STRATEGIES: APPROACHING THE PHOTOBOOK takes participants through the publishing entire process from A to Z — from creative strategies, editing and sequencing through to design, production, logistics and promotion — across four packed days of exercises, one-to-one reviews, group critiques and tailored feedback on your own book project, set against the backdrop of one of Canada’s most beautiful natural environments. “Florida Boys is a 6-year photographic series I began in 2020, during the pandemic. At a moment when isolation, fear, and uncertainty reshaped life, I started traveling Florida’s backroads with groups of young men, many of them first-generation youth from Miami, like myself. For us, these landscapes were unfamiliar. Despite growing up in Florida, we had rarely been invited into its interior spaces beyond the versions sold to us through postcards and myth.The work became a way of getting to know the land together, and of questioning what Florida actually is beyond the fantasies projected onto it. (...) Florida Boys began as a way to challenge that inheritance, and to imagine something else in its place.Working in a staged, narrative mode, I collaborate closely with my subjects to construct scenes of rest, tenderness, and play. The photographs draw from visual traditions of Americana and coming-of-age imagery, alongside influences like Justine Kurland’s Girl Pictures and vernacular photographs of the Florida School for Boys, but shift those references through collaboration rather than authority. These are not images taken of people, but images made with them.The resulting tableaux sit between fact and fiction. They are rooted in real locations and lived relationships, yet loosely choreographed and emotionally intentional (...) The camera becomes a site of negotiation and trust, allowing gestures, dynamics, and moments of intimacy to emerge.Rather than centering dominance, Florida Boys looks toward other forms of masculinity: friendship, vulnerability, curiosity, bodies at rest. My own distance from traditional models of masculinity, expressed through a recurring attention in my photographs to how men touch, gather, and look at one another, informs the project’s tone and sensibility. “To Make a Stone” is about photography’s capacity for creating illusions, and a desire to see the physical world as capable of change. Using collected material (bricks, stone, concrete, and steel) from my surroundings alongside printed and rephotographed objects, my pictures construct a new world, unmoored from the logic of our physical reality. Heavy and solid bricks become light and transparent, landscapes on paper twist and bend into transformed spaces, and the ambient dust in a room coalesces into a galaxy. The intrinsic flattening of depth, the merging of materials and textures when depicted in black and white, and the weightlessness of photographic space contribute to a site of mystery and new understanding. With the future progressing towards an increasingly unreal, digital existence, my photographs speak to the desire for potential in the tangible. The built landscape is continually remade, objects of physical touch and history are discarded, and our eyes look towards screens for the new. Through photography, I show that these elemental materials are still sites of discovery, and imagine the world that has been left behind as unfixed and mutable.”– @max__labelle Max LaBelle is a photographer living and working in Central Massachusetts. “Honeywood is a photographic series created between the summers of 2024 and 2025 in and around Nashville, Tennessee. Through quiet observation, natural light, and an intimate approach to portraiture and landscape, the work reflects on the nostalgia of Southern summers and the ways memory becomes intertwined with place. The series explores themes of youth, connection, and the fleeting beauty of ordinary moments, creating images that feel deeply personal. Good news photographers: early bird registrations for acclaimed documentary photographer @moisessaman’s 5-day workshop in magical Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) have been extended until the end of the month (July 31st)!As one of the most substantive and accomplished documentarians working today, Moises will bring his two decades plus of experience developing complex projects rooted in honest and empathetic witnessing at the forefront of devastating conflicts and upending changes to both challenge and strengthen the participants’ storytelling skills and overall evolving practices.Each day will focus on a different aspect of the photographic journey and will be grounded in practical shooting exercises. We will begin by looking closely at how photographs function within larger narratives and how composition, light, timing, and sequencing shape meaning. From there, we will examine the ethics of bearing witness, drawing on examples from my own experience working in conflict zones and communities affected by crises. We will also discuss long-form documentary practice, the realities of sustaining projects over many years, and the _bookschallenge of balancing journalism, personal vision, and the changing demands of the photographic industry.Participants are encouraged to bring an ongoing or future project to develop throughout the workshop. Through individual and group critiques, we will look not only at the photographs themselves but also at the intentions behind them. What story are you trying to tell? Why does it matter to you? What assumptions are you bringing to it? How can the work move beyond description and toward something more lasting? These are some of the questions Moises and the group will explore together. I compose the scene, set the camera to capture frames at fixed intervals, then step in and begin. Over time, fatigue, boredom, and wandering attention wear down the initial intent. My body settles into rest, makes minor shifts, or slips into everyday gestures. The performance quietly unravels into something more lived and momentary.From hundreds of frames, I select one.Across repeated iterations of this exercise, clear patterns emerge in how I inhabit both roles: photographer and sitter. I consistently position myself far enough from the lens for the environment to absorb my form, reducing the figure to one element among many in the landscape’s larger composition. My face is often obscured or turned away, denying the central conceit of the camera’s presence. The endeavor is a living paradox, a fumbling toward self-belief while leaning into vulnerability. I am capable of harsh judgment and genuine empathy in both directions, as creator to subject and vice versa.
