The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the United States (AFPC-USA) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our colleague Daniele Compatangelo @daniele_compantangelo , a respected Italian journalist and White House correspondent.

Daniele dedicated his career to informing audiences with accuracy, determination, and enthusiasm. Through his reporting for La7 and other Italian media organizations, he brought important developments from Washington and the White House to viewers in Italy and beyond. He was also the founder and president of the White House Foreign Media Group, reflecting his commitment to strengthening the community of international correspondents covering the United States.

Only a few days before his passing, the AFPC-USA had informed Daniele that he had been selected to receive a Prize of Excellence at the 2026 Foreign Press Awards, taking place on December 3 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Daniele enthusiastically accepted the honor, which recognized his outstanding reporting and contributions to journalism.

We are heartbroken that he will not be with us to receive this recognition in person. The AFPC-USA intends to present the Prize of Excellence in his memory during the gala and to provide an opportunity for his colleagues to say a few words honoring his life, his work, and his contribution to the international press community.

On behalf of the Association’s Board of Directors, leadership, and the broader community of foreign correspondents in the United States, we extend our deepest condolences to Daniele’s family, friends, and colleagues.

His voice, professionalism, and dedication to journalism will be greatly missed.

May his memory be eternal.

The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the United States (AFPC-USA) is deeply alarmed by the Trump administration’s new rules that will drastically shorten the duration of visas for foreign journalists. We have previously called on the Department of Homeland Security to reverse this deeply flagrant attack on press freedom.

Under the new rules, foreign journalists on I-visas will be allowed to report from the United States for just 240 days. Any extension beyond that period will be granted solely at the discretion of the US government, creating a chilling effect and the risk that journalists will face retaliation for any coverage deemed unfavorable. The visa duration is even shorter for Chinese journalists, capped initially at 90 days.

The new rules are set to take effect on September 15. AFPC-USA is now calling on members of Congress to stop the damaging new measures from going into force. They can introduce a joint resolution of disapproval or apply direct pressure on the DHS. If the new restrictions are allowed to go into force, the Trump administration will have dealt a body blow to America’s standing as a global bastion of free speech.

This week, the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA welcomed Lisa Monaco, President of Microsoft Global Affairs, for an off-the-record roundtable luncheon with international correspondents at the University Club in New York. It was a privilege to meet her and have such an engaging conversation.

The educational discussion explored cybersecurity, emerging risks in the age of AI, and the importance of cooperation between governments and the private sector in protecting essential services and strengthening resilience.

Our sincere thanks to Lisa Monaco for sharing her time and insights, and to the correspondents who joined us for this thoughtful exchange.

A special thank-you to our Executive Board member, Mitzi Perdue, for making this wonderful space available for our weekly roundtable discussions and for her continued support of our foreign press community.

Transparency in Global Trade: How can journalists scrutinize trade policies when key information is incomplete or unavailable?

Join the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA (AFPC-USA), in partnership with the Hinrich Foundation, for a virtual educational discussion with María L. Pagán, Senior Research Fellow at the Hinrich Foundation, former Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, and former U.S. Ambassador to the World Trade Organization.

We’ll explore how transparency, industrial subsidies, and gaps in government reporting shape global trade—and what these issues mean for international correspondents covering economic policy.

Gain insights to ask informed questions, assess government statements, and explain complex trade issues to your audiences.

Reporting from Washington for a global audience is about more than following the White House or the latest political debate. Foreign correspondents must explain how American power actually works—and why decisions made in Washington matter far beyond the United States.

That means translating a complex political system involving the presidency, Congress, the courts, federal agencies, and state governments, while identifying which developments have real international consequences. Decisions on trade, security, technology, migration, energy, and foreign policy can directly affect countries and communities around the world.

Strong Washington reporting also requires context, independence, and perspective. Correspondents must look beyond political messaging and the Washington bubble to explain how American society, elections, and institutions shape U.S. policy and its global impact.

How does the United States look when viewed through the eyes of journalists reporting for the rest of the world? šŸŒŽšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Thousands of foreign correspondents based across the United States report every day for audiences far beyond American borders. Their job is not simply to describe what happened, but to explain why it matters internationally—and to translate the political, cultural, economic, and social realities of the United States for people whose experiences and institutions may be very different.

American elections, Supreme Court decisions, trade policies, technology regulation, immigration debates, and foreign-policy choices can have consequences across continents. At the same time, stories that dominate the U.S. news cycle may not always be the stories that international audiences consider most important. Foreign correspondents therefore constantly decide which developments have genuine global significance and what context their audiences need to understand them.

