On 9/11 2001, half a million people were evacuated from Manhattan by boat. The rescue mission has been compared to the evacuation at Dunkirk, yet few people have heard about it.

For one captain, it was deeply personal. His ‘son’ Jake was on the 105th floor of the north tower.

For 20 years, the crew didn’t share much of what happened that day. Today, several of them have lost their lives to cancer.

I really hope you’ll give me a minute to tell their story.

There is so much great journalism being made every day.

Inspired by one of the best in our field @clarissawardcnn and her ‘tea & journalism’, I wanna share some stories I’ve come across lately - and the reporters behind them.

And today, it felt only right to end with Gloria Steinem ✊🏽

After freelancing myself, I know how much work happens before anyone ever reads a story: research, sources, pitches, visas, fixers, translators, travel, and sometimes for very little money once all the expenses are paid.

So why do it? Because we have one of the best jobs in the world, meeting the people at the heart of the stories.

Do you know any great reporters or media I should be following? I’d love to hear from you :)

I also spent my teenage years working as a nanny, selling hotdogs at a football stadium and 7-Eleven, working at a café and helping out at a nursing home. All of those jobs were important to me in their own way, but maybe I’ll save all the hotdog slides for another day 🌭

For those of us reporting from the U.S., the ground is shifting beneath our feet.

Earlier this week, I was on @gotv2dk and @drnyheder to discuss the Trump administration’s decision to tighten visa rules for foreign journalists.

From September, the administration will begin “screening, vetting and monitoring” foreign journalists, and our visas will be shortened from four or five years to just 240 days. Officially, the changes are intended to strengthen security and prevent fraud. Press freedom groups, however, warn that this is “an alarming assault on press freedom.”

Both hosts asked whether I had any doubts about speaking publicly about it. The honest answer is yes.

As I said on air, though, the administration’s decision doesn’t come as a surprise. Trump tried to introduce similar restrictions during his first term before it was reversed by the Biden administration. Since returning to office, his administration has also sued, pressured and attacked media organizations, journalists and comedians.

On Friday, Trump publicly attacked CNN’s @kaitlancollins during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. And during the 2024 presidential campaign, I watched Trump applaud a man who has attempted to physically attack members of the press at a rally in Pennsylvania, saying, “that’s beautiful. That’s all right. He’s on our side” (see video on the last slide).

In August 2025, I was the only journalist from the #middleeast and #northafrica region selected by the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Press Center @foreignpressusa and US Embassy in the UAE @usainuae for a reporting tour on Foreign Direct Investment across the states of #mississippi and #arizona

Where Interviewed:

Governor Tate Reeves

House Speaker Jason White

Senator Daniel Sparks

State Senator Briggs Hopson

and touring @lucidmotors and @nissan on the ground.

A year later, the numbers do the talking: the #UAE is executing on its $1.4 trillion, 10-year U.S. investment pledge, with over $100 billion in deals already delivered since last year’s visit, and UAE-U.S. trade just hit a record $39 billion. The FDI bridge between the Gulf and the American heartland isn’t slowing down.
Proud covered this from the ground floor.

The benefits and challenges of independent journalism. I had a great conversation with Mallary Tenore Tarpley for the “Foreign Press Podcast” @foreignpressusa discussing the opportunities, responsibilities and realities of independent journalism in today’s media landscape.
