"Breaking the News, an installation that delves into how algorithms shape and manipulate the news, adopts the visual language of mainstream press media for social media. "Franc", the artist's alter ego, uses real headlines taken directly from mainstream outlets, pairing them with manipulated photos to craft alternative narratives that deliver socio-political commentary.

The installation showcases over a hundred news items displayed on screens suspended from scaffolding. Additionally, footage of urban interventions is presented in the same style as traditional news broadcasts. The work highlights how algorithms determine what content we see or don’t see on digital platforms, questioning the reliability and objectivity of news in the digital age and the social media landscape."

Part of the @frank.mohr.institute accreditation, “Breaking the News” is an adaptive installation that transforms with the space and materials. The archive expands as new entries are added.

Over a hundred manipulated news items are showcased, using real headlines and digitally altered images. Through graphic design and artificial intelligence, new narratives are created to critique current events and question the concept of truth.

Set in a former clinic in Limassol, "Dreamland" unfolded inside a small room staged like an X-ray chamber. Visitors could look through a window watching as if observing a scan or step inside and be surrounded by the work.

On a medical lightbox, two X-ray films introduced the piece: the first, shaping a landscape of Limassol city embedding thirty local news stories in surreal fragments; the second, a key that revealed each hidden headline and its date.

Across three synchronized screens, the same headlines scrolled ,on MRI scans visuals, animated and distorted through AI manipulations. News became unstable, shifting between clarity and satire.

"Limassol Report" installation presented at Right to Home by The Island Club in Cyprus. Curated by Androula Kafa . This installation plays with the format of Instagram feeds, recreating a scroll through Limassol locals’ feeds. It builds an overload of news, rumors, and altered content, reflecting the city’s ongoing gentrification. The material works like an archive mixing real news with fiction, alongside manipulated images made using both AI and more traditional editing.

Across multiple vertical screens, the feed keeps moving and never really settles. At first it feels familiar, but then something starts to slip. Between posts, real estate ads appear in Hebrew, English, and Russian, hinting at who the market is actually addressing and who it leaves out.

By following the pace and logic of Instagram, the work looks at how information, advertising, and outside investment shape the image of the city, and gradually the city itself.

GTA. An experimental audiovisual project part of the ‘404’ album. Sound on. 🔊

Captured from the moments of our performance in Groningen (NL) at @pigeonfest , where we presented an audiovisual performance using Cypriot dialect rap and live visuals using Microsoft paint. This film blends video-footage with screen-recordings of the live visuals, using data-moshing and morphing, in a transition between the digital and the physical world embracing the errors and glitches.

Rather than treating the internet as a backdrop ‘404’ approaches digital space in which identity is continuously assembled, archived and reconstructed, creating a multi-dimensional space where humour and tragedy coexist without resolution.

“In Coming from a background in street art and now working across digital installations and performative interventions, Franc builds an unexpected bridge between urban space and the virtual realm, between direct action in public space and algorithmic intervention online. With Breaking the News, his most recent project, the artist both imitates and subverts the visual codes of mainstream media, transforming them into a satirical and critical tool. What happens when the news doesn’t just report reality but manufactures it? When every headline is both an invitation and a manipulation, controlling not just what we see but how we think? In a world where information is constant, urgent, and designed for engagement, distinguishing fact from fiction becomes a challenge—perhaps even an illusion. “Breaking the News” does not offer clarity. Instead, it dismantles the mechanics of media consumption, immersing viewers in a system that feels both familiar and unsettling. Not as a reflection, but as an intervention.

But what shapes this intervention? In the spaces between headlines and notifications, between urgent alerts and endless scrolling, we find ourselves caught in a dance of revelation and concealment. The morning light filters through my window in Tunisia as notifications stack up on my screen—each one promising importance, each one competing for attention. The algorithm whispers, suggests, redirects. What emerges isn’t truth or falsehood, but something more complex: a choreographed reality where significance is measured in engagement metrics and urgency is a currency all its own...

Digital collage created using images from news reports on corruption in Cyprus, responding to recent watchdog reports that identified the former president as a possible suspect.

"Cyprus' anti-corruption watchdog on Tuesday said it had identified possible abuse of power by former president Nicos Anastasiades while in office, referring the matter to the island's top ‌prosecutor for further consideration.

The alleged violations include irregularities in campaign financing, alleged efforts to influence investigations into businessmen bankrolling political parties and alleged institutional interference in matters affecting his own interests.

They also include the alleged use of political influence before his election ⁠to advance citizenship applications linked to clients of his law firm, including wealthy Russian businessmen.

Anastasiades, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, was president of Cyprus between 2013 and 2023. During that time, thousands of wealthy investors acquired a Cypriot passport in an investment for citizenship scheme. It was discontinued in 2020 after a string of exposes that the scheme was running without proper oversight. " Reuters.