Their perspective also extends far beyond Washington. Understanding America means reporting from its cities, rural communities, industrial regions, borders, universities, businesses, and cultural centers—and recognizing that a country of more than 300 million people cannot be reduced to a single political or cultural identity.

Foreign correspondents also play an important role in challenging stereotypes. America can appear familiar around the world through Hollywood, technology, music, universities, social media, and global brands, yet that familiarity can hide the country’s complexity and contradictions. Strong international reporting helps audiences see beyond simplified narratives.

At their best, foreign correspondents serve as bridges between societies. They explain America to the world while bringing international perspectives into the way American developments are understood. Their unique position—both inside the country they cover and connected to audiences outside it—allows them to see America from both directions.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the work of foreign correspondents—from translating interviews and transcribing recordings to analyzing large datasets and navigating complex documents across languages.

But greater speed also brings new challenges. Deepfakes, synthetic media, AI-generated misinformation and inaccurate translations are making verification, transparency and editorial judgment more important than ever.

AI can help journalists process, organize and analyze information, but it cannot replace the cultural understanding, relationships with sources, skepticism and human judgment at the heart of international reporting.

Read more on ForeignPress.org about how AI is transforming foreign correspondence—and why the correspondent remains essential in an AI-driven media landscape.

The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the United States (AFPC-USA) has issued a statement following the Trump administration’s restriction of I-visas, a move with significant ramifications for the foreign journalist community:

Ā«AFPC-USA is deeply alarmed by the Trump administration’s new rules that will drastically shorten the duration of visas for foreign journalists.

This alarming assault on press freedom appears designed to reduce scrutiny of the US government by undermining the ability of a free press to hold those in power to account.

Under the new rules, foreign journalists on I-visas will be allowed to report from the United States for only 240 days. Any extension beyond that period will be granted solely at the discretion of the US government, creating a real risk that journalists could face retaliation for coverage an administration finds unfavorable.

The cost of repeatedly relocating foreign correspondents for such short assignments will be prohibitive for many news organizations, limiting international reporting from the US and diminishing the world’s access to diverse coverage of America.

AFPC-USA calls on the Department of Homeland Security to reverse this deeply flagrant attack on press freedom.Ā»

Can the U.S. and China rebuild trust?

In a new Foreign Press Podcast conversation, Merle Hinrich, Chair and Founder of the Hinrich Foundation, discusses why the U.S.-China relationship is under growing pressure — from trade tensions and industrial policy to rare earth export controls, protectionism, and geopolitical competition.

The key takeaway: rebuilding trust will not happen quickly. It will require small steps, limited areas of cooperation, and a stronger multilateral framework to manage an increasingly fragmented global trading system.

For foreign correspondents covering trade, diplomacy, supply chains, and globalization, this conversation offers important insights into one of the world’s most consequential relationships.

Read the full learning takeaways at ForeignPress.org.

U.S. midterm elections are not only domestic political contests. They shape the balance of power in Washington and can influence America’s role in the world.

From foreign policy, military aid, trade, sanctions, immigration, climate action, and technology regulation to the strength of democratic institutions, the results of congressional elections can have consequences far beyond U.S. borders.

For foreign correspondents, the midterms are a reminder that global stories often begin locally — in congressional districts, Senate races, and state campaigns whose outcomes can affect allies, markets, governments, and citizens around the world.

The midterms may take place inside the United States, but their impact does not stop at America’s borders.

On July 4, 2026, the United States marks a milestone of rare historic significance: the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. For Americans, Independence Day has always been more than a national holiday. It is a civic ritual, a moment of celebration, remembrance, debate, and renewal. For foreign correspondents covering the United States, this anniversary offers something equally important: an opportunity to examine America not only as a country, but as an unfinished democratic experiment whose meaning continues to evolve.

The United States is not easy to cover because it cannot be reduced to one narrative. It is a country of extraordinary innovation and deep inequality, immense opportunity and persistent anxiety, global leadership and internal polarization. It is a nation where patriotism can mean celebration, protest, military service, civic activism, religious faith, artistic expression, or a demand for accountability. The task of the foreign correspondent is to capture these complexities with accuracy, independence, and context.

This anniversary also reminds us of the essential role of journalism in democratic life. The American constitutional tradition places a special value on a free press, not because journalism is always perfect, but because democracy cannot function without scrutiny, transparency, and informed public debate. For international journalists working in the United States, the responsibility is even broader. They explain America to the world, but they also explain the world to America. Their reporting helps international audiences understand not only what happens in the United States, but why it matters.
