Island 17 is a three-storey terrace house in Taman Lucky, Kuala Lumpur, rebuilt as an artist residency and private gallery. Designed by formzero, the project reinterprets the spatial qualities of Ipoh’s limestone caves, the owner’s hometown, through thick curved walls, compressed circulation and carefully controlled natural light. A double-height gallery forms the heart of the house, illuminated by indirect skylights and sculpted into an organic interior. Rough stucco surfaces and shifting daylight create a constantly changing atmosphere, while pockets of wild vegetation around the house echo plants growing between limestone formations.

CANOPY House

"...Canopy House is a 1.5-storey bungalow nestled at the edge of a forest reserve, defined by a sloping roof that wraps around existing trees and follows the natural terrain. Covering 174 sqm on an 870 sqm site, Canopy House preserves 80 percent of the land as open ground, retaining most trees. Two private rooms anchor the daily life of a small artist family, while the transparent living space and art studio open fully to the forest. Exposed CMU walls operate as structural galleries for artwork, hosting creativity and gatherings. Canopy House exemplifies architecture harmoniously integrated with nature..."

Red Hill Gallery by FORMZERO, MOA Architects

-----

Red Hill Gallery was conceived not only as an exhibition space, but also as an experience of exploring the landscape. Located on the edge of a tropical town, the project responds to a site undergoing rapid transformation as agricultural land gradually gives way to residential development.

Malaysia Pavilion Concept, Osaka World Expo 2025

We asked ourselves, what makes a 3D visual feel like a distant memory?

To make the pavilion believable, we focused on capturing POV moments that felt observed rather than staged.

Designed by Formzero, the Malaysia Pavilion was envisioned as a Vessel of Diversity, carrying Malaysia’s nature, culture and future to Japan.

Water, tropical landscape and a woven batik-inspired façade subtly expressed a Malaysian identity.

Using cultural contrast and tangible objects as storytelling strategy, we curated a set of 3D visuals featuring:
1. An Iban dancer performing in front of curious Japanese visitors in kimono
2. A group of kindergarteners excitedly discovering a mysterious tropical pavilion.
3. Real objects like a thank you postcard for visitor and an architecture model.
4. An imagined construction progress in a winterly Osaka in February, rushing for April's launch.

The captured moments bridge between concept design and believability. Fog, water, movement and human presence were used to soften the “3D rendered” feeling, making the visuals feel real.

Project: Malaysia Pavilion
Location: Osaka, Japan
Architect: Formzero
Curator: Memories Entertainment
A proposal for Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI)
Year: 2023
Scope: Visualisation, Video Walkthrough
