Matsutake mushroom hunting near Packwood 🍄

Forage Seattle's Matsutake Madness is a four-hour guided foraging tour where you'll learn to search for matsutake mushrooms and take your harvest home. Snacks, coffee, and tea are included.

Tours by @forageseattle start at $239 per person. The outing is rated hard, so expect a physical challenge. An SUV, AWD vehicle, or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended for reaching the site.

The next available dates are October 17 and 31, and only a few spots remain for the season.

Traveling to Packwood for the hunt? Stay the night before to skip the early morning drive, then book a second night so you can rest after four hours in the forest.

Comment MATSUTAKE and we'll send you the link to check dates, pricing, and details.

Our guide Ben was such a fun-gi (couldn’t help myself with the mushroom pun) and this foraging walk with @forageseattle ended up being way more than “find mushrooms, take pic.”

Responsible foraging teaches patience, presence, perseverance… and a little luck, because the forest is doing a symbiotic balancing act with climate, soil, and everything alive under our feet.

We learned SO much about mushrooms and symbiotic relationships with the forest, why you should never trust a “vibe-based ID,” and yes, there was a reishi tea break that made me feel like a hydrated woodland creature. Tips to remember on a forage:

• ID checklist: habitat + environment • key characteristics • smell (when in doubt, throw it out - don't eat it!)

• Taste test = tiny nibble + spit (only when guide says it’s safe)

Gentle reminder:

• After heavy rains: go extra gentle—soil + mycelium are fragile

• Minimize repeat visits to the same spot

• Stay on trail when possible; if off-trail, stick to durable forest areas

If you’ve been curious about mushroom foraging, do it the right way: with a guide, with respect, and with zero shortcuts. If you find yourself in Seattle, don’t miss your opportunity to go foraging with @forageseattle.

@rei hosted me and a few other creators for what turned into some of the best few days I’ve had in the PNW.

From alpine lake hikes and new product field testing to mushroom foraging and getting to connect with some truly inspiring creators, I won’t be forgetting this one for a while.

Huge thanks to @camp.yoshi , @forageseattle, @azionepr, Whitney, Lauren, the amazingly talented crew at the REI creative hub, and all the other creators who made this trip so special. 🍄🌲

We’ve partnered with Forage Seattle for years, and we finally got the chance to join them on a chanterelle hunt ourselves—and we hit the jackpot! 🍄

There were beautiful white and golden chanterelles everywhere. Our guide (and owner of Forage Seattle), Angela, was fun, incredibly knowledgeable, and communicative throughout the entire experience. We felt completely comfortable wandering and hunting on our own, foraging bags in hand, while still having her expertise nearby.

One of the best parts? The hunt was so close to Packwood that afterward we were back at the hotel in no time—straight to the hot tub, followed by a shower and dinner in town. Pretty perfect fall day, if you ask us.

And the chanterelles kept giving! I’ve already made so many delicious meals with what we brought home.

🍄 Staying with us + going foraging? When you book a Crazy for Chanterelles Hunt or Matsutake Madness Hunt with Forage Seattle, you’ll receive a discount code directly from Forage Seattle for 15% off your stay at Historic Hotel Packwood.

Come hunt mushrooms, soak in the hot tub, and make a fall weekend of it. 🍂
