Discover the story behind THE CLASSROOM by Hicham Benohoud, one of our most beloved books of recent years.

Between 1994 and 2002 in Marrakech, @hichambenohoud created a darkroom inside his classroom and collaborated with his students to create absurdist, uncanny compositions that function as a postcolonial critique of identity, control and discipline decades ahead of their time.

We were curious about this remarkable story, and after inviting Benohoud to Marseille he trusted us with all his negatives from the era, from which @sarahpespenon carefully built an expanded sequence that balances between tension and play, highlighting both the creative and pedagogic aspects of the work alongside its conceptual, political intentions.

CYAN YEARS: Continuing our FW26 season with @jean_vincent.simonet sentimental and experimental artist’s book that turns his family offset printing factory into subject, tool and method.

French artist Simonet has spent years working inside his family’s four-generation offset printing factory in Bourgoin-Jallieu, using the site itself to create his unique artworks that blur the lines between photography, painting and installation. In CYAN YEARS, Simonet turns to the factory itself and it’s uncertain future, creating an exhaustive inventory of the factory’s innards that also serves as a monograph of Simonet’s own process-based practice: press interventions, tests, finished works, snapshot images, family archive and more, all printed entirely within the factory’s own walls, subject to interventions by the artist himself.

CYAN YEARS is both abstract and intensely personal – an ode to an industrial family heritage whose future hangs in the balance, and a tribute to the artistry and labour of those who deliver, discreetly, the printed matter of our quotidian.

This week our sister bookshop @ensemble_books turns 5! We opened Ensemble in 2021 in our adopted city of Marseille as a space to gather around books and share what we do, a unique space in the centre of town that houses a bookshop, our atelier and a fulfilment warehouse.

Over those years Ensemble has welcomed so many special events, artists, collaborators, staff, and most importantly books. Thank you so much to everyone that has made it possible.

COSMOPOLEMOS: How does the American military-industrial complex spread its web over our modern world? Artist-investigator duo Edmund Clark & Crofton Black spent seven years creating a critical archive of American imperialism and influence, exploring 43 million recorded transaction lines of US military spending between September 2001 and the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Across close to 600 pages, Clark & Black create a detailed, critical index whose sheer scale mirrors the system it scrutinises. COSMOPOLEMOS maps the geopolitical influence of these transactions against their countries of provenance, alongside a detailed glossary that creatively and obliquely associates them with the Pentagon’s own photographic archive.
