The Common House is at the junction of the two outdoor streets that organize the community. If you arrive by car, you park behind it and circulate around or through it to reach your house.
—Trudeslund in Birkerød, Denmark by @vandkunsten

Communal spaces are more likely to be active if people pass by (or through) them in the course of their daily routines.

A large plaza, market, and indoor communal space are located centrally, at a spot everyone passes by.
—Siedlung Halen in Kirchlindach, Switzerland by Atelier 5

This was the only place I visited with a successful market. It’s worth noting that it has 80 units, is a bit outside Bern, and is near several other similar housing developments.

Reservable public gathering spaces (“Option Rooms”) are located on the ground floor of each of the three buildings that make up the community. Two face the central outdoor space, and one faces the main arrival point.
—Coop Housing at River Spreefeld in Berlin, Germany by Carpaneto Architekten, @fatkoehlarchitekten , & BARarchitekten

This one, “the food & community” room, has large windows, a projector, rearrangeable tables & chairs, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

Like all the Nightingale projects I visited, most of the communal space is on the roof. At ParkLife, this includes: laundry, clotheslines, a bathroom, a productive garden, a grassy area, a covered deck, an electric barbecue, and an amphitheater.
—Nightingale ParkLife in Melbourne, Australia by @austinmaynardarchitects

The Common House is centrally located (left of image). It connects two 3-story housing blocks (one is visible on the right of this image). The steel framework creates a sheltered outdoor space.
—Murundaka Cohousing in Melbourne, Australia by Daryl Pelchen

Looking down on the dining space of the Common House from a second-floor circulation route. Outdoor halls wrap around two sides and lead to the 3-story housing blocks.

A home reimagined with restraint.

Where ceilings glow with timber warmth and every frame finds the garden. Walls were moved, but not too many. Light was welcomed, but never shouted.

The Austin House is about thoughtful edits, quiet generosity, and a rhythm of materials that lets life unfold softly.

Brunswick by Fowler and Ward draws on mid‑century modern palettes, reinterpreted for contemporary living. Warm, nostalgic tones are balanced with contrast, creating an interior that feels welcoming yet current.

Laminex White acts as a cool foundation, offset by a Laminex Burnt Ochre island benchtop and stainless steel to sharpen the composition.

This week has been allllll about render finishes and exterior paint. We want warm but not yellow. White but not blinding. Beige but not too pink. Ten sample pots of “white” later and I think we found the winner 🙃✨

There’s the happy happenstance of finding a landscape designer living over your back fence. But just wait till they install the hot tub.

Neighbours met through their kids at the local primary school. It was the perfect scenario. Employing local people with local knowledge.

The owners knew from looking at their super simple renovation plan that they would need to be thinking about the garden from the start. The new plan opened up the back of the house – the garden would be the view. The sneaky addition added a slice of living space down the side of the existing house – one of those gorgeous well-made brick houses in Melbourne’s inner North.

Superb brickwork and considered spaces that marks the influence of European immigrant architecture. And it’s pretty hard to fault for easy living.
