Just finished a second iteration of my new class "Fundamentals of Creating Training" that is still in validation mode. There were some hard spots.

I knew it. They knew it. So what should I do?

Wednesday I asked them what was landing, what wasn't, and what they would like more of.

And then I pivoted.

Not all my ideas are always going to work. Not all my plans are going to go off smoothly.

Not all of my presentation and practice tactics are going to land.

Some crash. Some crash and burn.

We all knew it, we all sensed it, but my participants’ being capable is more important than my prestige and pride. Creating a safe place to fail goes both ways - we BOTH need to be comfortable with mistakes, taking feedback, and making adjustments.

My future classes will be much more effective because of it. My participants felt more comfortable and motivated to continue through the wreckage of a couple of my topics, and they knew I respected them because I demonstrated my trust in their professionalism.

Being an instructor isn't to massage our egos and showcase our brilliance, it is a sacred position of trust and honor. We are trusted to have the participants’ well-being at heart.

We need to show how honored we are to have it, by honoring them with our trust, as well.

Changing the culture starts with the instructor.

Research from @pewsciencellc compared muzzle blast pressure and impulse across four unsuppressed 5.56 and 7.62 NATO rifle configurations.

The findings highlight how barrel length, propellant combustion, and secondary blast waves influence the pressure and impulse generated by a single shot.

Peak PSI alone doesn’t tell the whole story. The duration and timing of pressure waves also matter when characterizing blast exposure.

These findings have implications for understanding suppressor performance, although the study did not directly assess neurological injury risk.

Most training is being created by starting at the wrong place. In instructional design - the science of creating training - methodology using the ADDIE model, creating the performance objectives is in Design; creating a slide deck, outline, scenarios and activities is in Develop.

But most instructors start in Develop, missing the entire Analyze and Design Phase.

This means your training is already off the rails.

Sure, people get trained. Sure, people are performing, but creating training starting at Develop means you are missing A LOT of opportunities, creating too generalized a product, or are creating change that never sticks.

It can't stick, because it is missing key elements injected by "expert blindness."

And sure, your people may LOVE your training, but research has shown that participant reactions has almost ZERO correlation with learning.

The fix takes work. The fix takes time. But if your response to fixing things is "well, my way has always worked for me," you're saying EXACTLY what most people claim to hate: "this is the way we've always done it." You literally are doing the way it has always been done...

And it is wrong.
