BA & BFA are officially mine!
I am so grateful for the friendships & community I built through NSCAD. Grateful for the footing and found family moving to Kjipuktuk granted me, I love to be able to breathe deeply out here and look forward to getting to know her more now that I’m not in school.

That being said, my acknowledgement of the land, my time and the obtaining of these degrees, means absolutely nothing if universities across Turtle Island do not divest from investing in companies, people, & causes that benefit the ongoing colonial imperialism in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Haiti, Cuba, Iraq, and in so many more that I don’t know to list. colonialism is everywhere, it is insidious.

Earlier in the Fall 2023 semester, NSCAD president Peggy Shannon sent out an institution wide email telling us that anti-semitic actions and opinions would not be tolerated. Yet when pressed to clarify the universities stance on anti-Palestine racism and Islamophobia, we never received direct answers. Today this behaviour continues: current president & interim provost @nscaduniversity sent another email re: NSCAD’s investments and divestment. It’s an unacceptable response to calls from SUNSCAD, Student Action Groups, and various student actions at graduation. Universities need to disclose and divest now. We cannot wait till the Fall 2024 semester to “discuss divestment.” I don’t care about your trips or vacations. I don’t care about an ethical investment plan without proof. There is an active genocide. Anything other than immediate action is disgusting and inexcusable. We need public transparency now.

striped corners, 2024
4x5 film, collaged and printed

literally my favourite piece i think i’ve ever made 💙

I have wanted to reflect on photo as a physical presence for a very, very long time. I think I had the original idea back at Bealart… but I kept running into roadblocks: latex photo transfers and plaster casts were too obviously separate from my body.

ended up taking a 6 year break but we got there in the end :)

entirely self shot, really important to me that this work was a self portrait via mirrors and lenses

want to get back to this xoxo

On Friday, June 12th, The Turret Arts Space hosted a Places of Pride Stamp celebration following the launch in on June 4th in Toronto at @the519! ✨ The four-stamp issue commemorates The Turret Club (1976-1982) as a significant piece of queer heritage in Canada, honouring the space's history and impact on the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Speaking at the Halifax launch are Turret Arts Space Society's Brit Fox, queer historian and Take Back The Turret member Robin Metcalfe, Lauren Harris from Canada post, as well as local author and activist Rebecca Rose.

Dan Hamilton, VP of Communications and Stakeholder Management, addresses the Turret and its history: "The Turret, The Turret of downtown Halifax, provided a safe space and a time and place which simply didn't exist for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Halifax."

@canadapostagram

Featured in Places of Pride 2026 are:
🌈 The 519 Toronto
🌈 Metamorphosis festival in Saskatoon
🌈 Little Sister's Book & Art Emporium in Vancouver
🌈 The Turret in Halifax

sharing some of my favourite Land Day posters, mostly found through The Palestine Poster Project Archives which was created for a masters project by Dan Walsh, definitely check it out :)

For context in 1976, the occuping israeli government announced they would be confiscating land partly owned by Arab farmers and near the villages of Sakhnin and Arraba. Both towns declared a general strike and multiple marches took place between Galilee and the Negev (a desert in occupied Palestine). In response the israeli military killed 6 people, injured 100, and jailed 100's more. Mostly farmers and laborers who worked the lands that israel was after; as a result many of the posters here reflect acts of harvesting/farming and resistance fighting woven together.

Land Day/The Day of the Land commemorates the connection between the people and the land; recognizing the many Palestinian lives lost in resisting the colonial occupation of Palestine. I've been trying to make more time to reflect on historic and contemporary moments of resistance; so often violent resistance is propagandized into either tragedy for the occupiers or celebration when they claim to have "squashed" it... feels important to remember those moments as what they actually are: powerful moments of Indigenous resistance.

TURRET OPEN HOUSE!

This weekend we're so pleased to announce that Turret will be open on Saturday & Sunday!

Saturday 21st March: 10am - 2pm
Sunday 22nd March: 2pm - 5:45pm, then we're off to @stardustbarhalifax for the Variety Show!

VP of the TASS board @foxtrapped will be there both days with tea, coffee, and merch! Plus we'll have guests from our community coalition TAKE BACK THE TURRET stopping by throughout!

Want to chat about the building and its history? Learn about our plans for the space? Just want to walk through an incredible historic buidling in the heart of downtown - come on down!!

📣📣 On a serious note, if HRM decides to ignore the community's pleas to save the space - Turret Arts Space Society & Take Back the Turret will lose total access to this incredible building.

We're not giving up any time soon - but we want our community to know that the end of March is the last time we can guarantee hosting folks in the building.

If this weekend doesn't work - do not hesitate to get in touch with us! We want you to make sure as many folks as possible can access the space! by @foxtrapped

Sending our endless gratitude to everyone that braved the weather and visited us for a TAKE BACK THE TURRET Queer History Teach In with @novascotiastudentstrike @studentunionofnscad and @nsyouthproject !

It warmed all of our hearts to see the building come to life with so many people who showed up and spent this rainy Tuesday together. It's such an important reminder that spaces like the Turret: where we can go to gather & organize with one another are vital to our communities not just surviving - but thriving. Communities create these spaces because they are rarely provided to us and never without a fight.

Today's speakers included Robin Metcalfe, Lynn Murphy, and Nathan Elling all of who organzied in the building throughout the 70's-90's, @carmelyouthproject who prompted folks to think through what queer futures within the Turret building might look like, and @foxtrapped (b.fox) Vice President with TASS who spoke about the dreams of an accessible queer art space and how we've worked to make those a real potential. Knowing our history makes us able to fight for our futures.

You can find the rest of the student strike events alongside the reasons why the students are organizing in their bio and posts!

And we invite you to come out to the events this weekend and next week! We're so excited to see you!!! 💙💙💙💙

A little late posting this but hopefully we can all prep for tomorrow and the rest of the week - friendly reminder to be a pain in the ass to our politicians who are happily ushering in the next wave of fascism. by @foxtrapped
