Today's listening.

Best albums of the 70s Nos. 1000, 999, 998

Didnt love the Keith Jarrett despite being a big fan of his work - the ECM style distracts from his gorgeous minimalist piano - but the Eloy's a treat. Ten Years After's not bad, either - some acid-fried heavy Blues Rock.

Any fans of any or all of the above?

Nurse With Wound - Soliloquy For Lilith

"They’re striking movements of awe, beauty and terror, but they’re more like a memorable rock formation glimpsed while gazing out the window on Saturn."

I wrote about Nurse With Wound's Soliloquy For Lilith, one of my favorite albums and one of the records responsible for getting me into drone music, for Spectrum Culture.

In 2023, I bought some cigar box instruments and the seller asked if I also wanted a dulcimer, because he said he had trouble keeping it in tune. I was with writer/musician/philosopher Jason Simpson @for3stpunk at the time and he nodded, suggesting I buy the instrument. Later he said that an out-of-tune dulcimer = instant horror movie soundtrack, so in this reel, I'm going to test that theory... 🙂

I use 5 methods for playing the dulcimer and I'm running it through a Death by Audio @deathbyaudio Dream Station for added sonic goodness.

What do you think? Is Jason's theory correct? (I'd say it is!)

My Bloody Valentine Q&A

Such a treat to get to see @necromandrea, one of the people that got me into horror studies in the first place, do an almost HOUR-LONG q&a with horror legend George Mihalka about My Bloody Valentine in honor of its 45th Anniversary to close out night 2 of @portlandhorror at the @hollywoodtheatr.

We are truly blessed to have such a world-class event in our backyard.

This week's charts:

Published an essay about Tim Hecker's Harmony in Ultraviolet, celebrating its 20th Anniversary. I quoted Baudrillard's The Ecstasy of Communication, where he talks about the collapse of the automobile from a tool of genuine exploration into a space capsule, constantly connected to the mainframe, leaving us all - metaphorically - like Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Not even an i but just an eye, staring unblinking into the void of sponsored images and psychological programming until the end of infinity. It's like being strapped to a dentist's chair in Plato's Cave. We've got to break out!

I am also happy to report my Becoming an Expert system is in place. First, i created a database of roughly 20,000-ish albums that are considered the best albums ever made, along with @ 20,000 books, 26,000 movies, 1001 paintings, and 1001 buildings. The premise is to check out things that are considered 'the best', to see what they are, what they have to say, and whether or not they hold up. Postmodernism has engendered a mistrust and a dismissal of The Western Canon, due to official systems excluding marginalized voices throughout history - much to the dismay of cranks like Howard Bloom. That leaves those of us who appreciate classic art at a loss, which has left many to just let the markets make the decisions. I disagree. We can have "high" and "low" art. The projects springing from this system will address that. Stay tuned.

Summer of Horror is nearly upon us! Beginning with Tropical Horror/Tropical Gothic, thus all the exotica. Stay tuned for that, also, and share some of yr favorite tropical or jungle horror novels and films, exotica, or soundtracks, in the comments!

Les Joyaux de la Princesse - Exposition Internationale Paris 1937

Dark Ambient Classics 22/5000

The Brightest Lights Cast the Deepest Shadows.

Les Joyaux de la Princesse's fourth LP delves into a pivotal moment in 20th Century history, when all of the nations of the world were putting forward their vision of the future. This included Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, as the authoritarian states sought to win over the hearts and minds of the world with their monolithic architecture and utopian visions.

We all know how that turned out. It's a reminder to remain skeptical of the social engineers and visionaries attempting to control the fate of humanity from their ivory towers - a fact that remains just as relevant in 2026 as it did in 1937.
