACE FOR TECH, SPACE FOR REPAIR, SPACE FOR TEXTILES, SPACE FOR FOOD, SPACE FOR BIOMATERIALS and SPACE FOR NARRATIVES – create opportunities through design to discuss, experiment with and reflect on more sustainable practices.

The exhibition also debuts work by four artists and designers-in-residence from Mexico and Ghana, developed during their residencies as part of the SBYD Residency Programme. Joseph Kofi Awumee (@joseph_awumee), Angel Estrada López (@stillnotandre_barradi), Aseye Fiagbe (@aseye.fiagbe) and Emiliano Hernández Sánchez (@emilianosanchezmx) present works ranging from sculpture and film to installations and food design. Two students from Folkwang University of the Arts, Karolina Błońska (@_karolinablonska.com_) and Bastian Engel (@bastian.engel), present projects on materials, manufacturing processes, and urban habitats for non-human life.

ZEIT IN FORM
Maja Kaiser

At first glance, it appears to be an ordinary taper candle. However, as soon as the candle is lit, a time window opens in which a balancing process takes place, similar to that of an hourglass: a transition from remaining time into elapsed time occurs. The white wax of the candle thus represents the time still remaining, while a black carbon rod, which moves upward in proportion to the candle burning down, makes the elapsed time visible. The flame of the candle therefore does not move steadily downward as usual, but instead remains at the same height throughout the entire burning duration.
In using the object, one repeatedly encounters this unexpected moment in which the candle does not simply burn down until nothing but a small residue of wax remains, rather, the passage of time becomes visible, leaving behind an exact trace, an exact transformation of future into past.

The object is entirely analog and based on simple physical principles.

COLLAPSIBLES: Folding, Bending, Plugging, Folding, Rolling – Adaptable Furniture as a Flexible and Sustainable Solution

The work “Collapsibles: Folding, Bending, Plugging, Folding, Rolling – Adaptable Furniture as a Flexible and Sustainable Solution” examines collapsible furniture. Its adaptability enables it to respond to a changing environment and different needs. My design is an alternative to established modular systems such as USM Haller or the FNP shelving system. The piece of furniture is freestanding and features standardized compartments for vinyl records and DIN A4 folders. Only an Allen key is required for assembly. Its greatest strength is its flexibility: it can be assembled, transported, expanded, and customized by one person. Durable materials enable it to be used for decades. In this way, the furniture can move with its users and evolve over time. It encourages exchange between generations, groups of people, and different interests, while remaining a long-lasting companion. This allows it to adapt to new life situations and changing wishes.

VOM ANKERLOCH ZUM ANKERPUNKT

When a concrete wall is cast, the forming process leaves holes in a regular pattern. During my research, I stumbled across this artefact of creation. The holes are then sealed and become useless – I wanted to change that. A colourful plug turns each hole into a deliberate detail and a mounting point. Anchor, don't drill: the wall becomes a pegboard where a family of inserts – hook, rod, shelf, socket, lamp – attaches reversibly. Architectural concrete becomes approachable and adaptable.

AXIS
Ilqar Didari

AXIS is a modular clothing and storage system that makes use of the vertical dimension of living spaces. A telescopic pole tensioned between floor and ceiling forms the central axis, onto which multiple ring modules can be positioned flexibly. The modules accommodate aluminium rods and textile elements, creating different levels for storage and organisation. The system is open, expandable and adaptable to different spatial conditions. Especially in small or spatially challenging apartments, AXIS offers an alternative to conventional, static wardrobes. The design combines functional organisation and accessibility with a sculptural presence within the living space.

HEXAPHON & POSITION

City Roosts by Karolina Błońska (@_karolinablonska.com_)

City Roosts are bat boxes designed for urban spaces and tailored to the common pipistrelle, one of Europe’s most widespread bat species. As urbanisation and the loss of old trees reduce natural roosting sites, the project explores how design can support bats as an essential part of the urban ecosystem. The triangular chambers draw inspiration from peeling bark on old and dead trees. Made from wood scraps transformed into a flexible material system, the boxes embrace organic forms and the material’s natural texture. The project challenges human-centred assumptions in design by responding to non-human needs and material possibilities.

This project will be shown as part of our upcoming exhibition at Dutch Design Week.

REMI: Schuhanpassung von zu Hause

This project develops a system for individually customized footwear that enables the fitting process to be carried out from home. The concept addresses the time and effort often involved in producing orthopedic insoles and finding suitable footwear. Users order a pair of shoes and receive a foam impression kit to capture the shape of their feet. The impression is then returned together with photographs of the feet. An A4 sheet of paper serves as a scale reference for evaluating the images.

Based on this data, a digital foot model is created, which can then be used to design, manufacture, and ship customized footwear. The concept is developed and subsequently tested in practice using the designer's own foot. For this purpose, the foot, the orthopedic insole, and the foam impression are digitally captured and incorporated into the design of a 3D-printed shoe prototype.

The project combines a decentralized fitting system with a practical design and technical implementation in the field of product design.

THE BILDSCHIRMSTÄNDER-ERGO1 (BSS-E1)

The Bildschirmständer-Ergo1 (BSS-E1) moves the screen slowly along a shallow U-shaped path. These changes in position are intended to encourage users to follow the screen with their gaze and head, interrupting static postures. Small movement impulses are integrated into everyday work without additional exercises or deliberate breaks. The BSS-E1 combines a two-axis mechanism with a restrained design and provides a basis for further research.

Air as a structural element.

Strollers are a key means of transport for many new parents. Despite ongoing developments, existing systems have limitations in terms of portability. This is due to the predominantly frame-based chassis with rigid tubular structures, which result in a large packed size.

Inspired by inflatable structural elements from kitesurfing, various material systems, manufacturing processes and design principles were analysed and assessed for their applicability to this field.

During the development process, various functional and prototype models were created, which led to new insights and offered opportunities for further development. The result is a lightweight, compact and quick-to-assemble mobility product that makes targeted use of the structural properties of air and opens up new perspectives for product design.

LINK & ALIGN – Safety through connection

The spatial concept transforms the entrance area of Dräger Safety AG & Co. KGaA into an interactive experience. Stakeholders see firsthand how communication influences the development of safety products.

Changing requirements reveals underlying connections. Using the example of a respirator, variants are created that illustrate the relationships between requirements and impacts. At communication stations, requirements are discussed collaboratively and refined through consensus. Light, sound, and smoke effects create an emotional connection to the user’s perspective. The process follows the principle: link & align — safety through connection.

The project was developed in collaboration with Dräger Safety AG & Co. KGaA.
