Micro Genre Music is growing every day. With that growth comes more work and more time needed to give every album the attention it deserves. We already have a slew of dedicated writers contributing to the site, and I want to personally thank all of them for the time, work, and care they’ve put into Micro Genre Music over the past 3 years. But there are only so many hours in a day, and we need more reviewers to help us keep up.

If you’re interested in writing with us, please DM me. And feel free to share this with anyone you think might be interested in being part of the project.

Thank you!

In 2023, I bought some cigar box instruments and the seller asked if I also wanted a dulcimer, because he said he had trouble keeping it in tune. I was with writer/musician/philosopher Jason Simpson @for3stpunk at the time and he nodded, suggesting I buy the instrument. Later he said that an out-of-tune dulcimer = instant horror movie soundtrack, so in this reel, I'm going to test that theory... 🙂

I use 5 methods for playing the dulcimer and I'm running it through a Death by Audio @deathbyaudio Dream Station for added sonic goodness.

What do you think? Is Jason's theory correct? (I'd say it is!)

It’s December! IT’S LIST SEASON! I collaborated with fellow PopMatters writer J Simpson and we put together a list of our favorite experimental albums of 2025. There was SO MUCH good stuff in that genre this year, so we had to leave out a lot of worthy records, but here’s 20 to get you started. Link in bio.

The people behind Micro Genre Music all come from different corners of the electronic world. They write because they care about the music, the community, the scenes and the artists shaping them.
