POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Absolutely over the moon to have been shortlisted for the British Photography Awards (Architecture Category) with one of my random motorway photos.

One of my favourite buildings, this is the Pennine Tower, an iconic Grade II listed architectural landmark at Lancaster (Forton) Services on the M6 in Lancashire. Originally opened as a luxury 120-seat restaurant and rooftop sun deck/observation platform in 1965, it was closed in 1989 due to changing safety and fire regulations, and remains unused.

This image was taken from the passenger seat whilst travelling the M6 southbound at 79mph.

Voting is now open for the People’s Choice Award - I know my style of photography isn’t to everyone’s taste (😁), and there are so many amazing finalists, but if you’d like to vote for me I’d be ever so grateful and the 🔗 is in my bio.

Thank you so much to @britishphotographyawards (and to you if you vote for me 😁)

This image was taken from the A1(M) southbound in Stockton-on-Tees, in January this year.

So excited and a wee bit overwhelmed now to have had a second photograph shortlisted, this time for @visualartsscotland’s annual exhibition in the Royal Scottish Academy building in January 2027.

Another of my favourite structures, the Forth Bridge links Edinburgh to Fife and beyond by rail. Opened in 1890, the bridge was the world’s first major entirely steel-constructed structure and is the world’s second-longest cantilever bridge span; designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

I’ve taken hundreds of photos of this bridge - in all weathers, from afar, up close, from the train crossing it, and handily there’s a pub garden which sits almost directly underneath it. This photo though was taken using an iPhone from a moving car and is printed on aluminium at 75cm x 100cm.

Thank you so much @visualartsscotland.

As many of you will know, I recently did a social media post listing what goes into running The House of Smalls, which somewhat underlined my perpetual panic regarding the financial stresses of keeping THOS going. I find it very difficult to ask for help but so many people responded with brilliant ideas to raise some funds (including a coffee/tip link which I will add to the website), and I really liked the idea of a postcard fundraiser but with a dollhouse twist as suggested by @senojlas, as, after all, that’s where THOS began.

So. I have no idea how this will go, but this is a call for 10cm x 10cm (rough guide) dollhouse art donations (no theme) to help raise funds for The House of Smalls. Small sculptures are also very welcome!

Each tiny original artwork will be for sale at £20 and sold on a first come first served basis on the night. Artwork will remain anonymous, with artists’ names revealed once the work has been purchased! All funds raised will go towards keeping The House of Smalls visible with a high street presence and exhibitions. All unsold work will be added to the website for sale as part of the fundraiser.

Every small artwork makes a difference and if you can’t donate, please share this with anyone who might be interested.

TO DONATE ARTWORK PLEASE EMAIL AN IMAGE OF THE WORK WITH YOUR NAME (OR ANON), AND ARTWORK TITLE AND MEDIUM TO:

amy@thehouseofsmalls.com

I will reply to your email with an address to send the work to - please send it to arrive by 7 FEBRUARY 2027.

Thank you so, so much 🖤🖤🖤 taken in The House of Smalls by @fragilityofself

The slow, relentless, padding step
That never goes astray
The rustle in the underbush
The shadow in the way
The straining fight, the long pursuit
The steady gain behind
Death-wearied man and tireless brute,
And the struggle wild and blind
~ Charlotte Perkins Gilman [excerpt from The Wolf at the Door]

Really moving to see the Knife Angel today, currently at Kirkgate at the bottom of Leith Walk in Edinburgh. One of those things where not only the more you look the more you see, but more the realisation of what you’re viewing sinks in.

Lisa Petrie and her family campaigned to bring the monument to Edinburgh following the death of Lisa’s 22-year-old son, John McNab, in Leith a year ago.

*Created by artist Alfie Bradley and the British Ironworks Centre, The Knife Angel, made from over 100,000 seized blades, was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour whilst solidifying our critical need for social change. Not only does the Angel act as a catalyst for turning the tide on violent and aggressive behaviour, but it is also acts as a beautiful memorial designed to celebrate those lives who have been lost through these violent and thoughtless actions.

Community bleed and trauma kits are also being made available in Edinburgh and are being supported through fundraising by Lisa Petrie and the Council and are intended to help communities respond to serious injuries and potentially save the lives of victims of knife and violent crime.

Unbelievably, the summer/fringe show in August will be The House of Smalls’ 30th exhibition, and I will try and do a retrospective type thingy of all the shows.

Coming up shortly is also the 2-year anniversary of relocating to Scotland and as I get ready for the 11th show here, I thought I’d add a little reminder of the exhibitions so far in the wee Edinburgh space.

Thank you so much as ever to everyone who’s supported me on this amazing journey, The House of Smalls couldn’t and wouldn’t exist without you.

Woody’s Bottom and Bass Rock

I’ve had an affinity with horses for the whole of my life, they and the sea are my safe and happy places. I can’t ride anymore due to back injury and pain…so I’m learning to drive instead. To have the company of a horse, the sea, and the wonderful Carol by my side today brought about a short period of peace that’s been missing for a while ❤️

And northern gannets have started returning to Bass Rock following the devastating avian flu outbreak a couple of years ago ❤️
