Panta Rei (everything flows)
@laurabmays
2023
Madrone, camphor
250 x 420 x 140mm

This cabinet is a part of an ongoing exploration of a more shaped and sensuous approach to woodworking, though within the archetype of a simple and solid wood Krenovian cabinet. The wood is a richer red than average madrone, and the flatsawn center of a board was used for the door to accentuate the “drip.” The intention behind the form is to evoke a multitude of other materials and objects, from molten magma to blood.

Laura Mays is a woodworker, craftsperson, parent, and educator, who has lived and worked in Northern California since 2011. Her work sits in the overlapping fields of craft, design, and art. Her work begins in the material, in wood, and a deep respect for it as an emanation of our planet. She also has a great deal of respect for the thousands of years for which wood has been used. Indeed, it has been central to our development as humans. She uses archetypes or ‘patterns’ from the past, whilst avoiding nostalgia or pastiche.

Originally from Wicklow, she has a degree in architecture from University College Dublin and a Higher Certificate in Furniture Design and Manufacture from GMIT Letterfrack (now Atlantic Technical University), which she followed with two years on the Fine Woodworking program in College of the Redwoods in California. She completed an MA in Industrial Design (subject: Craft, meaning and value) at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin in 2010.

She was a lecturer in Furniture Design and Manufacture at GMIT Letterfrack from 2004 to 2011. Since 2011, she has been the Program Director of the Fine Woodworking program at The Krenov School (formerly College of the Redwoods) in Northern California. She is the founding President of The Krenov Foundation, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to support the craft of fine woodworking in Northern California, by conducting educational programs and providing material and financial support to individuals and institutions in that field. by @fortgallery_

@memento_mori_stonework Dominic Keogh
Kilkenny Limestone silver and gold leaf paint
290 x 170 x 30 mm

Dominic Keogh is a multidisciplinary stonemason and conservation worker. He specialises in traditional stonemasonry, letter cutting, monumental masonry, traditional lime mortars, craft training, and the conservation and restoration of vernacular structures. A passion and curiosity to understand the landscape and history of his home in Kilmovee, County Mayo first drew Dominic to the network of dry stone walls and traditional stone buildings that crisscross the area, and the stories and skills associated with their construction. With guidance from the older people in the area, Dominic began learning the skills involved in dry stone walling, starting on a path of discovery that he still walks over twenty years later. In that time, Dominic has travelled the length and breadth of Ireland to seek out and learn from other skilled craftspeople, expanding his own skill set to include architectural conservation, He has worked on a wide variety of projects both at home and abroad.

Dominic’s passion for researching vernacular Irish architecture, folk history, and culture is a driving force behind his work, and he constantly strives to combine traditional skills and methods with the best of modern practice and standards to achieve sensitive and skilful results. Alongside the construction and carving aspects of his craft, Dominic is an experienced craft trainer who uses his wealth of knowledge to inspire other people to begin their own journey of stonework. Dominic’s dedication to promoting his craft, and passing on knowledge is a vital part of his work.

A new home for two pieces from Ireland’s most celebrated craftswomen @___omos
Róisín de Buitléar @roisindebuitlear – Fire Lantern
Deirdre McLoughlin @deirdre.mcloughlin – Beastie II

Pieces that have made their way from Sunday Salons into Ómós, a newly opened intimate guesthouse and restaurant in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, founded by @cuangreene and opened by such an incredible team!

Ómós is a celebration of people, produce, nature and craft. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that craft, amongst the rest, has been and is continuing to be respected, documented and valued in this incredible project.

Photography: @shantanustarick

Deirdre McLoughlin discovered the freedom of clay in 1972, finding expression in the studio of Rosemary Andrews. She honed her skills over several years studying in Japan. Acknowledging her ancestors — weavers, sculptors, and lacemakers — she feels a deep connection to tradition. Deirdre currently works from her studio in Xpositron, Amsterdam, creating non-representational forms that defy expectation.

Róisín de Buitléar is a multidisciplinary artist whose poetic works explore culture through glass, language, light, and sound. Her art is held in public collections globally, including in Ireland, Japan, and the USA. An inaugural artist-in-residence at the National Museum of Ireland and a Bonhams prize winner, she is committed to art as a catalyst for social and environmental change.

The Sunday Salon series is a set of small, hosted gatherings designed to create a focused, lived-in cultural moment. They’re about welcoming people into a space where the ease and warmth of Irish hospitality sit at the centre of everything. The salon series is curated alongside artist and curator Róisín de Buitléar.

Each salon is shaped around its setting, giving every one its own distinct feel and experience. So far, they’ve taken place in private homes — beautiful examples of Irish architecture — where the everyday texture of family life sits comfortably alongside art.

Across the series, we bring together fine art and fine craft from Ireland-based artists and the wider diaspora, all within the home of a patron. This kind of pairing doesn’t happen all that of by @fortgallery_

Marcus O’Mahony @omahony_marcus

A distinguished Irish ceramicist based in Glencairn, Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland, Marcus O’Mahony has cultivated a profound and tactile body of work that bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. His practice is deeply rooted in the Leach/ Hamada tradition, emphasising the expressive potential of clay and the serendipitous beauty of wood and salt firing techniques. O’Mahony’s ceramics are primarily wheel-thrown, often altered post-throwing through cutting, faceting, and squaring to enhance their form and surface. He utilises stoneware and porcelain clays, aiming to reveal the inherent qualities of the material. His pieces are wood-fired in an Anagama kiln and occasionally in a salt-glaze kiln, processes that imbue the works with rich textures and naturalistic finishes. The influence of his rural surroundings in west Waterford is evident in the organic forms and earthy tones of his ceramics. Beyond his studio practice, O’Mahony has been instrumental in education and community engagement. He established a residential pottery school at Glencairn, offering courses that attract students from Ireland and abroad. His teaching emphasises the full ceramic cycle, from clay preparation to kiln firing, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the craft. O’Mahony’s ceramics exemplify a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. His dedication to the materiality of clay, combined with his mastery of firing techniques, results in works that are both utilitarian and evocative. Through his art and teaching, he continues to influence and inspire the field of contemporary ceramics.
