Very late to the party on this one but SUCH a thrill when I get to write about the homes of friends. And this one is special in every way. A soulful home created by a sooper dooper creative couple whose family has crept into our hearts - big time. Neighbours, friends, fellow creatives - my cup runneth over. Read all about them in the latest issue of @houseandleisure

Honored to have our home ā€œBallotinaā€ in Tulbagh featured in @houseandleisure ā€˜s latest edition ā€œEmbraceā€. Founded in 1699 as the fourth European settlement in the Western Cape, its architecture was grounded in the emerging and unique Cape Dutch tradition. Almost completely destroyed in the 1969 earthquake, the government quickly rallied to restore the towns buildings and its legacy. Now it boasts the largest number of national monuments in the country, most situated on Church Street. It seems fitting then, that Belgium’s @ateliervierkant considered a renewed Ballotina as an inviting, living platform in which to present their sculptural clay vessels, made by hand using historic techniques. This time last week I was at Bliss & Stars in the Cederberg on a four-day Orion’s Odyssey Retreat. In a world where everything tends to be categorised, here the usual tropes of luxury, wellness, retreat, escape and adventure fall far short. For this is a place so simple in its power, it defies description.

First off, it must be said that Bliss & Stars is in a spectacularly remote destination on the Doring River. So much so, the last stretch can only be accessed by 4x4. I was in my husband’s car and so I traversed the pretty rocky terrain and off-piste ascents myself. Exhilarating stuff!

Checking into my gorgeous cabin nestled into the rock face with views over the river reveals a profundity of raw, untamed nature - big skies, powerful mountain landscapes and the sound of the river your soundtrack. Our days were filled with hiking to caves (filled with 10 000-year-old bushman art), river swims and outdoor Qigong punctuated by the most delicious plant-based menu I’ve ever tasted, all prepared by the insanely talented Bliss & Stars Chef Aphelele and his team. I would honestly go back for the food alone.

Stargazing sessions every evening and sometimes in the early morning with co-owner and astrophysicist Heine Rasmussen blew my mind wide open. His passion for and incredible knowledge of the vast worlds that lie above us is humbling. How is it possible to have got this far in life knowing so damn little?

For the first day or so, I was definitely in acquisition mode, accumulating my newfound knowledge and experiences like a feverish zealot. But somewhere in the middle of it all, I simply hit pause. It might have been the grounding ritual of the food or the power of the landscape or the fact that there is no WiFi but I simply stopped. I read and napped (post-breakfast, pre-lunch, post-lunch, pre-dinner) and gave myself over to the kind of mindless rest I haven’t had since I was a child. What Heine and his sociologist wife Daria are doing here is remarkable. Much like their story. Cannot recommend this moreā€¦ā¤ļø

One of our favourite homes in a very special African city, is that of architect Lisa Rorich whose beautifully restored modernist marvel of a house harks back to a time when design was about defining a new way of living - when the lived experience and architectural aesthetics were not mutually exclusive. And when longevity was an ideal worth striving for. A valuable reminder in these times, which is why we are so thrilled that Foster magazine @fostermag.zine has chosen this 60-something year old home for their second issue, bravo! šŸ‘

When you have been capturing interiors for as long as I have for @frankfeatures, it’s a highlight when you come across a space that is unequivocally itself. The home of artist and friend Lucille Lewin is just such a place.

Lucille has been a big inspiration to me for more than 30 years, so what a privilege it was to head over to London late last year and spend time in the incredibly beautiful home she shares with her husband Rick. Lucille’s artistry across all spheres had me bouncing off the walls with inspiration for months after….ā¤ļø

Better yet to see our capture of her home in the inaugural issue of Foster - a new lifestyle magazine launched at @salonedelmobilemilan this week, that aims to foster the art of living better. Whoop, whoop!

This time last year we had just returned from an incredibly inspiring trip to Sweden, where we photographed the spectacular Kaseholm. A place that is so much more than the sum of its parts. A farm stay, an artist-in-residency programme, a multi-disciplinary design studio focussed on food, art and design, and the Northern Exposure Design centre where an extraordinary collection of furniture, homeware and art is sold. And last but not least, the Forum - a teaching and knowledge sharing institution that is based on the reality that our food system is connected to almost everything we do, at all scales and with downstream effects in ways we often don’t anticipate. To this end, Kaseholm collaborates with Michelin Chef Daniel Berlin to create events that tell stories, challenge our taste buds whilst provoking conversations that will lead to change. šŸ‘Š @kaseholm @kaseholm_forum by @frankfeatures

Looking back to when @luannefrankfeatures travelled to Saseka Tented Camp in Thornybush Game Reserve with former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi for @frankfeatures

Her mission? To showcase the trailblazing fashion coming out of Southern Africa with one of our favourite role models. The results - in the latest issue of @moyimagazine - speak for themselves.

I was lucky enough to interview Zozi about the influence she wields as a rebel beauty queen, her work in social justice, gender equity, women’s empowerment and her impressive vocal range.

Zozi made a huge impression on me. As the first black South African woman to win Miss Universe, she did so with a short fade cut. ā€˜When I won Miss SA, I’d had short hair for two years and so it felt ridiculous to change my hair for a competition. I wanted to walk into that space as I was and challenge the perception of what it is to be beautiful.’ That she went on to win Miss Universe with the same hair and attitude is šŸ‘Š

And this, her answer to my own conflict around beauty queen stereotypes: ā€˜Maybe it’s because of how I introduce myself to the world but beauty has always come in second place to what I have to say. I haven’t been in a lot of spaces where people disregard my intellect. In fact, within the pageant space, my most challenging obstacle was whether I belonged, or was I even beautiful? By standing for the opposite of everything that had gone before and placing myself in a space where I clearly did not belong, I was able to affect change.’ āš”ļøšŸ‘‘

I wish I could share the whole interview here for Zozi is a powerhouse but you can read more about @zozitunzi in the latest issue of @moyimagazine
