Blast exposure is more than a single PSI number.

Peak overpressure tells you how high the pressure spike gets. Impulse tells you how much pressure is delivered over time.

Two blasts can reach the same peak pressure but create very different exposures depending on duration, environment, reflections, and other factors.

That is why peak pressure alone does not fully describe what the brain and body experience.

I hear a lot of people taking about how much LE training sucks, especially when recruits come out of basic and can barely do the basics. I hear little about why that leads to solutions.

There is a reason for that.

It is a systems issue, not just one or two things. The problem isn't one of not enough training, it is one of not enough analysis-based, well-designed training being delivered by well-developed philosopher-instructors.

It is a problem of a complete lack of training based on performance analysis.

It can be fixed. There is a solution. It just requires four scary things for a lot of instructors:

Humility.

Work ethic.

Setting standards.

A willingness to CHANGE.

Crazy how just a few months ago, I knew none of these people, and some of them have become like family to me. If you have a teachable attitude, a passion to become better, and surround yourself with studs and the right tribe, it becomes a drug. I told Tony @ground_kings_usa today that my fear used to be coming and getting tapped and embarrassed, but now it’s not being here and becoming better. Blast risk may be about more than the highest PSI someone experiences.

Peak pressure captures how high the pressure wave gets. Impulse captures both the pressure and how long that pressure acts. In this study of Special Operations breachers, cumulative blast impulse, when paired with baseline symptom burden, was the exposure measure that best predicted changes in neurobehavioral symptoms.

Blast exposure also accumulates over time. The instructors had years of occupational low-level blast exposure and entered the study with substantially higher symptom burdens than the trainees. The authors suggest that repeated exposures may aggravate unresolved injuries or reduce resilience to future blast over the course of a career. usae082.pdf

Peak PSI tells you something about one event. Cumulative impulse may tell you more about the exposure history being built across hundreds of events and years of training.

Here's the learning version of the old "Good, cheap, fast - pick two" thing.

Multiple sources, using multiple methods, reproduced studies, in several cultures have shown, overwhelmingly, that people are exceptionally poor at predicting their knowledge retention or judging what they've learned. There is a constant correlation that shows the most successful learning strategies have the least confidence from participants and vice versa. Yet, our training has rarely changed.

If you choose "high evaluations and high performance," you don't get time to train, because the system doesn't support the methods and strategies to accomplish it. It takes a long time for people to have confidence in what they've learned and the evaluations can't be immediately after a course OR just one.

"High learning retention" and "time to train," means you're going to frustrate people. We've been trained since childhood that "learning looks like this" and we reject and have no confidence in something different.

"High evaluation scores" and "time to train" means you won't have high learning retention. Study after study has demonstrated that the two are diametrically opposed. To get learning retention, you have to make people uncomfortable, let them make mistakes, change things regularly in the class, conduct practiced retrieval, and a host of other things that people don't like, but have demonstrated success.

As things are, our system is not setup to get all three, yet we make decisions on training efficacy on faulty surveys, faulty assessments, and broken training programs.

So, make the argument for change or...

...choose two.
