A bespoke handmade guestbook for @somersethouse. Inspired by the 17th-century painting The Somerset House Conference (at @nationalportraitgallery).

Velvet covers and ruffled corners nod to Elizabethan dress, while the diamond-cut edges echo the tiled floor of Seamen’s Hall. Archive materials from Karen Hearn’s 2004 exhibition on the painting(s) are revealed through the exposed spine.

Musings by @araba.mercer on “belonging to a category yet to be defined” (and more) for Reimagining Ghana 🖋️🇬🇭

“A strictly dualistic approach (colonial vs postcolonial) proves too rigid when considering how the new design of urban space suggests a modern Ghana and how the lived reality of urban space in Ghana resists such boundaries. It calls for a more fluid and responsive framework that acknowledges both the remnants of colonial power and the creative possibilities that lie beyond it.”

Musings by @eileengbagbo on “cuisine as a way of preserving” (and more) for Reimagining Ghana 🖋️🇬🇭

“These chefs are showing up unapologetically in spaces that were historically exclusionary and telling stories of our past and audaciously curating Ghana’s future. In Accra, chop bars and restaurants sit side by side in the city as a reminder that food, especially in Ghana is for everyone to enjoy regardless of class or background. These culinary moments are a physical manifestation of Sankofa.”

Musings by @misbeeewrites on “cultural and geographical dislocation” and more for Reimagining Ghana 🖋️🇬🇭

“… the writers I have mentioned here hold a mirror up to society. Culture and heritage symbols commonly associated with Ghana will undoubtedly resonate positively with most of us when responding to the question of ‘What is Ghana’? And while these symbols create a shared understanding to that question, they can also limit the scope within which we are able to explore who we are. In some cases, the symbol of what Ghana is does not always match the reality on the ground, forcing those of us searching for identity to create a space where they belong.”

Musings by @demelziaia on “returning to the sun” (and more) for Reimagining Ghana 🖋️🇬🇭

“They were among the first Black families in the neighbourhood, navigating life in a foreign country with little money, a lot of pressure, and no guide. My Nan couldn’t and still doesn’t write or speak English well, my Grandad bore the weight of keeping everyone safe in a place that wasn’t always welcoming. But still with their love for God, and for each other – their light never dimmed.”
