I’ve noticed recently that more and more often THOS is referred to as a team, having a team, and emails and enquiries are being addressed to ‘the team at…’

Whilst this really, really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, a little irk in me led to rumination. Which grew the irk and in turn led to listing - not because I’m being precious (I am being a bit precious) but because there is no team in THOS. No team in I. It really is just me, because that’s the way it works.

The financial pressures and stresses of running THOS are huge and I’m so grateful to every single person who comes through the door (literally and metaphorically) - to all of the artists, the amazing people I knew before and have met since, the visitors and the buyers and the followers, and for the support the THOS ‘ethos’ has had since its dollhouse beginnings. THOS couldn’t exist without you.

But like everything else, the future of THOS is uncertain, costs continue to rise, and at some point I will need to stop procrastinating and make some difficult decisions (not least because its about time I bought a round at the pub and a new jumper). But…I’ll do that later. In the meantime, I thought I’d share some of those lists and facts; and of course Little Amy, Little Alan, and Brenda. They ARE a team, just not ‘the team at…’

Loves.

Amy ❤️❤️

As many of you will know, I recently did a social media post listing what goes into running The House of Smalls, which somewhat underlined my perpetual panic regarding the financial stresses of keeping THOS going. I find it very difficult to ask for help but so many people responded with brilliant ideas to raise some funds (including a coffee/tip link which I will add to the website), and I really liked the idea of a postcard fundraiser but with a dollhouse twist as suggested by @senojlas, as, after all, that’s where THOS began.

So. I have no idea how this will go, but this is a call for 10cm x 10cm (rough guide) dollhouse art donations (no theme) to help raise funds for The House of Smalls. Small sculptures are also very welcome!

Each tiny original artwork will be for sale at £20 and sold on a first come first served basis on the night. Artwork will remain anonymous, with artists’ names revealed once the work has been purchased! All funds raised will go towards keeping The House of Smalls visible with a high street presence and exhibitions. All unsold work will be added to the website for sale as part of the fundraiser.

Every small artwork makes a difference and if you can’t donate, please share this with anyone who might be interested.

TO DONATE ARTWORK PLEASE EMAIL AN IMAGE OF THE WORK WITH YOUR NAME (OR ANON), AND ARTWORK TITLE AND MEDIUM TO:

amy@thehouseofsmalls.com

I will reply to your email with an address to send the work to - please send it to arrive by 7 FEBRUARY 2027.

Thank you so, so much 🖤🖤🖤 taken in The House of Smalls by @thehouseofsmalls

The slow, relentless, padding step
That never goes astray
The rustle in the underbush
The shadow in the way
The straining fight, the long pursuit
The steady gain behind
Death-wearied man and tireless brute,
And the struggle wild and blind
~ Charlotte Perkins Gilman [excerpt from The Wolf at the Door]

Absolutely over the moon to have been shortlisted for the British Photography Awards (Architecture Category) with one of my random motorway photos.

One of my favourite buildings, this is the Pennine Tower, an iconic Grade II listed architectural landmark at Lancaster (Forton) Services on the M6 in Lancashire. Originally opened as a luxury 120-seat restaurant and rooftop sun deck/observation platform in 1965, it was closed in 1989 due to changing safety and fire regulations, and remains unused.

This image was taken from the passenger seat whilst travelling the M6 southbound at 79mph.

Voting is now open for the People’s Choice Award - I know my style of photography isn’t to everyone’s taste (😁), and there are so many amazing finalists, but if you’d like to vote for me I’d be ever so grateful and the 🔗 is in my bio.

Thank you so much to @britishphotographyawards (and to you if you vote for me 😁)

Here we go…again…

When Dave asked recently what I wanted for my birthday, (and on being told yet again that having a horse in a rented basement flat in central Edinburgh isn’t appropriate), I did what any sane 56yr old would do and asked instead for a dollhouse to build from scratch.

For the next few weeks THOS will be open as a corner shop and studio whilst I turn this big girl into an Edinburgh tenement gallery. This is the very first stage - she’s currently held together with tape and will be around 45cm(w) x 140cm(h) x 45cm(d) when finished.

I’d forgotten I had all the show posters as I just put them on top of each other in the pavement sign and found them when I cleaned it the other day - it’s really nice to see them all together.

Thank you to @tinsleylockh.art for the freshly picked apples, I have the loveliest neighbours.

MOTHER
December 2023
Snails: Theros, Sage & Merry
£NFS

The end of this journey.
This work come to rest.
I’m surrounded by love and at peace with it all.
No longer gripping to control the chaos.
Living firmly within it with a new-born.
Loving firmly within it.
No more heartbreak, no more grief.
I still feel it all.
I still feel it big.
But I know this is my real super power.
To raise a child who will never struggle to understand how empathy is a gift.
A child who will always know love and know that they are loved by me.
A child who will never doubt their self-worth, or wonder if they even belong in this world.
A child confident in their Mother’s love.
For eternity and whatever lies beyond.

Mini Book (3D)
July – October 2021
Snails: The Babies
£NFS

Once Lion’s babies were big enough to join in, I let them from time to time, create some mini paintings.
Using the same processes that the adult snails used.
But the tiniest little trails end up looking like ancient writing across the page.
Which gave me the idea to turn them into a miniature book.
The cover was originally made from tree bark, which had warped over time, but too much to be able to open it and view the artwork. So I removed it carefully and re-covered it with some paper thin, cherry tree bark to allow it more flexibility.

A tiny piece of nature’s finest art.

The Blues (in the Dollhouse)
November 2022
Snails: A variety of snails
£25 each

The Blues, as per the other work, tell a very sad, but also very happy story.
And the large work, I think, conveys my thoughts.
But to really convey the extent of those blue lines, I thought a miniature show within the dollhouse gallery would work.
So here are The Blues.
Each tiny piece represents a tiny part of the blues I felt along the way.
The happy and the sad.

The frames are handmade from actual twigs, transformed into miniature frame shapes and cast. Exactly the shape of frame I envision in a snail gallery.

The Blues
November 2022
Snails: Augusta, Fika & Theros
£NFS (see dollhouse frames for mini versions)

Blue.
A calm colour.
The colour of the sky on a clear day.
Of the sea when it’s still and bright.
Happy things.
Right?
But what about a blue line?
What if one blue line never turns to two?
What if one blue line is all you see?
Month after month after month.
Or worse; you glimpse those double lines only to find them gone again weeks later.
Blue becomes a sadder colour.
A jazz melody that pulls you down.
A heavy coat you can’t shrug off.
A puddle you feel like you’re sinking into.
Deep and unending grief.
The Blues.
