I haven’t shared anything in awhile, I’ve been sitting on lots of footage but haven’t had the time to edit videos. So until I get around to that, here’s a personal project I finished at the end of May.

I bought this used Squier Starcaster for my birthday, feeling it was the perfect guitar to try out the @kinggizzard microtonal fret scheme. The fretwork for adding 33 stainless steel frets was very involved, but very satisfying in the end. Now the challenge is wrapping my head around playing it!

The final form of the aluminum neck Jazzmaster. This has transformed into something truly beastly.

The electronics got a major upgrade with a complete EMG pre-loaded pickguard. The active single coil pickups are noiseless, and also offer control over different EQ contours and a 20dB boost, making this baritone much better suited for heavy music, but still retaining its special Jazzmaster character.

The battery box installation went smoothly. I needed to rout a cavity, countersink screw holes for the pressed-metal design, and drill a hole for the wires. I also soldered wire extensions for the battery to help with access.

Final aesthetic touches are the new volume and tone knobs, and the engraved neck plate.

Part two of the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster mod series for Simon. After highlighting the @electricalguitarcompany neck in the last video, I wanted to go over the hardware upgrades.

I installed a gold @graphtechguitarlabs tune-o-matic bridge. This was slightly wider than the stock bridge, so I had to relocate the bridge studs. I made plugs from walnut to fill the original holes, then drilled new ones. The Graph Tech saddles work great with the tremolo, with excellent tuning stabitility.

I also replaced the stock tremolo with a @descendantvibrato trem. This unique design holds the ball end of the string much lower, increasing the break angle across the bridge. It is very well machined, making for a very smooth tremolo action.

This Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster proved to be a great base for major customization. The @electricalguitarcompany 27.78” scale aluminum baritone neck is a behemoth. Just solid metal and no truss rod, the neck is perfectly flat and stable.

Aluminum has unique challenges. My previous experience building aluminum prop lightsabers came in handy, with preserving the brushed finish and cutting threads for machine screws.

Not featured in this video are the @descendantvibrato tremolo and @graphtechguitarlabs bridge. More to come on those later, as well as some additional upgrades coming down the line.

Here’s the process behind the full fingerboard replacement for James of @coldstars_band and @chiral_decay

After first removing the original rosewood fretboard, the Richlite blank was thicknessed, tapered, and secured to the neck with registration pins. This kept everything in precise alignment throughout the build.

Cutting the partial fretlines was an unorthodox challenge to get them perfectly straight. It took a few experiments to find a reliable method for making all 43 cuts. Brass and black inlays were then glued in place, followed by sanding to a 16” radius.

After gluing the fingerboard to the neck, the edges of the neck finish needed to be sanded back to blend the two together. To make everything seamless, the entire neck finish was then sanded off and refinished with TruOil, with nice satin results.

The fingerboard then received its final sanding and polishing, bringing the brass to a bright shine. With finishing complete, all that was left was assembly and final setup.

This is the first significant custom project I’ve taken on at Forencich Guitars. It was a pleasure to follow James’ vision for this guitar to fruition. I love collaboration; it’s exciting to build to someone else’s tastes and discover in the process something I wouldn’t have found on my own.

As a member of the niche fretless guitar community, I hope I can usher in new players by providing well playing instruments. I’d be excited to do more fretless conversions, or whatever other wild ideas you can think of!

Absolutely thrilled to finally have this Ibanez S7420 fretless conversion finished. @eiffeltravis AKA @forencichguitars did a stunning job on the custom @richlitefretboard fingerboard, working with me for months to get it just right.

It was no easy feat to wrangle this fairly unusual material, which is made of densely layered recycled paper, but the end result speaks for itself. I came up with the idea for the minimal double helix line pattern, but Travis elevated the design, suggesting the beautiful brass inlays and side dots we ended up with.

You’ll be seeing this in some clips and hearing it in some songs for both @coldstars_band and @chiral_decay soon!
