DOMAIN ROAD

The first slice of a very beautiful pie.

Part of a project spanning two heritage apartments, this bathroom is the first space to be (almost) complete — and what a way to begin.

Icy-blue tiles meet rich Rosso Levanto marble, bringing drama, depth and plenty of character to this small but perfectly formed space.

We can’t wait to share more of this project as it unfolds. Stay tuned.

BARKLY HOUSE

A favourite space of ours, the extension at Barkly House turns inward and finds generosity in the unexpected.

For this North Fitzroy Edwardian, the brief was simple: create a warm, light-filled home for a young family without compromising the character of the existing house or overwhelming its neighbours.

A single-storey extension is shaped around an asymmetrical pyramidal ceiling, crowned by a generous skylight that draws daylight deep into the home. Polished plaster reflects the changing light throughout the day, while a small west-facing courtyard and large opening to the rear garden bring in fresh air, greenery and views of sky (not neighbours!)

The result is a home that feels surprisingly spacious despite its narrow urban site — generous on the inside, restrained on the outside.

/ THE OTHER THINGS WE DO / MUTUAL MUSE

We love colour. It immediately signals the personality of a project.

Sometimes it’s subtle — appearing in small, unexpected moments.
Sometimes it’s all-encompassing — a room drenched in colour.
And sometimes, it’s just nuts.

At Mutual Muse, we got to use the stuff no one lets us put in their house: magenta goat-hair carpet, paired with chartreuse velvet curtains. A little outrageous and a lot of fun. And perfectly matched to the expressive, optimistic spirit of @mutualmuse.

Of course, if you do want that carpet in your house..........

/ THE OTHER THINGS WE DO / GREENSPACE

We love designing houses. But every now and then, we like to do something different.

Commercial projects — offices, shops, and, in this case, the transformation of a warehouse into an event space crossed with a plant-hire business — let us exercise a few different muscles.

Different constraints. Different rules. Different opportunities.

At Greenspace, we inserted a giant greenhouse inside a larger 1980s warehouse. Large sliding polycarbonate panels allow the greenhouse to open and close, creating a flexible space that can adapt to groups of all sizes.

And best of all? It glows ✨

COMING SOON

We're very excited to share more of our Red Hill House with you soon.

A rambling late '70s holiday house with views over vineyards to Western Port Bay beyond, there was much to love from the beginning.

The era of home captured the imagination of us and our clients. They had already named the bedroom end of the house "the motel." Our brief was to retain the nostalgia and charm of the house while elevating it to something truly refined and special.

On Sunday, our Bourke Street Apartment will be open as part of Melbourne Open House. @emagnvic is running "Generous Typologies: A walk through the CBD."

Alongside The Orica Building by @batessmart and SAADI by @more_kta, Bourke Street apartment offers visitors a taste of residential life in the CBD.

One of our very first projects, Bourke Street is one of those projects we'll always love. And it's a real encapsulation of our approach at Fowler and Ward. While it's an interior renovation, it's strongly architectural with the design being driven by the bold personality of the existing building. It's a clever and efficient use of space. And it's colourful and full of personality. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do!

Working on so many inner-urban sites, we’re frequently weighing up access to views and light against a level of privacy.

Charles House is a single fronted terrace house renovation located on a corner site. With two sides of the block exposed to the street and a third to a laneway it was a challenge to create a light, bright and open space without feeling like our clients were living on show!

Here, a continuous band of horizontal glazing runs the length of the extension. It’s placed just above eye-height to provide a view of sky and trees. Now and then the band is interrupted - like when you’re walking upstairs - and you get a chance to wave to your neighbours.

Building and living in dense suburbs is all about being a good neighbour. We think deeply about the balance between the space our clients need and its impact on the street and the neighbourhood. We find that working through and exploring these opposing factors often brings about the most creative outcomes.

CANTALA HOUSE

Another house, another sunken lounge. Yep we love them!

Cozy and adding a touch of nostalgia, they’re a great tool to softly define space within a bigger open plan area.

At our Cantala house, we dropped the lounge to provide views into the existing swimming pool area. The pool sat much lower than the rest of the garden and previously felt a bit forgotten. Now the comfy Puffalo couch by @rossdidier provides a sunny vantage point with views out to the east.

BALMORAL HOUSE

While we’re suffering through a Melbourne Winter, please enjoy the sight of some spring sunshine sneaking under a northern eave.

Most of our clients come to us with terrace-house PTSD. So many of us have suffered through long winters in uninsulated, dark, drafty houses. We know what it’s like to have the old toilet occupying the only sunny corner of the block, or having to eat your dinner wearing a puffer jacket and beanie. Perhaps it’s a Melbourne rite of passage - but it’s also shit.

Balmoral House has a prime orientation - a north facing backyard. This gave us the opportunity to open up to the garden with a big bank of glazing. And the right sized eave blocks summer sun while letting winter sun stream in, warming up the concrete slab and providing great thermal mass to the building.

The orientation of a building (or an extension, or new openings in walls) is always our starting point. Addressing the fundamental basics of passive building design and harnessing the power of sun, shade and cross ventilation goes an enormous way towards providing a comfortable place to live.

We're thrilled that our Yarra House has been shortlisted in the 2026 Houses Awards.

This grand old dame was reimagined for modern family life over many years. It has been shortlisted in both the Alterations and Additions over 200 square metres and House in a Heritage Context categories.
