It has been exactly two years since I created this account! And so much has changed in that time, both in my personal life and in my photography, that it feels like the right moment to reintroduce this page:

Hello! My name is Bryan and I am a Taiwanese-Canadian film and digital photographer based in Vancouver.

I first picked up a film camera as a way to document the life around me, treating photography as a personal visual journal I could return to over time. What began as an inward practice gradually expanded into a broader interest in capturing the human experience, the fleeting moments between people, and the quiet details found in the smallest corners of the world.

I predominantly shoot #35mm film and am drawn to street and social documentary photography, as well as weddings, engagements, and other meaningful life events. Across all of these spaces I am interested in moments that feel honest and unguarded; the ones that might otherwise pass unnoticed in this ever fast-paced world of ours.

In my work I often aim to create images with a painterly quality or frames that feel as though they have been pulled from a film. I am drawn to photographs that resemble the middle of a story, moments without a clear beginning or end. Whether through the arrangement of people within a scene or through close textured abstractions, I hope to transform everyday moments into something a little more interpretive and shaped by feeling.

Photography allows me to slow down, pay attention, and connect with people and places in a way I might not otherwise. More than anything it has taught me to find joy in the act of noticing.

This is Taiwan: vibrant, colourful, and still at play.

’Still At Play’ (孩在玩) is the third and final book in a trilogy of street and travel documentary photography, following ‘You Are Here’ (現在地) and Dog Days Don’t Fade. The photographs were made across four cities: Miaoli, Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Changhua (苗栗、台北、高雄、彰化).

Being around my family, my friends, and even strangers in Taiwan reminded me how to laugh and play in ways I hadn’t in years. I found myself revisiting memories I had forgotten, parts of myself I had left behind, and the simple things that once made me happy, before life became so serious and grey.

In my eyes, (self)love requires curiosity, playfulness, and a little bit of childlike wonder. It means being curious about what made you happy when you were unburdened, before you began worrying about what was realistic, what was acceptable, or who you were supposed to become. I think that’s what these photographs are really about: returning home, remembering how to play, and allowing myself to remain curious about who I am and who I might still become. I hope some of that joy comes through in the images in this book: the awe, silliness, and tenderness.

I’ve included some photographs that are part of ‘Still At Play’, organized into specific colours, for no reason other than for my own enjoyment.

[A set of forgotten photos taken in early May, 2026].

The first thought I had was “I wish I had taken these on colour film.” The deep baby blue sky as a backdrop to the vast assembly of colourful kites, dancing and painting themselves across the horizon. But alas, monochrome film was the only thing I had on me at the time.

But the second thought I had was: “No, I’m glad I even got to take these. I’m glad I even got to be there!”

It wasn’t part of the day’s itinerary to encounter a giant boat or a kite festival in the middle of a field. (Honestly, most of the entirety of last year or so was not part of the itinerary too.) And if anything, shooting black and white helped me focus on the compositional layering of subjects in way that I am very pleased with here :D

Sometimes I second guess myself a lot as a photographer (or just as myself), or look back and ask myself what I could have done better. It’s in my nature, or maybe just my personality, to always doubt whether what I’m doing is right; if I am presenting my ideas clearly enough. But I’m learning to reflect and give myself room to breathe, to let my photography breathe too, and to remind myself that not everything has to be perfect.

Maybe that’s what I’m trying to remind myself of more these days: how far life has taken me, even through the strangest of times. Despite certain things not being in our control, we can always try to keep pushing forward with the cards we’re dealt, without letting cynicism or self-criticism take too much of a hold over us.
