corporate AI to food forest guy
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I used to have to spell my last name for people, but now whenever I tell people my full name they usually say “Oppenheimer, like the movie?”

Yes, that’s right, and while I don’t share an ancestral connection with the creator of the atomic bomb as far as I’m aware, I too studied physics, & then began working on the most powerful and potentially destructive technology of the time: artificial intelligence. I quit my job a couple years ago, when I saw that the industry was racing towards a very risky future.

This week, 1324 employees of the biggest AI companies in the world (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) have signed an open letter, asking the US government to help them slow the F down before AI catastrophe.

Okay, those weren’t the exact words they used.. they said:

“We request that the U.S. government support an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.”1

Below the letter are quotes from many of the signatories, and the theme is clear.

- The pace of AI development has been shocking & keeps speeding up as AI is used to improve AI.
- Many think we may be close to “recursive self-improvement”, where AI can make the next, more intelligent version of itself autonomously, creating a loop of advancement sometimes called an “intelligence explosion”.
- We don’t know if humans could remain in control in such a situation, and, quite frankly, we don’t know if we would survive it.

They all want the option to slow down, but feel stuck in a system of incentives that forces everyone to keep racing. We’re being tested to see if we can put aside our differences and collaborate on a global scale to install an emergency brake.

Governments act when there is widespread public pressure, which means there is something we can all do in our own little way.

P.S. if this is all new to you and you want 1 first step to learn more, I highly recommend watching “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist”2
