Back on dry land!

Our studio is called Fool’s Gold for a reason. Pyrite (aka Fool’s Gold) earned the nickname for its resemblance to gold and its ability to be mistaken for something “valuable”. We’ve always been interested in the questions underneath it: where do we place value?

Spending time with Faythe Levine (@faythelevine) and her way of looking at the world keeps bringing us back to these questions.

A special thanks to Faythe for bringing us along during her time at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine this summer and for helping us see our work with fresh eyes. Read more about Faythe and Destabilizing as Practice with the link in our profile. 🤎

The Good Set has officially had a more adventurous summer than we have!

A few favorite stills from Faythe Levine’s time with our flatware in Deer Isle, Maine. There is something very satisfying about making an object, sending it out into the world, and seeing what kind of life it finds there.

The third in a series of short videos artist Faythe Levine (@faythelevine) made for Fool’s Gold this summer while playing around with the Good Set in the Atlantic Ocean.

We love finding our work in places we never could have imagined. It’s one of the best parts of collaborating with other artists.

Seeing something we’ve made through the mind of another artist opens new pathways in the studio for what we’re working on now and what we do in the future. Our work gets folded into their way of seeing and making, and something from that exchange inevitably comes back into ours. It keeps us from ever getting stuck on one thing, and keeps expanding what collaboration itself can look like.

We’ll tuck the moving lens of water in our back pocket, as a move to save for later. Grateful to Faythe for keeping our eyes moving in new and unexpected ways, always.

The Good Set went to Deer Isle, Maine, with artist Faythe Levine (@faythelevine) this summer, where she spent some time with it underwater.

Things got wobbly. Straight lines bent. Familiar shapes became unfamiliar. A form we’ve spent the last year looking at, adjusting, and getting just right shifted.

We find this type of distortion helpful. Faythe gave us a new way to look at something we thought we knew pretty well.

Our longtime pal Faythe Levine (@faythelevine) took the Good Set to Haystack Mountain School of Craft in Deer Isle, Maine, this summer and promptly dunked it in the Atlantic Ocean.

Our flatware goes for a swim! For the next in our series of collaborations with artists we love, the Good Set traveled 1,322 miles from our Milwaukee studio, dipped into 60-degree salt water, and hung out along a 371-million-year-old granite shoreline.

More tomorrow. Follow the link in our profile for more about Faythe Levine and Destabilizing as Practice.

We’ve been focusing a lot of our attention on the Good Set this past year. It’s been an exciting process figuring out how to scale the set while keeping as much of the making as possible centered in our Milwaukee studio.

As the sets have started finding their way into more homes, we’ve been playing around with packaging too.

One of our favorite things about building Fool’s Gold is that every new step seems to become an opportunity to pull people we love into the work. Our friend Nomka Enkhee (@pferdeautos) made these drawings for us, and now they’re becoming part of the Good Set packaging.

Nomka Enkhee (@pferdeautos) took a spin with our flatware collection, the Good Set, and developed a series of drawings for Fool’s Gold. We love her work and you will too! Expect to see some exciting collaborations in the coming months between Nomka and Fool’s Gold!

More on that soon! In the meantime, enjoy her dancing drawings! by @foolsgold.world

One last peek into artist Jonathan Sadler’s world at Echo Lake, California. Over the past several posts, we’ve been sharing his photographs of the Good Set on summer holiday in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

This collaboration is part of an ongoing series with artists we love. Our work has always been shaped by artists who inspire us, who help us see the world a little differently, and by the places that hold and keep us over time.

Thank you, Jonathan, for bringing the Good Set into a place that has shaped your own creative life, and for bringing us along with you. ❤️

This summer, the Good Set went on vacation with artist Jonathan Sadler to his cabin at Echo Lake, California.

Jonathan takes us into a place he’s been returning to year after year, one that has shaped his own creative practice.

People rarely appear in his photographs of Echo Lake. Yet, even when no one is in the frame, their presence is everywhere. We see this in the things they’ve made, repaired, kept, and cared for over time.

Every once in a while, that presence comes into view.

A small glimpse of life at Echo Lake, from a series Jonathan photographed for Fool’s Gold this summer.

Jonathan Sadler placed the Good Set on tabletops, boats, painted wood buildings, granite, and along the shoreline.

One of our favorite things about working with other artists is seeing where they take us. In his photographs, something we know intimately becomes unfamiliar again. Sadler helps us see our work with fresh eyes.

Jonathan Sadler has been photographing Echo Lake, CA, for more than a decade, returning to the same cabins, objects, landscapes, and familiar spaces year after year.

His photographs move between changing landscapes, intimate interiors, and subtle details. Over time, they have become a portrait of a place, but also of a life spent looking closely. Echo Lake has shaped how Sadler thinks and makes.

It’s a relationship to place and making that feels familiar to us. We love seeing our work find its way into his world.

Fool’s Gold is built through collaboration.

It happens in how objects are designed and made, but also in what happens once they leave our studio and enter someone else’s world.

For this series, we sent the Good Set along with Artist Jonathan Sadler on his latest stay at Echo Lake, CA and asked him to make photographs in whatever way felt natural to him.
