PERMESSO

A moderare l’incontro @matetemartini e @saratintin.psd.

GRAZIATA - 2024

From the archive

To get rid of the “poison” and regain her “sanity”, she must dance, dance, dance.

But what if the poison was on her side all along?

From the archive: GRAZIATA, a performance ritual created by collective F.E.M. Centonze, Van Houtert and Koniordou - was developed at Seestadt Studios, we- interdisciplinary artists critically explored the theme of Tarantism.

In its premiere, GRAZIATA delves into the emotional states and behaviours that humans are so often expected not to show in public: anger, fear, sensuality and joy.

Through the body, movement and ritual, the collective creates a powerful reflection on highly emotional states and on the ways certain emotions have been perceived, controlled and expressed across different societies.

Francesca Centonze, Els Van Houtert and Markela Koniordou were the winners of the Open Call for Dance and Performance organised by the Donaustadt district.

A powerful, visceral and deeply moving experience.
Forever touched by this work.

Between Air Between Us versammelt sechs künstlerische Positionen, die diesen Entwicklungen mit Humor, Sensibilität und analytisch-poetischen Perspektiven begegnen.

A brief recap of the incredible exhibition by @jakoblenakneb curated by @lucas_cuturi in the enchanting setting of the @marmorschloessl in Bad Ischl.
The exhibition unfolds as a multilayered journey, exploring identity in relation to history, art history, fashion, religion, and mythology. It is a dreamlike, surreal installation, a space in which to lose and rediscover oneself.
In her practice, JKL shows remarkable generosity, inviting artists and students to exhibit alongside her. I am fortunate to be among them, a true privilege and an honor.
Always, a heartfelt thank you Markus Pires Mata @das_em

Soft Target
Sculpture made out of bullets
Exhibited at La boemia sta sul mare, Biennale Internazionale donna, Curated by Riccardo Rizzetto.

“Soft target” creates a complex semantic tension. Migration is no longer only a story of crossing and shipwreck, but a direct consequence of structural violence, geopolitical conflicts, and war economies.

The material itself carries this tension: the bullet (a symbol of aggression and control) is melted, reworked, almost redeemed, yet it never forgets its original function. The dinghy (inflatable boat), made from fused bullets, makes this layering explicit: its two hulls rest on a crushed bullet, as if the weight of the crossing were literally sustained by the violence that produces it.
Before arriving at the final object, the process moved through plaster, tin, 3D prints, melted and deflated forms - not merely experiments, but narrative fragments that mirror the logic of the crossing: attempts, failures, deviations.

BID V \ INVITED ARTIST

FRANCESCA CENTONZE

A Must Sea

In A Must Sea, Francesca Centonze operates along an unstable threshold where visibility and invisibility intersect with the economies of survival. Within the context of Porto Vecchio in Trieste, minimal traces of inhabitation emerge alongside the rhetoric of regeneration, revealing a landscape marked by suspended presences and uneven conditions.

Elements such as the sea, the thermal blanket, the wave, and the dinghy appear as fragments charged with ambiguity; at once material and symbolic, suspended between residue and prefiguration. What seems marginal or peripheral becomes a site of intensity, where broader geopolitical and social dynamics remain inscribed without being fully resolved.

The work does not stabilise the gaze, but keeps it in tension between contemplation and responsibility. It invites a form of attention that lingers on what surfaces without immediate recognition, holding open a space where perception becomes an ethical and situated act.

@francesca_cent

We invite you to experience the exhibition in person. The Biennale remains open to the public until 2 May.

Exhibited at La boemia sta sul mare, @biennale_internazionale_donna , Curated by @riccardorizzetto_studio .
Reprint of Mare Mostrum, an ongoing project initiated in 2015,
reflecting on the enduring human tragedy of migration in the Mediterranean. Two silkscreen prints
are displayed alongside a one-meter pedestal composed of 6,000 stacked prints, emphasizing the
repetition and accumulation of waves, as well as the persistence of memory.
The first print dates back to 2015 and was originally carried during protests against Matteo Salvini,
recalling the era of the “Ruspe”(that is, the bulldozers symbolically used to clear Rom camps during his political campaigns). The project has never lost its urgency: the number of deaths at sea
continues to rise relentlessly.
The display transforms the work into a participatory experience. Visitors are invited to take a print,
choosing whether to engage with the image or leave it behind. This simple gesture extends the
circulation of memory, making the audience part of the work itself. The multiplicity of waves
mirrors both the movement of the sea and the way memory travels, multiplies, and resists erasure.
Through this piece, past and present struggles, political protest, and ethical responsibility converge.
Participation, attention, and care become acts of solidarity—a reminder that witnessing is never
neutral.

When I was invited to BID- La Boemia sta sul mare - Esercitare discontinuità, pensare altrimenti ( Bohemia lies by the sea - Practising discontinuity, imagining otherwise) - currently on view until May in Porto Vecchio in Trieste, the fifth edition of @biennale_internazionale_donna , curated by @riccardorizzetto_studio I realized how urgent it is to question not only what we look at, but how time is lived.
In this sense, the project A MUST SEA can also be understood as situated, as it relates to the Porto Vecchio area of Trieste and to the situation of migratory flows.

A Must Sea explores regimes of visibility and invisibility, starting from a refusal of a detached “it’s not my concern.”
My research began in 2015 focusing on migration across the Mediterranean Sea. In Trieste, a different but related context is present: migration along the Balkan route. These remain distinct situations, shaped by different geographies and conditions, and they are not to be conflated.

The work reflects on how these realities appear—or remain unseen—in public space, particularly in Porto Vecchio, where urban redevelopment and cultural projects coexist with forms of precarity linked to transit and migration.

It is based on traces found in the city—wrappers, remains, small objects—signs of passage and temporary presence that often go unnoticed. The sea printed on fabric becomes an ambivalent image: at once nostalgic and fragile, but also a space of loss and departure. Emergency thermal blankets act as markers of survival and border regimes, evoking both protection and exclusion.

A present shaped by uncertainty, the future feels like a missed promise; the past, laden with nostalgia, becomes a space of projection and refuge.
