Last week, we reached a major milestone—500 million pounds of produce recovered since 2009! šŸŽ‰

That’s 500 million pounds of surplus fruits and veggies rescued from going to waste, and instead, redirected to nourish communities across Southern California and beyond. 🧔

Reaching 500 million pounds of recovered produce didn’t happen overnight.

It took the dedication of our volunteers, the strength of our community partners, and the power of three unique programs: Wholesale Recovery, Backyard Harvest, and Farmers Market Recovery.

Tap through to see how this milestone translates into meaningful change for people and the planet. šŸ§”šŸŒ±šŸŒŽšŸŠ

ā€œā€˜Share the abundance’ is not just a slogan, it’s a way of life. We need to get people out of their own selfish ways and realize how much they have that they can share. It doesn’t have to be fruit; it could be money, time, love... We all have abundance; we just need to find out what it is, and give it.ā€ -Rick Nahmias, Food Forward Founder & CEO

Farmers šŸ¤ Food Forward

Every week, farmers donate their surplus produce at the end of farmers markets, like the Hollywood Farmers Market, where we spoke with Alex Weiser from Weiser Family Farms.

Alex is the Farmer Chair at our upcoming event, Tomorrow’s Table, honoring the community of supporters who make our work possible. We love hearing why farmers support our work and want to donate their surplus produce, because none of this would be possible without the people who grow our food. 🧔

Want to get involved in our Farmers Market Recovery program? Sign up to volunteer for an upcoming glean by visiting the link in our bio.

Comment ā€œVOLUNTEERā€ and I’ll send you the link to find an upcoming Food Forward harvest and sign up!šŸŠšŸŒæ

Calvin and I spent the morning volunteering with Food Forward this weekend, harvesting surplus grapefruit from trees here in Los Angeles that otherwise might have gone unpicked! After a quick training, we grabbed our picking poles and got to work… and by the end of the harvest, our group had filled more than 20 boxes!!!

Food Forward works throughout Southern California to rescue fresh produce and connect it with hunger-relief partners in our communities. I love seeing such a simple idea in action: food that’s already growing + a few hours of time = fresh produce going somewhere it can actually be eaten! A dream.

LMK if you sign up to volunteer, maybe we’ll cross paths at a harvest this fall! šŸŠ

More food recovery loading... coast to coast! 🤩

We’re welcoming two new mentees to our Farmers Market Recovery Mentorship Program for 2026.

We took our Farmers Market Recovery model national for the first time in 2025, mentoring two incredible organizations, @farmfreshri and @rachelstablewesternma, as they scaled their own programs to rescue fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste. Now we’re welcoming two new mentees, @glean_ky and @slzhelp, and they are learning all about launching and scaling their own gleaning programs! Pictured here are photos from Food Forward staff visiting with our 2026 mentees on-site.

We’re so grateful to @novonordisk for helping us share our knowledge so we can bring more nutritious produce to communities around the country. Cheers to growing the food recovery movement alongside amazing people! šŸŠ by @foodforward

Alice Waters (@alicelouisewaters) built her name on the belief that good food is a matter of dignity and access, and that a farmer’s harvest should never go to waste. Food Forward puts that belief into practice, recovering the surplus fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be lost and getting them to communities experiencing food insecurity. Her message to the culinary world is clear. Recovery is where good food finds its purpose.

Join us at Tomorrow’s Table, a benefit that supports communities in need, honoring Alice Waters and bringing together leading culinary voices and leaders around the future of food recovery. National Farmers Market Week may have concluded over the weekend... but we’ve been busy all summer-long sharing our Farmers Market gleaning expertise with the food recovery field! šŸŠā¬‡ļø

This year, as organizations reached out to Food Forward about our Farmers Market Recovery Mentorship program, our staff noticed people also wanted guidance on specific topics… so we listened and built something new: a summer workshop series led by our own team of gleaning experts! 🤩

From building trust in the farmers market space, to volunteer recruitment and equipment/storage, these virtual workshops meet organizations where they are, with practical, field-tested knowledge from people who do this work every day.

Want in? EmailĀ volunteer@foodforward.org, or comment ā€œvolunteerā€ to join our volunteer newsletter and stay up-to-date about our events.

Thank you to our staff for leading these sessions, and to every organization tuning in this summer! Food recovery is stronger when we learn from each other. 🧔 taken in Los Angeles, California by @foodforward

We’re not gonna say every volunteer shift is this famous, but some of them really are (or at least just as gorgeous!) šŸ˜‰

Whether it’s @thehuntingtonlibrary, once a working citrus ranch before it became home to a Gutenberg Bible and gardens that inspired artists like Rauschenberg, or the @laarboretum, where peacocks still roam the same grounds that once played backdrop to a dozen Tarzan films, Fantasy Island, and Jurassic Park and more... our harvests might come with a little bit more than you expect šŸŠ

A side of LA you don’t always get to see, where abundance equals access, thanks to so many amazing volunteers harvesting citrus across the city and getting it out to our community. 🧔

Want to join us at a harvest? Comment ā€œvolunteerā€ and we’ll send you our calendar of volunteer events and help you sign you up for our Volunteer Newsletter so you can stay in the know! šŸ“…

Just want to know where we’re headed next? Comment ā€œeventsā€ and we’ll send you our upcoming harvest list.
__

ĀæSolo quieres saber a dónde iremos después? Comenta ā€œeventosā€ y te enviaremos nuestra lista de próximas cosechas. taken in Los Angeles, California by @foodforward
