Another epic @thetimesluxx issue to kick off September, including my interview with @lauren_scott_harris, co-founder of @earnt_ one of the simplest, cleverest volunteering-meets-social-impact-meets-cool-stuff I've come across. The idea: you pick litter or help paint a school for a few hours and that gets you access to anything from free coffee from @therivercafelondon to access to @harrystyles concerts. Epic.

A weekend in Northumberland: a good pub, a cosy room, bright and breezy with all you need (decent bed, tea, shortbread). Downstairs, a lean-worthy bar after a wind-blasted beach walk with friends you've known for decades, arms slung around shoulders and half-drunk pints. A cracking deli a few doors down selling proper coffee and cheese-and-pickle sandwiches and posh crisps, and the fine sand of Alnmouth still clinging to your boots when you return home.

It's scoliosis awareness day! And here I am up a mountain, not letting my own scoliosis get in the way of having a very good time indeed. Scoliosis isn't something I talk about a huge deal, but it's an important part of my life. Some background: idiopathic scoliosis often runs in families and affects about 3% of the population, usually hitting around puberty, which is about as much fun as it sounds. I was diagnosed at 11 and my spinal curve rapidly progressed from mild to extreme. Three days after my 14th birthday, I went into hospital and had two nine -hour operations, including a spinal fusion, three titanium screws and a Harrington rod (swipe for the before and after). Yes, I am bionic. No, I don't set off metal detectors. I had to re-learn how to walk and then spent six months in a back brace, and while pain management is a very real part of daily life, it has not stopped me from doing a single damn thing. Skiing, scuba diving, paragliding - all totally fine. Oh, except bungee jumping, which I'm not allowed to do for some reason (I'm totally fine with that). So. That's my scoliosis story. Not easy, not particularly fun. but I wouldn't be me without it.

(As an aside, scoliosis affects mostly girls and women which I think is one of the reasons it's so little understood - yes, I AM making this a feminist issue.)
