My collage series photo/copy/archive are now display at the Odeon as part of @impulstanz_festival
On display one hour before each performance at the Odeon till August 10th.

To Christopher Matthews, who never had the classically muscular dancer’s body, Broadway star Ann Reinking once said: “Chris, you are not cut from the same cookie cutter as most dancers.” For Photo/Copy/Archive, the artist looked at 80 years of performance posters from Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and cookie-cut these “most dancers” Reinking was talking about out of them, segmenting and reassembling the pieces into wholly different creatures. The result is a personal, alternative archive playfully questioning our notions of the marketable and the dancing body.

Leeds Corn Exchange, Call Lane, LS1 7BR  @lightnightleeds   Enter a world of movement, light and queer nightlife created by final-year students @nscd_ba3 from Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Working with artists Christopher Matthews and Joseph Mercier @mercier_joseph , the performers respond to Matthews’ installation Field of Dreams, a constellation of rotating disco lights that transforms the space for gathering and dancing. Field of Dreams Remix explores the joy, freedom and collective imagination found within club culture, alongside the grief felt when these vital spaces disappear. Energetic and reflective, the work celebrates the communities built beneath the lights.

Action! A truck rumbles past with music blaring. A dancer leaps and stumbles, their body moving forward against forces that refuse to let up. Then suddenly the elements erupt: thunder rolls, wind lashes and snow falls in this immersive theatre experience which transforms an everyday street into a live film set.
This “gloriously inventive” (The Theatre Times) event has already thrilled audiences in Sydney, Santiago and Buenos Aires. Now it’s time for Greenwich Peninsula to play a starring role.

I am leaving @impulstanz_festival feeling incredibly invigorated by the beautiful experiences and especially working with my second cohort of the Atlas programme. It is a privilege to mentor such gorgeous artist. Engage in practise, critical thinking and expanded ways of choreography. But more importantly we practise care, something the world locally and globally could use. To see care as first response is overwhelming. We took care of each other and our practises. We prioritised joy and actively looked to see joy in the world around us. Bringing joy in to our lives as a political act. I am full and my heart has grown even bigger because of these beautiful humans.

I have been spending the weekend getting to know my new Atlas cohort through dialogues, presentations, lunches, bike rides and summer bangers! I am excited for the next four weeks as we dive into their work, thoughts and artistic voices. It is a pleasure and a gift to be working at @bearsinthe.park as it has such a rich history of supporting independent makers!

For those who don’t know what Atlas is m, here’s a little brief from the Impulstanz website:

ATLAS – create your dance trails is a modular training programme in the scope of ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival. It offers both artists with first choreographic experience and artists in the middle of their career, including from other disciplines, a dynamic environment for their artistic development. The programme aims to meet two of their central needs: first, to have access to studio space to do research and work on pieces, and second, to receive new input through individual training programmes, by watching international productions and by exchanging ideas with artists from more than 100 countries, as well as through peer-to-peer exchanges among the ATLAS groups.

Dramaturgical advice is provided by coaches supervising the participants’ work during the course of the programme. In 2026, these are artist, dramaturge and pedagogue Angélique Willkie and choreographer, performer, visual artist and curator Christopher Matthews. Applicants for ATLAS 2026 have the opportunity to choose between the two coaches.

So You Think You Can Dance is coming to an end but it is leaving behind a legacy. The show changed so many dancers lives and not just the ones who made it to the Top 20. Being on the show did so much for me personally and professionally. Things started to fall in place and others doors started to open in the commercial world. Vegas week was incredible!

Also, I used to have soooooooo much hair!

Funny story: When the Vegas week episode aired, I had to cover a shift in a restaurant I was working in at the time. The manager agreed to play SYTYCD on the tv if I did the shift. I was taking an order at a table when I come on the screen and I just screamed. After I explained the table was less freaked out!

I got an ACE grant. Totally over the moon about it!

Research and development for ADHD-led choreographic publishing

This R&D project explores how a physical publication can function as a choreographic object - an extension of movement-thinking, and a tactile companion to live performance work. How can a publication be a dance, and a dance be a publication? Centering my ADHD, I’ll develop neurodivergent-led writing and design methods that treat my thinking style as a creative asset rather than an obstacle. With collaborators, I will explore and test materials, formats and processes, resulting in early-stage prototypes and a methodology for ADHD-led choreographic publishing.
