Historic Preservation work underway at Fort Monroe National Monument Over the next several months, visitors may notice historic preservation work near Quarters No. 1 and nearby historic buildings. This work supports ongoing efforts to maintain the historic landscape of #FortMonroe while addressing safety and access needs. Non-historic hedges, raised planting beds, and modern fencing around Quarters No. 1, Building #17, and 50 will be removed. These later additions block sidewalks and historic sightlines and were not part of the original landscape. All groundwork will use low impact techniques and will be monitored by a @nationalparkservice archeologist to ensure protection of any archeological resources. Preservation work is also underway on historic porches at Quarters No. 1 and Building #50. At Quarters No. 1, the two-story porch facing the #ChesapeakeBay will be repaired using materials and details that match the historic design. Decorative features will be preserved where possible and replicated where missing. Visitors may encounter temporary work areas near historic quarters. Impacts to visitor access are expected to be minimal. The National Park Service appreciates the public’s patience as this work is completed to preserve Fort Monroe’s historic buildings and landscapes for future generations. NPS Photo by @fortmonroenps

What do you do if you find an injured or orphaned bird? Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources can tell you what to do! A few weeks ago, the @nationalparkservice , @thefortmonroe (FMA), and the @virginiawildlife (DWR) responded to a call about a #BlueHeron nestling who had fallen from the nest. Collaborating the DWR, the park, and FMA was able to identify a permitted rehabilitation specialist who was able to take the nestling to a new temporary home! Meet “Dino Dave,” or Dave for short. Dave is a Great Blue Heron nestling and was estimated to be about ten days old when he fell from his nest. Nestlings as young as Dave are incredibly sensitive and fragile, so it is important to ensure that they get to someone who is qualified to care for them to ensure their best chance of survival and eventual release back into the wild. We are happy to report that Dave is doing well with his rehabilitator and is thriving. We look forward to the day when he can return home to @fortmonroenps . If a #WildAnimal has been injured or truly orphaned, locate a permitted wildlife rehabilitator by calling the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ toll-free wildlife conflict helpline at 1-855-571-9003, 8 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, or visit the permitted wildlife rehabilitator section of the DWR website. Additional information can be found at Injured and Orphaned Birds | Virginia DWR. #FortMonroe #FindYourPark #FindYourFort #EncuentraTuParque #greatblueheron DWR permitted wildlife rehabilitators: https://dwr.virginia.gov/wildlife/injured/rehabilitators/ DWR injured and orphaned birds: https://dwr.virginia.gov/wildlife/injured/birds/ by @fortmonroenps
#FortMonroe is home to a wide variety of species of migratory birds which are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act: https://rb.gy/9clh1l To ensure your safety, the safety of birds, and other wildlife, please enjoy observing them from afar to avoid disturbing them, particularly during this time of year while during the breeding and nesting season. Why does it matter? 🪶 During nesting season, birds are raising their young and need safe, quiet spaces. If nests are disturbed, it can cause birds to abandon their eggs or chicks, putting entire populations at risk. How can you help? 🌱 Keep your distance from nesting areas. 🚶‍♀️ Stick to marked trails to avoid disturbing ground nests. 🐾 Keep pets on a leash and away from nesting zones. ♻️ Dispose of trash properly to keep the environment safe. Together, we can protect our local wildlife and ensure future generations of birds thrive. 🐣💚 #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #FindYourFort #ProtectNestingBirds #MBTA #WildlifeProtection #Conservation #barber lackSkimmer @thefortmonroe Image: A large colony of black skimmer birds nesting on a beach. #DYK that October is #ArcheologyMonth in the Commonwealth of Virginia with archeology celebrated through special events and programs. This year, Virginia’s celebration corresponds with an archeological investigation occurring here at #FortMonroe. With $75,000 in funding provided by the @nationalparkservice Semiquincentennial Grant Program to @thefortmonroe , excavation work is underway to learn more about Fort George. This masonry fortification was built in 1728 and named in honor of King George II, and was the third in a series of forts constructed on Point Comfort. Although detailed plans of the fort have not been discovered, prior investigation using ground penetrating radar confirmed the presence and location of #FortGeorge near #OldPointComfortLighthouse. The Semiquincentennial Grant Program was created by Congress in 2020 to honor the 250th anniversary of the US. The program’s intent is to preserve sites and structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places that commemorate the founding of this nation. Through research, excavations, survey work, and curation of artifacts from archeological sites like Fort George, much can be learned of what people thought and how they lived during the formation of the country. #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #FindYourFort #NPS #KingGeorgeIII Image one: NPS Photo Image two: Melissa Buss Photo by @fortmonroenps
#DYK that #OTD 1824 Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayetteville, Marquis de La Fayette, better known in the US simply as #Lafayette arrived at #FortMonroe as part of his 13 months-long tour of the country as an official “Guest of the Nation?” Captain Rufus Baker, a @usarmy engineer stationed at the fort would write a letter stating, “Lafayette visited our post and stayed all night with us-receiving our Regiments and eat and drink, and then eat and drink again_In fact Mother, He eats like our doberman and always has a keen appetite for duplicate dinners suppers and breakfasts and I am told the he conquers York River Oysters that fill a tumbler.” Colonel Abraham Eustis, commanding Fort Monroe, served as host for the visit at Quarters No. 1 and showed him both fortifications under construction- the #GibraltarOfTheChesapeake and #CastleCalhoun, now known as #FortWool. Both would have greatly interested Lafayette as he had personally recommended the engineer who led the design of these works, fellow French-born Brigadier General Simon Bernard. #DYK today is National Camera Day? What better way to commemorate the invention, development, and importance of the camera with a visit to Fort Monroe National Monument. The earliest known photographic process known as “heliography” was “developed”😉 by Joseph Nicephore Niepce, a French inventor around 1822. This photographic process used the sun to make the earliest known surviving photograph from nature. Prior this this invention, Niepce served as a staff officer in the French Army under the #NapoleanBonaparte. Some time later, Simon Bernard, the designer of Fort Monroe and lead engineer developing the #3rdSystem of Fortifications, also served under #Napolean. Isn’t it interesting to think that we can combine the legacy of two fellow Frenchmen when we capture photos of Fort Monroe today! Come out to @fortmonroenps to find photographic inspiration! There is so many things to capture: the fort, casemates gun positions, the #LincolnGun, the #OldPointComfortLighthouse, the beaches, the trees, the birds, the ships, sunrise - sunset, etc. We challenge you to take your favorite photo or photos of #FortMonre and post to your own account with the hashtag #FortMonroe and @FortMonroeNPS. Happy National Camera Day! #NationalCameraDay #EncuentraTuParque #FindYourFort #FindYourPark #Camera #Photo by @fortmonroenps
“Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay.” - Barack Obama “I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.” - Abraham Lincoln Excerpt from a letter to Mrs. Bixby, Nov. 21, 1864 “These fallen heroes represent the character of a nation who has a long history of patriotism and honor - and a nation who has fought many battles to keep our country free from threats of terror.” - Michael N.
