Matsutake mushroom hunting near Packwood 🍄

Forage Seattle's Matsutake Madness is a four-hour guided foraging tour where you'll learn to search for matsutake mushrooms and take your harvest home. Snacks, coffee, and tea are included.

Tours by @forageseattle start at $239 per person. The outing is rated hard, so expect a physical challenge. An SUV, AWD vehicle, or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended for reaching the site.

The next available dates are October 17 and 31, and only a few spots remain for the season.

Traveling to Packwood for the hunt? Stay the night before to skip the early morning drive, then book a second night so you can rest after four hours in the forest.

Our guide Ben was such a fun-gi (couldn’t help myself with the mushroom pun) and this foraging walk with @forageseattle ended up being way more than “find mushrooms, take pic.”

Responsible foraging teaches patience, presence, perseverance… and a little luck, because the forest is doing a symbiotic balancing act with climate, soil, and everything alive under our feet.

We learned SO much about mushrooms and symbiotic relationships with the forest, why you should never trust a “vibe-based ID,” and yes, there was a reishi tea break that made me feel like a hydrated woodland creature. Tips to remember on a forage:

• ID checklist: habitat + environment • key characteristics • smell (when in doubt, throw it out - don't eat it!)

• Taste test = tiny nibble + spit (only when guide says it’s safe)

Gentle reminder:

• After heavy rains: go extra gentle—soil + mycelium are fragile

• Minimize repeat visits to the same spot

• Stay on trail when possible; if off-trail, stick to durable forest areas

@rei hosted me and a few other creators for what turned into some of the best few days I’ve had in the PNW.

From alpine lake hikes and new product field testing to mushroom foraging and getting to connect with some truly inspiring creators, I won’t be forgetting this one for a while.

Consider this the Pacific Northwest’s version of a treasure hunt! 🍄🌲

In this episode of The Vue, Visit Bellevue ambassadors @lovetwb venture into Washington’s forests with Forage Seattle for a wild culinary adventure: mushroom foraging!

With an expert guide leading the way, Marlie and Anthony explore lush forests and carpets of emerald moss in search of one of the PNW’s most delicious treasures, wild chanterelle mushrooms. Along the hunt, there’s also the possibility of discovering other edible varieties, including lobster, coral, and cauliflower mushrooms. 🍄

Forage Seattle pre-scouts locations and provides the foraging supplies needed for the adventure, making the experience approachable for first-time mushroom hunters while still offering plenty of excitement for seasoned foragers. Now I’ll be honest… I’m not the biggest mushroom fan but with so much information being shared more and more about their health attributes - they’re something I’ve wanted to learn more about!

So when we stumbled upon Angela’s Chef Lead Mushroom Foraging and Cooking Class… we immediately signed up! @forageseattle

Not only did we learn tips and tricks about foraging… the cooking lesson incorporated was incredible!

& now… I can say that I am SO excited to continue experimenting with mushrooms & incorporating more into our diets!

We have now taken two classes with Forage Seattle & will be looking forward to our next! 🍂🍁
