🌟 Inspiring the Future of Fashion! 🌱✨

Thrilled to witness talented students all over the world exploring the endless possibilities of the Kniterate machine. 🧵🎓 They are the driving force, destined to lead the fashion industry into a sustainable and innovative future. 🌍👗

Let’s champion creativity, sustainability, and the next generation of designers! 🚀🌿

“A throwback to last month’s Kniterate Workshop 👀 🧶

As part of the @sbyd.space Space for Textiles, a team of @folkwang_id researchers explored techniques of machine knitting, together with the team of @rubmakerspace.

Under the guidance of the @textile_prototyping_lab, a variety of knitting samples were realized on hand knitting machines and on the digital Kniterate machine.

The Space for Textiles at Folkwang is part of the Sustainability by Design (@sbyd.space) project and explores the question which contribution the design of textiles can make to sustainable ways of living and production. ”

As a RESEARCH BY DESIGN project the Folkwang Embassy team chose the topic of designing a TORCH:LIGHT. A torch is an object loaded with many negative and positive meanings. We decided to approach the topic by ways of a Modernist design process. And our aim was: “What if we could design a torch with a positive meaning? What if we could design a TORCH for PEACE?”
For our research we started to collect different types of torches and looking at how torches were used in history: We found torches used in pagan rituals, torches “for freedom”, torches used for right wing rallies, Olympic torches, torches used for propaganda and torches in Art and Design.
As an example for the principle of PASSING THE TORCH, we had the original Torch of the Olympic Games in Munich 1972 by Otl Aicher on display – the supposedly “cheerful games” that ended up in tragedy. Facing global conflicts, such as war in Ukraine or the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, we decided to design a TORCH FOR PEACE.

Before we started the design process, we were reflecting on the role of designers and design education. Questions kept coming up in our discussions, such as...
- Are we even capable of designing such an object?
- Is it even relevant if we do?
- Can a PEACE TORCH be more than a simple symbol?
- What would the semantics of a peace torch look like?
- What is peace anyway?

For the panel discussion COFFEE + DIALOGUE, moderated by Student Ambassador Karen Druebert, we were happy to welcome prestigious guest experts, each representing various aspects of our research. These were:

- Prof. Josh Owen, Vignelli Center of Design Studies RIT for TIMELESSNESS
- Prof. Alex Lobos, Director of the School of Design at RIT for INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE
- Prof. Martin Middelhauve, FH Dortmund for INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE
- Prof. Alexandra Martini, FH Potsdam for DESIGN METHODS
- Holm Giessler, Industrial Designer at ERCO GmbH for MODERNISM AND INDUSTRY (and today’s challenges)
- Prof, Sebastian Goldschmidtböing, KISD (Köln International School of Design) for MODERNISM + FUTURE
- Prof. Marion Digel, Folkwang University of the Arts for MODERNISM + FUTURE

The central question of our panel “Backtracking Modern Times. Are the ideas of Modernism sufficient to solve 21st Century problems?" was discussed from many perspectives. To read the full review of the panel, see the log book on our website (link in bio).
Thanks to the students of the HfG Offenbach for their active participation in the discussion!

One of the highlights of our one year event was the presentation of the work of the International Student Ambassadors. Celina Kroder, Tayo Oke and Zaheer Shuyajee talked about their experiences as Ambassadors and about conducting a workshop for Design Graduate Students in the other country at the partner University. They talked about cultural differences and similarities, about their exchange on views and expectations on design in the 21st century and about their Workshop concepts of the Workshops LIGHT + LIMINALITY and “LIGHT + MODULARITY. Both topics were about light and centered around ideas of Modernism to make them comparable.

The results of the LIGHT + MODULARITY workshop were on display in the exhibition. As the entire event was hybrid, embassy member Carl gave a digital tour of the exhibition, allowing the design students to present their urban light designs to our guests from all over the world.

On November 2nd we celebrated “1 Year Future Design Embassies – International Student Ambassadors” with a big event at the Saana Building on the World Heritage Site, Zollverein. The Folkwang Embassy Team (Karen Druebert, Celina Kroder, Lilli Seiler, Carl Vollmer, Alina Rogge, Marion Digel) staged an exhibition and a symposium on the whole first floor of the SANAA Building for many interested visitors to present everything we did in the one-year research project funded by the “Stiftung für Innovative Hochschullehre”.

Our guests were greeted by an interactive projection with the most important quotes and questions from our research designed by multimedia artist Anastasija Delidova.

In a replica installation of our embassy office, including our two clocks with the two time zones of CET or Essen and EST for Rochester, the guests were able to check into our event with the "embassy secretary". There also was our relevant literature and photos of the activities in this past year on display.
